Announcement of suspension of hotel operation for an uncertain period of time.
Sopron is one of the most preferred cities of Hungary, and is very famous of it's history and it's loyality to our country. We are all very proud working here, as we may provide to our visitors not only a unique city, as a peaceful and natural green environment, and a beautiful & friendly hotel as well. Vienna and Bratislava is almost appr. 60 Km from here, people may visit such ancient Austro-Hungarian city landmarks, as Baden, Mariazell, Eisenstadt, Fertod, or Nagycenk. Our hotel is 30 minutes on foot from the old castle-downtown of the city, and only 7 km far from the Austrian border.

The reception was very helpful and fluent in the language, so I can only praise that.
Room 313 is on 3 floors like the reception, so you didn't have to walk up the stairs.
The room was standard, but the refrigerator had not been replaced, so it almost did not cool at all and was empty. In a 4-star hotel, I would expect a full minibar service.
Although there was water in the room, it was only paid for. I would expect free bottled water everyday.
The bed was adequate, but the headrests were small.
The bathroom was clean when it was opened, but things like cotton wool for the ears were missing, and for a wellness hotel I would expect body lotion, which was not in the bathroom.
There was no cleaning during the 5-day visit!!!
We had a basket brought out once, but that was all.
The bathroom was not cleaned at all and the bed was not even made.
Yes, we had a dog in the room, but we were always outside the hotel with the dog during the day, but upon arrival, the room was not cleaned even once.
I have to appreciate that you can go to the hotel with a dog.
But I would expect at least something for a fee of €20 per night, that something would be prepared for the dog. The bed, water bowl, and some plums were missing.
The restaurant was clean and the food could always be chosen.
It is quite rude that they charge the tip automatically directly in the bill.
Wellness is new but rather poorly maintained. Around the pool, there is a mosaic that is very dirty and not maintained.
What I have to praise is that there is a no-swimwear zone in one part of the sauna.
Although I don't understand how someone can go to the sauna in a swimsuit. This should be prohibited in the entire sauna. The saunas are small, but there are several of them, so everyone can choose.
The overall impression of the visit was good, but I would think about whether I would return again.
The hotel rooms were very nice. However, the first room we were assigned had a problem with the lock and we could not get out of the room. We had to call the front desk who had a hard time understanding what our problem was until they came up and were able to unlock the door from the outside. Then, when staff got locked in our room too they fully understood. We were upgraded to a really large 7th floor room for our troubles.
Rooms are available with half and full board. We chose half-board to allow flexibility for dinner. For a four-star hotel, staff could use a little bit of work especially in the dining area. If you don't take the full board and decide to eat in the restaurant, staff gets very confused when you don't choose the buffet. We were ignored for 20 minutes before we flagged someone day who then got someone to take our order. Food was mediocre for dinner.
A huge breakfast buffet is served. Bus stop is right down the street to take you into the center of Sopron for siteseeing and yourcan buy bus tickets onboard. Leave your car behind.
The sauna and other spa facilities were a great way to unwind which is why we chose this hotel midway through our vacation. Otherwise, look at the other 3 star hotels in the area. This one is way too much money for the services we received..
Food good, rooms very nice! In a good location, nice walks possible nearby! Plenty of parking! A few minutes from Sopron city center! Good connection to public transport!
Let me explain:
Pros:
- location, surroundings
- activity and trip possibilities around Sopron
Negatives:
- MATTRESS: the worst sleeping experience ever!!!! We were in this hotel some years earlier, and they told us, that the mattresses will be changed. Well, the mattresses haven't been changed since then. They are really bad, simply unable to sleep on them. We had planned many things to do in Sopron, and around, so after 1 night we bought a rubber mattress, just to be able to sleep a little bit. It's a shame for a 4* hotel...
- SHEETS: they were dirty!!!!! And smelled like somebody (or more) has alrady slept in it, and after them the sheets were only ironed out, but not washed out. All the pillow sheets smelled like oily hair. Pfujjjjj!!!!! We had to buy new pillow, and new pillow sheets in order to be able to sleep. It is a shame.
- SMELL: the rooms smell like a tired old canteen room, when You enter, and unfortunately You simply can not get rid of the terrible smell. You can smell it in the bathroom, also. Hated it!
- WELLNESS: You can feel like nobody cares for it, the water, that came out from pools was never wiped out, it was really slippery, and extremely dangerous. And You could feel the dirt here, also.
- FOOD: from the cheapest ingredients do not expect fine food, but when something ran out, they did not replaced, which is also not acceptable.
-STAFF: You can recognize the same feeling in Fagus, everywhere, they simply don't care. Feels like there is no owner of this Hotel. We met a rude receptionist, when we asked the code of wifi, she just simply poked her finger to a small board, - without saying a word -, from what we could read the code. Yes, we can read, but I think this is not the way a receptionist could deal with a guest.
- SMOKE: probably it was the 2nd worst part (1st was the mattress) of our stay. They designated the smoking area at the back of the reastaurant, just under the rooms. So You could smell the smoke in the restaurant, and in your room. We travelled to this hotel for its location, for the fresh air, but we rarely could smell some fresh air, because of the constant bad smoke smell. Smoking area should be situated far from the place where the majority of the guests would like to eat and sleep. But....as I have mentioned, they simply don't care....
- BATHROOM: you can find towels inHotel Fagus with the name of another hotel: Hotel Magnus.... Excuse me!? Feels like they bought some old stuff from a bankrupt hotel, and they think oh, these are good for guests of Hotel Fagus... In the bathroom You could found nothing but just liquid soap. No shampoo, no conditioner, no body lotion, nothing, just liquid soap... The bathroom was dirty, also, specially the WC, it even smelled really bad.
Finally this is a hotel, which location, the surroundings are beautiful, even the facilities of the hotel are good, but it leaded in a very negligent, careless way, which comes out from every part of it. This is a shame! It should be closed, or the management should be changed in a very short way!
Addition to the unique atmosphere the WIFI signal is very good and you do not need a password to access the internet. The dining area is cozy and the garden is also nice. (however the food isn't that good unfortunately). The staff is very helpful everywhere, I can't say a bad word about them.
This could be a very good hotel, however there are many things that we would change. We always stay in a normal deluxe room, but we don't like that we have to put the beds next to each other. Even if the beds are next to each other there is a small gap between them and we hate that. Since the matresses aren't fixed the gap becomes bigger and bigger and we have to push the matresses together every day. The hotel should provide rooms equipped with double beds. Most of the rooms should have double beds.
The wellness area is too small. We always try to stay in the hotel when there aren't many guests. In this case the wellness area is calm and quiet and you can relax. Otherwise it is crowded and loud and it is more like a nightmare rather than a place to relax. So our advice is to pick a date between Monday to Friday and you'll be fine. Avoid national holidays and long weekend as well. We can't imagine how crowded the wellness area can be when the hotel is fully booked. (like the last day of the year).
The number of free parking places is limited. Very limited. During peak times you can't find an empty place.... If all the places are occupied you can still park in the garage under the hotel however you have to pay for that. It isn't fair at all. The parking should be free for all the hotel guests.
The fittness room is well equipped with new machines. It has been renovated recently. Addition to this there is a squash court next to the wellness area. We've never used it but it looks good.
Couple times a week there are sauna seances at the wellness area. We tried it two times and it was very good. If you like saunas then we recommend this. It costs 400HUF per person which is acceptable. However from my point of view the infra sauna should be free for the hotel guests. It cost 1600HUF for two person for 30 minutes.
The dining area is nice and cozy and we always like to have dinner and breakfast there. However the food isn't that good. It was much better earlier, like 5 years ago. We aren't picky and we always find food that we like, but the selection is limited. The hotel should provide more different food and traditional hungarian dishes as well. Addition to this sometimes the food was inedible salty or just simply inedible. Overall my food rating is 3 out of 5. It wouldn't be a big effort to improve the quality and the number of selection.
The rooms are dirty, especially the carpet, which are not properly cleaned for ages and it is hardly justifiable by the hotel manager who mentioned in other comment's replies, that the owner was not providing enough fund for the renewal of the hotel. With a professional cleaner company surely the carpets could be cleaner with high pressure steam hoovers or other. Easy solution, but if somebody wouldn't spend a money for it, no surprising the result...
The air-conditioning was so noisy if we switched on for heating that we could not able to sleep. Although, we couldn't anyway, because the bed (or better to say the 2 matrasses) so uncomfortable that we were completely broked down by the morning at wake up. And as a top of it, in the morning of the second day we woke up before 7.00 am, because of the intensive kitchen smell coming for the bathroom's ventilation on the six floor! We knew, the scrumbled eggs with onion are ready for the breakfast, instead of a wake-up call... And if we are at the bathroom, it is worth mentioning that the WC installed on the wall is in lower position as usual (like in the kindergarten), which is perfect for the kids and who is practising skiing.
In the restaurant the breakfast's selection was ok and there is quite wide variety for choose. However, in the dinner only meat lowers can eat main dishes, vegetarians had no any choice for main course, even the salats included meats. Not speaking about anyone who has allergic for any contains. Only students were in the restaurant (which we were not against of it), but shows the hotel management's approach how to save money...
We tried the wellness area as well, nothing special, it has an average services (massage, sauna, etc.).
This hotel is located close to the Austrian border and surely expect guests from Western countries. With this quality of service it is hardly believed that foreigners would come back again to this place.
