Great place in a neighborhood (Bloomingdale) without a hotel. No one was there to answer the doorbell so we called the phone number taped to the door; the voice gave us the numerical code to open the lock. Inside, a reservation sheet was pinned to a board with our name on it and a key to the room, with info and room number. Great accommodations; very homey and clean. But maybe a little too laid back about security and administration. I can see they keep their rates down by not hiring a staffer. Practically everything is self-service as a result. Fine for us since everything was so well ordered. Admire their level of trust in clients and in the neighborhood.
We spent a week in D.C. and hands down the best part of the week was our time at Birdhouse! The innkeepers John and Linda made us feel so at home thanks to their hospitality and good conversation. Breakfast was always wonderful and they have many special touches that really make it a home. Everything from snacks on the counter, the coffee bar, and makeup mirror in the bathroom were all appreciated. The historic home is beautiful and offers easy access to many popular spots around town as well as a corner market. I’ve stayed in five star hotels that didn’t offer the hospitality and comforts at Birdhouse. This is the ONLY place we’ll be staying when we’re in town!
This was a last minute booking because I wanted something off the beaten path but still close enough to the sites. This is right in Howard University's back yard and about 3 miles from the National Mall. The property was very easy to find. It was clean and very comfortable!! The staff was friendly and I loved being able to converse with the guests over a great breakfast!! I will definitely visit again.
Was our first time in DC. The location was superb, local restaurants Nearby and you Can Walk to the mall if you wish Cozy atmosphere and great breakfast. Clean room and the hosts where extremely helpfull Will recomend at Any time
Loved everything about this place. Great breakfast and fun people stepping in for owners. Place is just like home, just allot cleaner. I extended my stay to visit some museums. Great vibe here and super nice neighborhood with lots of history. I'll be back with my entire family.
We stayed in the smallest and cheapest room in the house and we had to share a bathroom- we booked at the last minute, thats all they had available, I was worried with the shared bathroom but never was there a time I couldn't use it. Our room was tiny but very clean and cute. The breakfast was amazing eggs and sausage and fresh fruit and a plethra of other goodies. We walked allot and also took scooters and metro and bikes down to the national mall. The innkeepers were very helpful each morning and quickley answered our constant questions througout the day. We peeked at almost all the rooms as they were being cleaned the 4 days we were there, each room is just a treat. Love this place and how we felt at home and safe each night. Thank you- we will be back
This is a lovely bed and breakfast, I felt very welcomed by the innkeepers during my stay and it definitely has one of the best complimentary breakfasts you'll be able to find around! A short talk to the metro and in a pleasant neighborhood.
We stayed here two nights in Room 1. It was in the basement but had plenty of natural light. We were out and about basically all day anyway so it wouldn't have bothered us anyway had it been darker. The room is under the entrance so if you are sound sensitive (which I am), I was awakened in the morning when the innkeepers arrived as I could hear footsteps. This room has its own detached bathroom which was very adequate and clean. The internet was fine and the innkeepers were friendly and helpful when we asked any questions or had any problems (we left our suitcase behind and they were quite helpful with that and traffic issues). There was plenty of bottled water available and some snacks of fruit, cookies and popcorn. We walked to the mall and museum areas. Note that we are gym rats and in great shape. We logged 22,000 steps both days which equates to 10 miles each day. You can easily take the metro or Uber it. There is a great pub nearby with great fish tacos, burgers and flatbread pizza as well as yummy mojitos and other places as well. The innkeeper offered us a metro card that we could have added money to if we wanted. The only other negative I have is concerning the breakfasts. They were microwaved little quiches and warmed up items. We are accustomed to on the spot, freshly prepared breakfasts when we stay at a B and B. The food was okay but would not be a selling point for us. All in all, we would definitely return and had a very pleasant and enjoyable stay!…
This is a difficult review of a property with a bunch of great ratings and a few "atrocious" ratings. Birdhouse B&B is not "atrocious," but it's also not as comfortable as the dozen or so B&B's we've stayed in over the past 3 years. Caveat: We got the last room available for the period of our visit which, booking through a third party, was not clear that it had no bath. This review addresses that room,# 5, and recognizes that the owners were away on vacation during our stay. Review notes: 1. Bed was comfortable, but way too big for the room, so 7" +/- to the wall on one side. Would be more comfortable with a double, or a twin for a single guest. 2. WiFi worked fine, but most B&B's now have outlets and USB charging ports accessible so you don't have to crawl under a desk. Easily fixed with a plug-in outlet/charging station. 3. Bathroom down the hall was just OK. Plumbing fixture handles needed maintenance, and since you have to carry your gear, almost no counter space was inconvenient. No bath mat or hand towels the first day. Bathrobes were too small for an adult male, so you need to carry clothes to and from the bath. 4. Breakfast the first morning had good variety, mixed fruits, pastries. Eggs, sausage and french toast were lukewarm at 0930. On the morning we left, breakfast appeared fresh and hot. 5. The location is OK, appears to be a gentrifying neighborhood. About 0.4 mile from the Shaw-Howard Metro. We mostly used Uber to get around town. 6. Beds were not made and towels were not changed during the three nights of our stay 7. General state of order was not as good as other B&B's - vacuums left out, supplies not put away. There no perks, no wine tasting or snacks in the evening, no sherry on the mantle, pay for sodas. We were uncomfortable enough to leave a day early and forfeit the night's rate.…
Small B & B just 7 bedrooms. There was 2 bedrooms in the basement with their own bathrooms. We had one of these are for our first 2 nights stay. Our room was a good size with plenty of room to move around, plenty of space for our belongings. It was very clean , fresh towels when needed. For our final nights stay we was asked if we would like to move to the " Honeymoon bedroom " It was on the top floor, the room consisted of a very large double bed, large bathroom which included a nice sized shower, jacuzzi, wc with 2 sinks. This was an excellent property to stay in, The breakfasts had plenty of choice. Michelle and Steve were excellent hosts, nothing was too much trouble for them. Michelle put an "app " on my mobile for us which meant travelling around Washington was cheaper than taking the normal cabs. J E Dannatt Scunthorpe England…
