We had planned to go to another destination this summer, but unfortunately this fell through. And now I couldn’t be more thankful that that happened. D.C. was a place we had both never been, and we figured we’d give it a shot. I found Swann House on Booking.com and was surprised to see that a place so beautiful was still available for such a decent price. We arrived at night and did self check-in, which was a breeze, and found our room easily. It was beautiful of course, but also spacious, the bed was comfortable and the bubble bathtub was amazing. The only downside was that we couldn’t get the shower to work, it only ran out cold water. Otherwise we had a perfect room! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was delicious. Unfortunately, the pool was closed during our stay and it was quite hot out so we would have love to try that out. We can definitely recommend staying here and look forward to going back! Note: the building is of course older and has stairs, so big bags are a little hard to manoeuvre. If you have trouble walking or carrying heavy things, I’d recommend you either travel lightly or arrive during office hours so you can ask the staff for help.

I rented the entire Swann House for the wedding party and close family members for my daughter's wedding and it was a simply great choice! I love old houses with great character and Swann House definitely offers that. Each room is unique and the common areas are comfortable. But what was most outstanding was the staff - Isabelle and Sasha in particular went so far beyond what I would have expected that by the end of out stay I felt like they were part of our family! Those who have commented on the condition of the house must not understand that an old house will never be perfect - it will always have its quirks and imperfections - that is what makes an old house unique and interesting. Our entire party of 22 people simply loved our stay at Swann House!

Can't say enough positive things about Rita and Sasha. They get 5 stars. Very friendly, helpful, patient and know how to be great hosts! The house itself was very disappointing. Can all be summed up with two words: no upkeep. Very dusty/dirty (floors and furniture), huge cobweb at the base of the fireplace, pool area overgrown with brush, landscaping not maintained. Paint chipping/needs repainting in several rooms and on back patio. Just fell short of expectations. Breakfast was good but not great. The breakfast quiche was very good. We have stayed at many Bed and Breakfasts and have thoroughly enjoyed so many--this one not so much.

We stayed in the Parisienne Suite. We were surprised to learn that we were in the basement with an outside entrance to the house. The stairs were very steep. The entry way was dirty with areas of the doorway worn to the bare wood. The carpet was filthy, in need of replacing. The second bedroom had no two pieces of furniture that matched, no pillows for the bed and handles missing from the dresser. The room was in need of a thorough cleaning. The bathroom, while lovely, had a table made of mostly rust and the cabinet had peeling paint. For four days we received one small bar of soap and never told that housekeeping was provided every other day. Breakfast was not bad the two days we ate in. However, our last day we received one course, instead of three and told to share a waffle, as they ran out of batter. There was no offer of fruit or toast to make up at least one of the three servings expected for breakfast each day. We often stay at B&B's for the hospitality. There was no hospitality at Swann House. The manager was very defensive and always found a reason why the guest was wrong, instead of accepting the feedback. We were very disappointed.

First, this review is way late as our stay was the first weekend of April 2021. We stayed in the Parisienne Suite. Despite being Covid, we were quite excited. I have wanted to stay at the Swann House for a long time coming. The room was not at all inviting. As you enter the suite after going down a couple steep stairs (outside of the building) you can't help notice the carpet was filthy, not as in having not been vacuumed, but just ground in dirt. It's in need of replacing. The club chairs were also dirty. The room needs a serious deep cleaning. The door to the suite had a curtain on it that you can see through to the outside which means you can be seen in the room. There is a building right next to it in which if someone really wanted to look down they could see you. Or if someone was in the courtyard area, they too could see you even with the curtain there. We had to hang clothes over the curtain to provide real privacy. The fireplace (a reason for wanting this room) was not working either. It was early April and cold and the room is not really street level but slightly below street level so it's got a bit of dampness to it. And, while it was Covid, and we knew in advance that they were not doing breakfast, we were told that it would be provided in the mini fridge along with some bottled water. That never happened either. Frankly, they could have provided a true breakfast and asked guests to enjoy it in the privacy of their rooms (though I don't think there were many other occupied rooms while we were there) instead of the common area. There wasn't even coffee available, or at least not for free. Wow, just wow. I don't want instant coffee either. Even if I could have made coffee using a real coffee maker, there was no half-and-half anywhere to be found. The shower was the saving grace. But for what it cost per night (not including the 40 per night parking fee) it was beyond disappointing. And you can't use Covid as an excuse.

We had two suites, the Parisienne and the Serengeti Suite. We were charged in full "due to COVID" on the day we booked, which is a little strange to me, as most places waited until we left to charge due to COVID. They charged me for two parking spaces before I even knew what size vehicle I would get when I picked up our rental, instead of waiting to see what we got. The beds were comfortable, they had great robes and the rooms were large. But the upkeep was not the best. There were cobwebs in our sitting area all over the ceiling, the doors and the hairdryer were dirty, and there is a table in the bathroom that was rusted. It just needs some better cleaning or updating. The breakfast was not good at all. We stayed four days and didn't even eat there the last day. The rest of the place was the same. Just needed some better upkeep. Pictures were crooked, things were dusty, stuff was still left out on our third day, from a baby shower that was held there the day we checked in. The person doing the cooking was just not a cook. He over-peppered so much that they were our "scrambled" eggs which I think is a personal preference. And they were very overcooked on one side and undercooked on the other which is strange for scrambled eggs. I am attaching a picture of my eggs that had the least amount of pepper compared to the others. One portion was large and the next person would get a small amount. We had pancakes that were kind of strange and rubbery. Again more cooked on one side and barely on the other. We had something we think was poundcake that seemed as though it may be stale. The food just seemed like an afterthought. When we were checking out, they asked us how our stay was, as most places do and when we let the staff know our thoughts on the food, one of them who I believe was the manager, was quite defensive instead of just hearing the feedback that they asked for.

My daughter and I have a relative in the DuPont circle area and when we visited in 2017 we stayed at the Swann House in one of the private entry apartment-style suites. Returning in Feb 2022 to again see family post-pandemic but also to tour some universities, we were delighted to see the Swann House had survived the pandemic! We were excited this time to stay in the Blue Sky Suite, pictured along with us in the living room. The location is excellent, the staff during both visits have all been wonderful, and the handmade delicious three-course breakfasts have been 5-star! This is an old home whose elegance is not overshadowed by its age. Its history is rich and the furnishings and decor speak to a wonderful era but are still comfortable and welcoming. If you appreciate the beauty of a property like this, the extra time to get the sink water hot, creeks from the staircase, or a slightly drafty window will be easily overlooked as charming. I hope we get to return again when the house is full and there are guests to socialize with more freely. It’s such a wonderful place. I hope those who visit enjoy its charm! Many thanks and appreciation to the Swann House staff!

The Regent room was luxurious and wonderful, with a huge bathroom almost as big as the room. However, we specifically chose this B&B and this room because the website advertised that the room has a "wood-burning fireplace." The fireplaces are not operational.

Response from Swann House, General Manager at Swann House
Responded 25 Feb 2022
Dear Guest, Unfortunately because of the pandemic and lack of budget we have not been able to re-open the fireplaces which also explain the substantial discount we are able to offer on our room rate. Our confirmation email is stipulating that our fireplaces are not open for the season. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you had a nice stay despite the lack of wood-burning fireplace. Kind regards, Isabelle

Beautiful property in a great location. I suggest you use email to communicate during evenings and weekends. They are very responsive. The phone will go to voice mail. I hope in the future they install natural gas for the fireplaces. I will certainly stay again and make sure I have enough time for breakfast.

Thank you dear Guest for your feedback and kind words. The natural gas would be a great option indeed for our fireplaces under the circumstances. We will be happy to host you again in the future. Kind regards.

This is a beautiful house in a residential neighborhood just where Kalorama, DuPont Circle and Adams Morgan come together. Because of COVID restrictions we were not able to enjoy all the promised amenities. No cookies, no sherry. But breakfast was delicious and the coffee provided for the coffee maker in our room (Blue Sky Suite) was a fine way to start our day. The bed was very comfortable, the room and bathroom immaculately clean. There is limited parking that you must book with your room if you want it. The DuPont Circle Metro is a 10 minute walk away. As others have noted, the house is a bit "tired" and would benefit from some repainting and some reupholstery, but not enough so to deter us from coming back the next time we're in DC. We had an excellent visit at Swann House and look forward to more.
