We were 8 ex-pat women staying 3 days and 2 nights. With the abundance of natural plants and scenery, no one missed the TVs. The meals were elegant and delicious and always included dessert. The room with the mosquito nets also included a mini fridge and coffee maker and fans. We didn't notice bugs but did see foxes, white tail deer and turkeys wandering the grounds, spider monkey's came down for fruit on the ground and we heard howler monkeys. Some of us spent time at the pool, which also had a jacuzzi. The horseback riding was done professionally with helmets and we rode through mango groves and along jungle paths. The farm tour included a stop at the coffee roaster, the salsa kitchen, plaintain grove, chicken coop, cattle. On the night safari, we saw noctural birds, possum, lots of deer, but didnt see any big cats. The staff was professional, very helpful and fun and we all felt very pampered. I would go back again!

If you are a nature lover, interested in archaeology, or just looking for a jungle retreat in lush surroundings, Chan Chich is your place. My sister and I booked the villa for a week looking for a Covid-safe birding vacation. We opted for the driving transport to the lodge (fabulous birding with guide Levy on the way) and the fly-out from Gallon Jug (excellent short hop to Belize City in a roomy small Cessna).
We were greeted warmly, toured the grounds, and settled into our comfortable and roomy villa before enjoying the first of our thrice-daily meals included in our discovery package rate. All meals had at least three choices including vegetarian, were prepared to perfection, and cheerfully and professionally served. We were the only guests during much of our stay ( it’s low season for birding and Covid, of course) and we felt spoiled rotten.
We birded at least twice a day on the trails and roads around the estate, finding a total of 140 species! Both Levy and Luis are excellent and patient guides, and birding either on foot or from the wonderful safari trucks was very fruitful.
Anabella and all the lodge staff saw to all our arrangements seamlessly including booking a day trip to Lamani ruins and our airport Covid tests to get us back to the U.S.
Bugs love me and I did get bitten a lot, but it’s rainy season and I knew what to expect.
Levy gave us a wonderful tour of the Mayan ruins on which the lodge is built, and it was fascinating to learn the history. We also toured Gallon Jug farm with him and I am so impressed with their sustainable and socially responsible operations.
From the beautiful flowers, excellent coffee in the rooms and at meals, unlimited filtered water, and local beer included in our rate, we were very pleased with our stay and were sorry to see it come to a close.

Chan Chich is truly a magical place! We were met at the resort by Malcom, Leslie, and Annabel, the managers, and they were beating the drum and welcoming you with cool drinks and towels. My friends (Dixie and Julie) along with myself were shown to our amazing cabanas and then offered a scrumptious lunch. Every day was even better due to the outstanding staff. We did the vehicle tour of Gallon Jug, the coffee farm, Sylvester, Laguna Verde and Laguna Seca with our excellent guide, Vidal. We did two walking archaeology and nature tours with Kristopher and he is very knowledgeable. So much wildlife to see! The restaurant with Eli and the bartenders, Mikey and Emil, catered to our every request. The pool and hot tub is the perfect way to spend the afternoon. At night, there is nothing better than going to sleep with the Howler Monkeys singing to you. Truly a magical place!!

Great service, great guides, great accommodation, good bird watching opportunities, delicious and plentiful food, peaceful and relaxed, scrupulously clean and well maintained. Truly an experience to recommend. Thank you to all the knowledgeable, courteous and conscientious people who made this trip successful. Appreciated the opportunity to go out alone with guides who were brilliant at spotting birds, whilst having time to wander on our own. Appreciated the flexible approach to the schedule whilst everything well organised. Enjoyed seeing (and hearing!) the spider monkeys and howlers . Enjoyed being in this beautiful and important jungle environment. Enjoyed learning about the plants as well as the animals and insects. Appreciated the absolute darkness of the night, no light pollution. Proves ‘eco’ does not have to be uncomfortable. The staff and guides never flagged, even at the end of long days. A sense of privacy whilst knowing people were always there to help. Sitting on the deck of our own beautiful wooden, thatched house one felt at peace. The only birds enticed into the camp were the hummingbirds, though some other colourful and ‘melodious’ birds visited on their own, though you have to get up early to truly benefit from the birding skills of the guides. Little foxes trotted by. Saw lizards, spiders, butterflies and leaf cutter ants in camp. Saw crocodiles. Went round a small peaceful lake in a canoe and saw some water birds. Visited a gloriously peaceful wetland area. Learnt a good deal about Mayan culture, although the ruins on site, like so many around, were not uncovered. Met some serious bird watchers. An early to bed and early to rise kind of place. I was not made to feel like a tourist, but a visitor and a guest.

Don’t go to Belize without experiencing the rainforest! Chan Chich Lodge ( little bird in the Mayan language) is a gem!
It’s a small cluster of buildings which blend into the landscape and allow you to see amazing birds, monkeys , peccaries, deer and if you’re lucky ocelots and jaguars.

Each adorable unit has a large veranda to enjoy the outdoors, comfortable beds, nice bathrooms and a mini fridge. We were fortunate to stay in the villa which is outstanding, with two large bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large sitting area and bar with stools and a screened porch as well as an open porch. There are a variety of units to choose from; some are fully screened with shutters which can be opened or closed instead of solid walls. What a wonderful way to really experience the jungle!

There are walking paths, a lovely screened swimming pool and a restaurant/ bar which offers indoor and outdoor seating. The hummingbird feeders are busy all day long with at least 3 different species. You will also see wild turkeys with incredible plumage casually strolling around the property.

The food and drink is very good as well. We really enjoyed the friendly staff who are happy to share stories of their amazing experiences growing up in Belize as well as their proud Mayan history.

There are a variety of exciting excursions to choose. We chose a farm tour, which includes feeding chickens and ducks, the opportunity to pet a young bull whose favourite treat is molasses an you can also feed and pet the horses. This
tour takes you to the green houses which raise all the vegetables served at the lodge and to the coffee plantation and roasting facilities which produce a really good coffee. We also went horseback riding, canoeing on a lake and on a night drive to enjoy nocturnal birds and animals including the cats.

It really is a special experience to stay at Chan Chich Lodge. I highly recommend it for families of all ages. There were multi generational groups as well as many couples and single family units enjoying the lodge when we visited. It has something to offer for everyone.

Spent 3 nights there and saw the most amazing wildlife. It was like Yellowstone but with no crowds and greater variety of animals and birds. We saw a jaguar walking on a road for quite a while in front of our car and spider monkeys and lots of beautiful birds. The lodge organizes nature walks and tours to Mayan ruins, the guides are very knowledgeable and passionate about their work and I would highly recommend not renting your own car but relying on the guided tours to get the most out of your visit.

Had a great 4 night stay here to celebrate our anniversary. Read so many great reviews that I might have come in expecting too much, but in retrospect Chan Chich mostly delivered on those expectations.

Location: if you're into nature, birding, quiet, it was great. It was SLOW though during low season, so if you love the idea of having a huge lodge just to yourself, this is absolutely your place. It is definitely far away from anything else touristy -- which also means you have no other food options, no other activity options, the lodge is it.

Price: we booked through booking.com which offered a super high discount on the room rates. Overall it was a good value given what you get -- but just be aware that transfers and tours can add up -- choose wisely!

Transfers: highly recommend flying in. The road was very very bumpy and took 3 hours of travel. For two people, the 15 min charter flight would have been less than $100 more. And the truck doesn't have a covered back, so had it been thunderstorming, I worry the luggage would hqve gotten a bit soaked.

Food: overall I would say 3.5/4 stars here. Some dishes were really impressive and gourmet, others were a bit more meh. Of the things we tried, particularly memorable were the tostados, burger, shrimp ceviche, shrimp curry, and zucchini soup. Wish they had something chocolate for dessert at least once!

Service: super friendly staff everywhere -- trying very hard, what ends up being not perfect is not due to lack of effort but more lack of knowledge/training.

Rooms: we started off in the Cottages, but because of how many mosquitos there are, I was really suffering...Mr. Elijio was kind enough to upgrade us to the Villa which had A/C. The A/C is worth the extra $$! Amazing views also, but man it was nice coming back to a room that was dry and cool.

Activities: I wish there were more to choose from. A beer tasting would have been really fun. Something more adventure would also be nice (like maybe even install a Zipline course?). The nature and bird viewing was amazing (we even saw a puma on a night safari!!!) and the lakes were both so picturesque too. I LOVED the pool. It was my favorite place to hang out in the afternoons. If I weren't so sensitive to bug bites, probably would have done more biking/hiking.

Internet: not amazing as Wi-Fi didn't really extend to the rooms, but cell service for me worked generally throughout the property so I was fine.

Last thoughts: probably won't be back because of how hard it is to get to -- but if the roads were to improve, would consider coming back during the cooler/drier/less-mosquito season with the kids as a nature getaway.

The team of the Chan Chich Lodge exceeded all our expectations. We spent 3 nights there, had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge and intensively used the walking and driving program they offer. We would like to explicitly thank Vidal, Chris and Ruben for the great explanation and information while being on tour. We did the farm tour, the night drive, the canoeing tour, the horse back riding as well as the nature walk and the archeological walk. All were great and very interesting.
Another highlight is the food. Thank you very much for all the great dishes we could experience. Very tasty.
The cabin itself is very spacious, clean and simply fantastic.
We all did enjoy every minute of our stay. Thank you very much!

We loved our one week stay at Chan Chich Lodge! From the beginning the staff went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect! The staff was always ready to answer questions on just about anything! The guides very knowledgeable and super friendly. The location is very remote but it was worth being in the middle of the jungle a as we had the opportunity to encounter lots of wildlife. The cabin, although rustic, was clean and comfortable. Bugs and other insects are unavoidable in a place like this, so be prepared to encounter wildlife you may not want to see like snakes, spiders, a scorpions. We hope to return to Chan Chich soon! Thanks Chan Chich for an amazing week!

We had an amazing stay with a once in a lifetime experience seeing a jaguar in the wild on the hunt.
Great food and friendly, well-trained, and knowledgeable staff. Not only were the tour guides knowledgeable about bids, flora and fauna, but so too were the waiters, who were able to assist with bird identification.

We always have them pick us up at the airport as we stay for 20+ days and do a great deal of walking. We do purchase the Discovery Package and therefore go for a drive. Other than the night drive you are the only ones going for the drive with a guide. You may contact them and they will always answer your questions. Due to the remoteness we have never driven there. There have been visitors that rent 4x4s and drive out, however, it can become quite muddy when there is a lot of rain. I would strongly encourage you to have a 4x4, not a car.

I would take the shuttle van so as to see the country side. The driver (who is also a guide for the Lodge) will point out interesting plants, animals and geography. You will miss a lot by flying over it all. The van is quite comfortable.
Answer from David G

Hi there. I thought the same on the Discovery package and didn't do it. Also because we went on a tour of Lamanai one day, so the free tours would be wasted that day. The meals are flat rate and not cheap. $45 per person for dinner and $30 for lunch with free (and great) breakfasts. The guided walks/tours typically are 1.5 to 2 hours, and you don't want to cut those short as they are awesome, so that's what you should plan for on costs for that. This is definitely the place for birds of all kinds. Do the early morning walk around the lodge with the guide for sure. Just walking around yourself during the day you will see alot. We went to the escarpment and saw raptors and very pretty view. It is a 40 minute bumpy ride though. We also went to Laguna Seca which is a nice lake and much closer and saw a good number of great birds as well (must go with a guide to get the most out of it). The night drives also are alot of fun and you can see owls, Northern Potoos which are cool and a few others (small quantity, good quality) as well as interesting animals. If you keep going out to their site under "Birding Experiences", they list the birds that are seen each day if your son wants to look them up and get familiar with them. I think you can pretty much forecast what you're going to do and do the math and that should give you the answer on the Discovery Package. Good luck!

Hi Melinda Thank you for reaching us. Over 9 miles of groomed trails surround the lodge which is possible to explore on our own as they have clear signage and we also provide a map of the trail system. You may like to do a guided tour if you wish to explore archaeological walk, a medicinal walk or a birding tour. Regarding the meals, we do have a wide choice of vegetarian dishes as well. Breakfast is include in the rate while for lunch & dinner, one can choose different course as we have set menus for lunches & dinners with a wide choice.
