We stayed at El Gran Mestizo from Feb 14th - 16th, primarily as a base for our rivertour to the Mayan ruins of Lamanai (booked through the resort). The resort is on the river so the boat picks you up right there. Perfect. The tour itself with Gilberto as captain/guide was very nice, beautiful and interesting. If you're lucky on the way (back) you might encounter some wildlife along the riverbanks, such as crocs, iguanas, monkeys, birds etc. The nature itself is already worth the trip. Lamanai was also very interesting and Gilberto knows everything there is to know and gladly shares it with you. He will also arrange a scrumptious lunch. El Gran Mestizo itself is a non expensive very nice resort, with good rooms, quietly located along the river away from Orange Walk, with a nice pool and relax area. And there is also a very very good restaurant called Maracas with delicious food at very reasonable (compared to other places in Belize cheap) prices. The rates at El Gran Mestizo include breakfast but not at Maracas. For breakfast you have to go to their sister hotel De La Fuente on Mainstreet in Orange Walk, a 5-10 minute drive. If you don't have a vehicle EGM provides a shuttle service. The breakfast is more than fine in a clean dining area but not comparable to Maracas. I would have liked breakfast there but this was fine and the food was good.

Our small cabin faced the garden and then the river. We watch lots of birds on the river banks, saw crocs float by and, one evening, coati came down to feed on the opposite bank. The staff were good and the trip they organised to Lamanai was excellent. The on-site restaurant was also excellent with great staff. The included breakfast is only available 10 minutes drive away in the sister hotel. Here, it is pretty uninspiring and served in a restaurant-cum-passageway in the hotel. It was not worth the drive, we didn't bother with it after our first morning.

Suprised to find such a well organized hotel in such a small City as Orange Walk Town. The Staff was so helpfull to arrange a Trip to Lamanai on very short notice. Some of the little huts were equiped with a fully furnished kitchen. The river nearby was very romantic. Unfortunatelly the restaurana was closed on the first evening, but we had dinner there on the 2nd evening. The Steak was fantastic!!!

This is our first visit was very excited especially after the disappointing lunch meal at the nearby Maracas Restaurant. Unfortunately the the pool had algae all on the sides of the pool- risk of ear, skin and eye infection! So that was definitely a No no for us! Better maintenance definitely required for the pool. Please make this a priority. The rooms were very clean and some nice decorations greeted us on the beds. It came with a bag of plaintain chips and water with coffee maker and it’s ingredients. Also Nice! We really appreciate the gestures! Thanks guys! We opted to pay the extra for the small refrigerator amenity, which was also fine. However, the beds need new mattresses as we felt the spring through all night, unfortunately my sleep was terrible. Also a small chair somewhere could be helpful.

A very nice hotel right on the river and a good place to stay if you are planning on visiting the Lamanai Mayan ruins. The rooms/beds we clean and comfortable. The pool and grounds were well kept and an excellent place to relax after a busy day. Wifi worked well enough. We also ate dinner at their restaurant and it was good.
The only criticism is that while breakfast is included, you must drive to another hotel a few miles away in town to get it; the hotel does provided a free shuttle for those without a car. The breakfast was just OK.

We had one of our best meals at this quaint riverside bar and grill. The staff was friendly , the drinks were strong, the crudito was extra spicy and the food was local, fresh and tasty. Highlights include the salbutes, the tostadas, the fries and the Baileys cheesecake

Our stay at the El Gran Mestizo was fantastic. My family loved the pool. The staff continually went above and beyond with all of our requests and needs. It was a great place to relax and so quiet and peaceful. The riverside cabins and restaurant were both outstanding. The food portions were generous and the quality was so good. The cabin was spacious and gave us ample room to spread out and have our own areas. We loved being next to the river and its beautiful scenery.

We stayed in orange walk to do the trip to Lamanai, but the hotel itself was also an amazing experience. Having stayed at Sleeping Giant Lodge to see wildlife, we actually ended up seeing more wildlife and birds at El Gran Mestizo. I spent hours just sitting in the gardens, watching the river, and seeing all the kingfishers, herons, and fish come and go - amazing! The staff were so lovely and made sure our stay was perfect. The rooms are a little compact, but they are great for the price and service :) we had breakfast every day at the partner hotel in town (free shuttle provided), which was lovely. Overall we had an amazing stay, and we can’t wait to come back!! - Alice, London, UK

My big family and I booked a couple nights while we visited relatives in town. All we needed and expected were clean beds and a place to shower and rest at night. With this in mind, we booked their "dorm" and were pleasantly surprised. It's the best dorm we have stayed at, with AC, extra clean and extra nice beds, on-site restaurant, pool access. A big thank you to Adrian, their manager who was a great help: for making us feel at home. When we arrived, he quickly turned on our AC and gave us a small tour of the property, even offering s kayaks and bikes to explore and overall just making us feel welcome. We came back to our cool room to some local snacks! And when we saw the room, well it can't be called a dorm. We slept great and enjoyed early morning walks by the river before setting off to our daily visits. Just an unexpected and pleasant surprise. We will surely visit again soon! Jose Alberto

Stayed 4 nights in their newest cabin; very comfortable accommodations. Ate at the restaurant on site for 2 dinners and 2 lunches. Food and service were excellent! Very convenient for the river tour and a short, inexpensive taxi ride to downtown (or a comfortable 20-minute walk) to restaurants and grocery store. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
