We were visiting our son who was living in Xela for a year. The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of Xela, easy walking to many of the town center attractions, eateries and sites. The staff were very professional and friendly. We had a family suite. The management pro-actively offered to move us one evening when a wedding was going to take place very close to our room. This was very thoughtful and much appreciated. The rooms are spacious, clean and fresh. The beds are firm, which I love. Showers were hot and powerful. The included breakfast was fresh and tasty. We did not see any elevators and did not need them but check if you have accessibility issues. We used Booking.com and felt the rates were fair. We have no hesitation recommending Pension Bonifaz Hotel.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Aside from a rather firm bed, everything else was great. The service was excellent and the restaurant was really good. Everything was clean too. The location was perfect as it is right by the central park and cathedral. Plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.
There are lots of steps, so be ready to walk! This seems like a historic hotel & it's very unique. I really enjoyed staying at a place like this with some character rather than some chain/typical place. The entry/courtyard where the restaurant is located is quite beautiful. The rooms were pretty simple, but very adequate, clean, etc. The shower wasn't the best, but it was fine, just kindof old. Especially for the price, this place is amazing. Definitely the place you want to stay in Xela! I heard that some dignitaries prefer to stay here than the more luxury place in town.
First the good. It is right off the square in Xela. So there are places to eat and shop nearby. The hotel is clean and the staff are very nice. But it was the worst nights of sleep for us on our 2 week trip in Guatemala. The beds were very hard. And small so with me and my wife in the same bed we couldn’t move around too much. Also outside our window they had some lights they left on till about midnight each evening. Luckily I packed an eye mask. But the most disappointing thing was getting food poisoning from the room service dinner. We are 90% sure this was the source of the digestive distress both me and my wife had. We both chose chicken dishes. I believe they chicken was not prepared fresh when we ordered. Anyways it has been 3 days since that meal and we are still not feeling 100%. So stay there if you don’t might a firm bed. …
Small-ish bar but reasonable service. In the restaurant we had good, simple food. Staff were friendly and efficient. The main areas were pleasant enough, definitely showing their colonial heritage. The bedrooms, however, were very disappointing: dull, plain, with old furniture which did not seem to have any colonial charm. The remote for the tv was attached by nylon chain to the bedside table. The bathroom was similarly dull (so much so I forewent a shower and simply used the washbasin, situated in a separate area leading into the bedroom). What a good job it is that one does not spend most of one’s time in the bedroom.
The location of Pension Bonifaz could not be better, right next to the central plaza. The facade is lovely and beautifully restored. The inside of the hotel musts have been gutted (except of the ground floor) and rebuild. It is actually a very large hotel. As usual, weekends get very busy with most likely wedding parties being held in the pool area. As the rooms are not noise insulated it can get quite noisy. Ask for a room far away from the pool area and from the locked doors which are located on each corridor. During the weekends you will get a nice breakfast buffet. During the week it all changes and they ask you to pay extra for the granola on your fruit with yogurt. Also, on Mondays, the only fruit available were bananas. The internet seem slower on Mondays too, the water in the showers is less warm and our toiletries were not replaced We were rudely awaken on Monday morning when the washing machines of the hotels started their spinning cycle at around 6.30am. Bring warm clothing as it gets cold at night and in the mornings and the hotel is not heated. It all sounds a bit negative, but ultimately I think this hotel is probably your best choice in town. Free parking …
The hotel is very well kept, impeccably clean, big, spacious. The architecture and floors are very well preserved. The rooms are big and comfortable. The staff is welcoming, warm and helpful. Included breakfast was very good and had a lot of options. It is perfectly located in the main plaza. Spending one night there made a huge difference in our visit to Xela. I highly recommend this hotel!
I’ve stayed at Pension Bonifaz many times for business trips since Quetzaltenango is a jumping point for visita to Guatemala’s Western Highlands region. The hotel’s best asset is its location right in the center of Quetzaltenango and close to a diverse range of restaurants and bars. The inside of the hotel is pretty. The rooms are average-looking, although spacious, clean, and tidy. Beds are comfortable and clean. Hot water heater is shut in the evening, so be careful if you want to take a hot shower at night because you may not find any. The problem is that the hotel doesn’t tell you when you check in. It happened to me and the hotel staff were not helpful. They told me that my only option was to wait until the morning. Not a pleasant experience when you’re naked and cold. WiFi is spotty throughout the hotel so if you need it, ask for a room close to the lobby where the signal is stronger. Breakfast is good and includes several options—from typical Guatemalan to continental American. If you have valuables, be sure to lock them up in the safe provided in the room or in your suitcase. That’s just wise travel advice. I know someone who had his laptop and cell phone stolen from his room after leaving them out in the open and someone getting into his room from an inside open window. To be fair, I don’t think this has happened very often at the hotel. But it’s good to be careful. …
Great Guatemalan Cousine ! place in the middle of down town easy access to any other places, clean rooms and bathrooms, every thing in the property is original old fashion, decorations floors and ceilings
In the past We stay at Pensión Bonifaz but this time we just went for lunch and it was good as usual. By coincidence I saw a bunch of old friends including Mario Bonifaz. I highly recommend this place, part of our history.
