The short: for a restful night, re-read the review title. For details, read on. Selected by our Bhutan travel guide, the Hotel Galingkha is located in a part of town with a nice local vibe. The staff was wonderful, gracious and helpful with them wrestling your luggage away from you if you attempt to carry it up the stairs in...

This central hotel has nice rooms, with good showers and shampoo and soap. Nice pillows too. If you ask for asian food, like aloo paratha for breakfast it will come. Dog howling at night is a problem in all hotels in Thimphu, and this one is just the same. If in Thimphu expect to hear the dogs serenading.

This hotel is right in the centre of down town Thimphu, close to the market and shops. Our room on the 2nd floor had a view of the police box "traffic light". The room was spacious and comfortable, the breakfast and evening meals were good, equal to most similar accomodation in Bhutan, staff were excellent and service was prompt. The...

The hotel offers spacious and tastefully done rooms and very comfortable bathrooms. Our room offered good view of two lively streets. However, stray dogs ensured that sleep would be fitful. In fact on the second night of our stay, the dogs seemed to be having some raucous assembly of their own, ensuring that sleep could not be had at all....

If you visit Bhutan as a tourist your hotels are selected for you by your tour group as part of your daily payment. As such, you don't have a great deal of control over where you end up staying unless you ask for a place before you set off. We didn't know we could request specific hotels and, as such,...

Its a average hotel but in the heart of the city. You can take a stroll in the evening down the lane. Bu the services are average. the breakfast was ala carte and average. Beware of the rooms facing the street, the dog howls dont let you sleep:)

Galinkha is a smallish, family-owned hotel in central Thimphu, right across from the family traffic kiosk. It can be noisy at night when the street dogs have dog discussions, but that it just part of being in a city...beats the sirens and traffic horns of urban US. The hospitality and beautiful decor more than make up for that. The staff...

From the street Galingkha looks like a pleasant Mediterranean-style boutique hotel. Its curved exterior overlooks an important intersection, just one block from Thimpu's iconic human traffic controls. There is a lush garden outside, where you can enjoy a drink, a snack, or a meal. Step inside, though, and you are immediately struck with gloom. The few lights left on are...

A very nice hotel that offers a good view of the main road- the one with no traffic lights and no traffic jams. For some rooms, you can watch the traffic police as they control traffic on the main road. Very close to the Post Office and bank and close to local restaurants and shops. They have no lifts so...

Room is decent and clean, food was alright but it takes some time to get prepared. Hotel staffs were friendly and hotel is located right in the middle of the town. We navigated our way along the streets to get some souvenirs and found our way back easily. Cons: - No lifts in the building, rmber to request for lower...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Welcome to the restored and redefined Hotel Galingkha. Situated literally in the heart and junction of what is the burgeoning capital of Bhutan in Thimphu, the hotel is one of the oldest in the kingdom. When the capital was first planned and developed, the area in which Hotel Galingkha is located was literally Ground Zero. This area is as much the beginning of what is today a rapidly growing capital of 90,000 inhabitants as it was when the area was nothing but rural houses and rice fields. Change is imminent and the agrarian life and its accompanying tools and symbols have led way to a vibrant and commercial hub that breathes life into the rest of Bhutan. Today Thimphu is not just the face of a changing Bhutan but also the face of a kingdom that wants to transform in its own image. And this is where Hotel Galingkha takes pride in being one of the faces of a changing Bhutan. The hotel has been restored maintaining a delicate and fine balance between the traditional Bhutanese architecture and practical modern amenities to keep provide our clients with the comforts of a home, the caring services and atmosphere of a family and a vantage location to explore the main streets, bars, restaurants, handicrafts and the colorful nooks and corners of Thimphu. ... more   less
