For the last four years I've been coming to Nepal during the summer, and I always stay at the Nippon GH when in Kathmandu. In addition to the bigger rooms, they also have smaller rooms for the budget traveler that are spartan but clean, with private bath. Prices are always going up, but you should definitely check this place out.

Most of western-standard hotels in Kathmandu are located in Thamel, the more modern part of the city centre. For someone who wants to enjoy Kathmandu from the oldest part of the city, near Durbar square and the historical Freak Street (the past hippie hub), it's hard to find a decent place as there's no mid-range hotels, just old lodges with...
