Spent a couple of nights at the Royal. A modest hotel with very helpful staff. Location is ideal with easy access to the Grand Palace, Khao San Rd., Chinatown, river boats piers, etc. via short tuk tuk/taxi ride or by foot. Recommend for a few nights, at least, if visting BKK. Rooms are clean and reasonably priced. Area is very...

I spent two nights at the Royal Hotel during my visit to Bangkok in December 2005. It was my first visit to Bangkok and I picked this hotel after reading some reviews which described the Royal Hotel as a place providing basic but comfortable accomodation in a perfect location to explore the city. My experience confirms in full all such...

We stayed in this hotel for four days last december, overall, it wasn't a bad experience but not a great one either. On the plus side, the location is probably it's greatest asset, very close to the royal palace, Wat Po, Banglamphu and the Kao San Road, not far from the royal mount and Phra Athit pier for river transport....

I can imagine this hotel once used to be grand and royale. But right now, it badly needed a good renovation to give it a breath of fresh air. Don't expect too much out of their services and facilities. The only advantage this hotel has is its location. Khao San, Grand Palace, Wat Pho, the riverside market and jetty is...

We thought this was a good deal for the price. I could understand people's unhappiness if you got a crappy room but maybe we just got lucky the two times we have stayed here. The 2nd time we got a big room, room 135, the first time we were on the 3rd floor and it was a normal size room....

Al lot of reviews I read before going on my trip to Thailand and before I ever set foot in Hotel Royal, were about the faded glory of the royal hotel and about staff who were rude and unwelcoming to the guests. I went anyway and found it to be the perfect hotel for sightseeing and to get a tast...

After reading several reviews which described the Royal as basic but clean and old but charming, I decided for the inexpensive price and favorable location that it would be a good value. Unfortunately, my experience with this hotel was far from royal. The front desk staff was unusually cold, the room was small, dark and dingy and the breakfast was...

For a hotel in it's price range (we paid $21usd/night in 2002), it's hard to beat the location and comfort of the Royal Hotel. Don't get me wrong, upscale travelers will find better bang for the buck elsewhere, but if you are a budget traveler, or a backpacker, who doesn't want to be part of the "scene" on Khao San...

Stayed here with husband and 2 children. They provided us with adjacent rooms, with comfortable beds, good air conditioning, balconies overlooking the amazing traffic systems, spotlessly clean bathrooms, and televisions in each room. Breakfast buffet covered every taste. Bed and breakfast for the 4 of us for 3 nights cost just £80 (UK pounds). Couldn't hope for better value, especially...

The streets of Bangkok are more like a parking lot. Why would you want to spend all your vacation in a taxi? The week I stayed at the Royal hotel, I either walked or took the river or canal boats. The Royal is across the street from the Royal Palace and the main boat pier Ta Chang. The breakfast buffet...

Staying in Banglamphu

Neighbourhood Profile
Banglamphu
While you’ll see skyscrapers in most parts of Bangkok, it’s the gilded roofs of ancient pagodas that adorn the skyline of Banglamphu, the city’s historical and most touristic district. Hordes of tourists flock to this area to tick quite a few must-see attractions off their to-do list, with the Grand Palace being the most spectacular of them all. Banglamphu is also home to Bangkok’s infamous tourist ghetto, centered around Khao San Road. Visit at night to feast on road-side pad thai, cheap beers and if you’re up for it, some dancing fueled by buckets of Thai whiskey.
