We stayed at Grand Madrid for six nights in early September and the service we received was far below our expectations. We will NEVER visit this hotel again. If you are planning to visit this hotel make sure you check everything possible in the room and report any minor problems to the management. Our room door handle was slightly loose...

We stayed at the Grand Madrid as part of a group tour of Istanbul and Gallipoli. When we arrived none of the staff spoke any English and getsured for us to sit on the couches. At various times in the next hour we got up and asked what was happening but we were simply waved away. It wasn't until there...

Although the Hotel was undergoing renovations when I arrived for my reservation, I was very impressed by the way that the staff and manager made special efforts on my behalf to accommodate my stay. My room was very well appointed with fantastic views of the Bosporus and Sultan Ahmet. The breakfast was delicious and the restaurant also had breathtaking views....

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.

“Rooms with view may have seperate beds.”

“In some rooms there's a problem with the WC toilet - they won't flush due to poor water pressure, so make sure this works in your bathroom, or keep phoning the reception (as we did) asking them to send someone to fix the problem. They're used to having this kind of problem and they respond quickly, so no need for you to feel embarrassed or annoyed.”
