Apple Strudel and coffee/iced tea in an Oasis of calm in middle of Arab quarter of Old city was reason it was recommended. Almost colonial feel and tables set outside in gardens were in sun and shade as needed. We also took a walk to 4th floor viewing platform for rooftop views over Old city.

The hospice is actually a very nice but simple hotel, with an excellent all day Austrian cafe / restaurant. Rooms are large and airy, full of historic charm. The bathrooms are basic but very clean and functional. The breakfast is simple but does the job. The hospice is located in the Old City, on Via Dolorosa in the Arab Quarter. The neighborhood feels very friendly and safe, and is remarkably quiet at night. Remember that this is a Christian guest house, and not actually a commercial hotel, and be respectful of the place, the staff as well as the other lodgers. Many of the staff members are actually young Austrian volunteers. Think American Colony Hotel - in a better location and a fraction of the price. This place a gem!

I stayed here for one night in March 2023. I was checked into the new building which isn’t part of the actual hospice but was built in 2019. The room was spacious with good WiFi, a desk, two twin beds, a bathroom, toiletries and a hair dryer. There is no kettle or tv though. There is a lovely terrace with multiple floors you can sit on which is private the to the new building residents. Lots of benches to sit on and it overlooks the Via Delarosa. The beds are comfy and there are ample plug sockets for charging. You can open the shutters of your window to have a view of the hospice. Breakfast was fab, there was a hot drinks machine, lemon, orange juice and water. There is fresh fruit, boiled eggs, meats, salad, cereals, toast, cake, yogurt and chocolate and vanilla puddings. The dining area is lovely and the staff are warm. The main hospice is open to the public, it is like a museum inside with a beautiful chapel and library. As a resident you can go onto the roof included in the price, but as a visitor it is 5NIS to visit which is well worth the money if you don’t stay here. There are commanding views of Jerusalem which is especially amazing at sunset. A lovely hotel, great for a relaxing stay, but if you want to stay in the actual hospice don’t book a terrace room as this is a new building next door.…

Perhaps overcome by the overpowering sense of history, I score this place more highly than I would if it was in say…Stockport (no offence to Stockport, been there, liked it). A place of rest for religious pilgrims in the 19th century becomes a place of pilgrimage for sznitzel and strudel lovers in the oh so quaint cafe; and pilgrims of wonderful views on the rooftop observation deck. It turns out if you don’t fancy spending your youth in Austrian mud as part of your military service, you can serve mint tea to tourists (pilgrims) in the restaurant. Whilst in inside is a little austere and old fashioned (as it should be being a historical building), the little garden on the way in is a wonderful Eden.

Basic, but spacious, spotless room with en-suite bathroom, high ceiling and a faultless location. It was a perfect location and a perfect stay. Buffet breakfast is offered and the cafe on site is also very pleasant and the food served at the cafe was basic but delicious. We unfortunately got the 3 days of rain so we missed out on the rooftop and open air seating, but we’ve no doubt that they were beautiful too on dry sunny days. It was a flawless experience and we highly, highly recommend.

The Wiener Kaffeehaus is a nice place to rest with a nice slice of Sachertorte after a long walk in the Old City but don't wait for a nice welcome, a smile or good service... All that is always below average and that's a shame !!!

This historic, well renovated and maintained building may be the optimum place to stay when looking for an atmospheric accommodation in the very hart of ancient Jerusalem. There is a magnificent view from the roof terrace (no service, but a Viennese coffee shop with a lovely garden is at the ground floor). There is the old building with big and high rooms, furnished partially with antiques and the new part in modern style. Although there are also dormitories for pilgrim groups, the character of the house is more towards a hotel, I would rate 3 star, but for the location and the garden one could grant one star more. Also the friendliness is outstanding. The disadvantage is that there is no taxi access to the old town from 10am to 7pm, meaning 5-10 min walk from the Damaskus gate.

The old city of Jerusalem is a warren and often very crowded. This place, reached from a stone entrance offers an elegant old world hostel with a really nice Austrian style cafe which has shaded exterior seating area. Inside worth visiting the old library or going up onto the roof for great views of the old town though you will need a few coins to get through the entrance gate.

The food is excellent. The hospice has friendly staff. The views from the terrace are truly spectacular. The Fried Fish with tartar sauce, the apple Strudel and the hot chocolate were delicious. Big portions and served in minutes. Oasis in the heart of the old city ! If you’re visiting Jerusalem for a couple of days and want to concentrate on the old city then staying here makes sense. Bookings are advised many months earlier though.

Step out of the old city's muslim quarter and into another world. We just visited the cafe for a peaceful moment of coffee/tea and strudel. The cafe has a garden area with tables. It feels miles away from the old city that is just outside the door. Take some time to relax and recharge while in Jerusalem
