The Inya Lake Hotel, surrounded by 37 acres of verdant gardens, a serene lake resplendent with lotus, leafy trees and a free-shaped swimming pool offers the perfect retreat for guests to simply sit back and relax. Exploration of Yangon and the surrounding area is also a must and we would be delighted to arrange a variety of tours and excursions for you during your stay with a private guide.A 15-minute drive from the city centre, and 20 minutes from Yangon International Airport, the colonial styled hotel with its teakwood floors and oriental feel evokes charming memories of a by-gone era. The 185 guestrooms are decorated in retro style offering guests astonishing views over the city of Yangon and the Inya Lake.Experience the exotic delicacies of Myanmar, this secret tropical cuisine so redolent of the spices, textures and flavours of both this country and its neighbours. Unwind and enjoy the magic of sunset at the Lake View Bar or just relax at the Pool Bar. History Located on a 37-acre, verdant parcel, the Inya Lake hotel possesses a unique history. In an era of heightened tension between the Soviet Union and the United States, it became part of the Soviet's foreign policy to befriend third world countries like Myanmar [then known as Burma], especially as Myanmar in the late 1950ies governed by U Nu, was still a socialist country. In his 1958 state visit to Myanmar, Secretary General Nikita Khruschev presented the Government of Myanmar with three gifts; one of which was the Inya Lake hotel. It is claimed that Khruschev had a personal hand in the design of the free-form swimming pool that is one of the high-lights of the hotel The Inya Lake Hotel was a grand, impressive gesture to demonstrate the skills and technology of Russian engineers, architects and technicians who came and built what was described by the international media as the most modern hotel in Southeast Asia of that period. Construction was started in 1958 and the building was completed and opened for the first guests in October of 1962. Although the hotel was refurbished with modern facilities, the original building has remained much the same as it appeared when it was built with characteristic high ceilings in the spacious lobby, in the rooms, the "Mingalar Hall ' ball room as well as the Café

This hotel reminds me of Raffles 40 years ago, Hotel Nacional de Cuba 20 years ago, and The Ahwhanee in Yosemite 10 years ago. In other words an hotel built on the grand scale with status and comfort in mind.
The bedrooms are very large, the public spaces grand and spacious. They have balconies and many with lake views. The siting is glorious. One part of me wishes for a billion dollar makeover to make this into one of the greatest world hotels; and this will surely happen as Myanmar develops. But this will happen with great regret as the hotel as it stands is perfectly comfortable with good air con and comfortable beds. Among many I am happy to compromise the 1950's bathroom (which functions fine) with bargain room rates for advance bookings.
The management of this hotel keep continued maintenance levels high, offer top class reception services, and provide a good buffet breakfast. And high occupancy rates through the hosting of conferences, seminars, and wedding services keep the hotel full, busy and pleasantly bustling.
Unless you wish to stay Downtown then this is unquestionably the place to stay in Yangon. A silent oasis with a lake view. A 2$ taxi fare will take you into town. Lovely clean swimming pool.
We didn't try the hotel restaurant because there is the very excellent Seeds and very good L'Opera restaurants within walking distance.
A destination hotel and memorable.
Note: we had a very early departure and we were offered a take out breakfast box without prompting when we arranged our early taxi the night before we left. Nothing grand, but most welcome.
Only the dated feel to the bathrooms robs this hotel of the top rating star.

Apparently, the hotel was a "gift" from Kruschev when he visited Yangon in 1958. I guess he wasn't impressed with where he stayed at the time. The hotel opened for business in 1962. How splendid it must have been then.

It's still quite splendid albeit all the hectares of woodwork could do with refinishing and some more attention paid to potentially lovely places like the bar, restaurant and the pool area (gossip has it that Kruschev himself doodled its freeform shape, unusual for its day).

As is much of the design of the whole place. A friend described it as "Stalinesque", which I think unfair; in many ways it's more hip 60s design than other buildings of the time in Southeast Asia. Structurally, it seems to resemble a cruise liner, perched on a drydock waiting to be launched into Inya Lake. The inner staircase is a light and elegant thing with steps spaced for big feet and long legs, a rarity in this part of the world.

There are quaint and pleasing signs of the times: opposing wings are marked "Sunrise" and "Sunset". And the Myanmar artworks generously dotted throughout are marvelous.

The fitness centre has the latest equipment, most of which were new to me.

The food is good enough albeit why eat there when L'Opera is in the grounds.

The grounds, beside the lake, which seems healthy unlike the usual polluted cesspools commonly found in cities, are pleasant although it would be nice to be able to circumnavigate it on foot. Unfortunately, its shores are owned by wealthy people. Only the far end is a public park.

Along the hall way, the plates, cups, ect were located at the entry of the every single room as we noticed that the room occupied with the COVID-10 self-isolated persons. Suggest to keep away covered by invisible cover or something like that (Especially after meals plate). Understand that is happened in this period / current situation.

The pool and outdoor facilities here are truly lovely. We had some great lunches and the pizza (room-service) was so good we ordered it twice! Staff were very helpful and friendly. It would have been nice to have been informed that the hotel was extremely busy due to being a quarantine hotel or to have been placed on a different floor. The balconies could do with a bit more attention to detail/plants/furnishings as it is always nice to have a chance to sit outdoors in a lovely location such as this! The cooked part of the breakfast was disappointing (fried rice, sausage etc)! However the rest of the breakfast (bread, fruit etc) was very good.

3 Nights in Inya Lake hotel.

As I waited for my flight exiting Myanmar, I checked in Inya Lake hotel for 3 nights. Upon arrival we were welcomed with humbling hospitality. Our luggage were immediately taken care of and we were seated in the lobby and were served with water. We were then escorted to our room with very friendly staff, who were following all the crucial SOPs for COVID 19. As we entered our room we were instantly delighted as it over looked the most scenic lake and a lush beautiful garden before that. Palm trees are everywhere and some trees are even older then the hotel. Comfortable and cozy bed with fresh white linen. Nice big flat screen TV and amazing day light in the room. Toilet and bath is very clean and spacious. Balcony with very comfortable furniture and spacious as well, looks over one of the best sunset scene Yangon can offer. Amazing swimming pool which is situated right next to the lake connected with a kid pool and play area. With all these amazing facilities, the hotel has an amazing team cooking up really delicious food. We had full western / Asian breakfast buffet with live egg station. Service was very hospitable and welcoming. Room service set lunches and dinners were different each day which boasted humble and delicious culinary treats. Their Burger and Chicken & mushroom crepes were absolutely on point.

An overall serene experience which warms you with Burmese hospitality with western comforts. I will definitely be back and will always recommend Inya lake hotel as one of the very first and best hospitality in Yangon.

The Inya Lake hotel beats all other hotels in the city thanks to its location on the lake. We stayed there for a month in one of their lovely suites with a kitchen. The restaurant serves some great fare including the very famous amongst local expats - brunch and pool on the weekends. The walk along the meandering path next to the lake in the evening as the sun sets is beautiful and relaxing. Staff are generous and helpful while the rooms are clean and well furnished. While the hotel itself is not new and shiny like the many others that have come up recently, it more than makes up for that in character, location and warmth. There is a car rental service and a medical clinic in the same property so you are well equipped.

Considering the wide space of the room, a balcony terrace facing a Park and Lake, surrounding nature, quiet environment, this is a reasonable priced for a perfect long stay. A 7 Days quarantine could not be better. The daily set menu gives you choice of Western, Asian and Vegetarian food. Staff very friendly and helpful. Inya Lake makes you feel at home in Yangon.

We stayed here during quarantine when entering Myanmar during Covid, and were pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, the food (SO good and I am vegetarian) and the great value for money. Amazing family suites as well. Will definitely be back here

Our stay during Covid was exceptional. The staff worked hard to maintain a clean and safe environment for guests. The exercise facility and pool were well maintained. The breakfast was wonderful and guests had the option to eat in the dining room or have food brought to their rooms. Every staff member we encountered from the moment we arrived was very attentive.

Are there spiders at the lake?
Answer from Tomskatesnyc
New York City, New York117 contributions68 helpful votes
i had no experience with spiders in the hotel. clean facilities, contrary to previous reporter the buffet breakfast was generous, thoroughly diverse (west and east) and high quality. I recommend the location - $5usd to downtown and $2usd to Sedona hotel commons (Harry's and Fuse etc). The lake is beautiful too US Embassy sits olong its banks too so there's something of an additional support (and the Lady's house too).

I stayed in the Inya Lake Hotel twice in 2012 and again in October 2014. From 2012 to 2014 some improvements have been made to the rooms. Flat screen TV (although I didn't power on it). The breakfast is good as always and if you get a room with a view to the Inya Lake, you have a beautiful sunset. The hotel is very calm and now is easier to get a taxi than back in 2012.
