The location can’t be more convenient as it centrally located near Dongdaemun. It was just a 10 min walk to famous Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Dongdaemun Market. It was also just 3 bus stops away from Myeongdong.
We have enjoyable & relaxing stay in this hotel.
rooms are very well equipped with amenities. hi speed wifi, lcd tv, airconditioning ( both hot and cold), complementary mineral water, safe box, working table, table lamp, shower, etc.
room power plugs are universal so you do not need to bring travel adapter. and there is usb power plugs. just plug in your usb cables.
buffet breakfast consists of croissants, plain porridge, cereals, hard boiled eggs, soup (mushroom or broccoli), coffee & tea.
there is also a laundry room on the top floor (8th)
staff is extremely polite and helpful. they will try to assist you in your travel necessities.
around the hotel, there is a 24hr convenience store (C2U), plenty of food available there. 1-2 minutes walk.
there are 2 markets nearby, walking is less than 10 minutes.
the underground tube station exit/entry is infront of the C2U. so it is very easy to get around in seoul.
for the bus going to airport, the airport bus stop is infront of Hotel Acacia (3 mins walk). it is very punctual.
Pro (+)
- Large room size with good facilities. Comfy bed with soft pillow and blanket. Coffee maker + coffee capsule and tea bag, kettle, in-room slipper, 2 bottles of water are provided.
- Large bathroom area with amenities e.g. shampoos, conditioner, soap, shower gel, tooth brush and tooth paste.
- Breakfast (start from 7am-10am) is not much variety but sufficient in term of quantity and quality. Despite small dining area, it was not crowded. Our room very close to dining area but no food smell / loud to be heard from my room.
- Helpful and friendly front staff who can communicate understand English quite well. They let us checked in before check-in time (fortunately it had available room). Special thanks to Mr. Park and Ms. Anna who assisted, gave advice, and made me feel comfortable during our stay.
- Location is ok. Because it is not located on main street (20 m in sub road from Main street), so it quite and hardly to hear voice from main street. The stop of Incheon Airport limousine (no 6001) is just across the road (200-300m away). Proximity to Seoul Metro Stations (Euljiro 4-ga – 350m for green line and purple line, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park – 500m for blue line, green line, and purple line). Convenience store just 100m away.
Con (-)
- No on-site parking space for the property. But I saw private parking building behind the hotel (fee to be applied).
- A little bit quite at night and far from Seoul nightlife area.
We had three different rooms during our two stays, 501, 301 and 6501. 501 and 301 were the larger rooms and were 28 sq. m. in size, I'm told, while 6501 was a so-called 'studio' room of 20 sq. m. 501 turned out to have an a/c issue so we were moved to 301 after the first night. The studio rooms are located between floors on the side staircase of the hotel, e.g., 1501,2501, 3501, etc. The sudio rooms were quieter than the standard rooms, in our experience.
One can tell the difference in size between the two different room types and we were concerned about the smaller room being OK for us, since we did NOT travel lightly for this trip, but it all worked out fine in the end. Except for the beds, both types of rooms had the same features: A separated shower and toilet/bidet in one room, a sink/vanity outside the bathroom, and in the main room, a desk with fridge, suitcase stand, fridge, a floor to ceiling closet with room for two suitcases plus room to hang at least 10 items and two drawers and a vault. The larger rooms had a king sized bed while the studio had a queen. Oh yes, the studio has smaller windows. No problem for me, especially since there's nothing to really look at in the area except builidngs! The TV was large (36"?? hey! this IS S. Korea, eh?!) and it had a least two English news channels (one North AMerican and one European).
Coffee and tea were supplied, as well as two 500ml complimentary bottles of water, daily. The Acube provides a pod-type coffee machine in each room (Hausbrandt Guzzini) and a kettle. I presume the coffee maker uses it's own unique pods and since we are big coffee drinkers, we asked the front desk where we could buy extra pods as we wanted more than one cup of coffee each in the morning. The Acube said they'd give us extra pods! At the end of day one we had well over 30 pods of coffee in our room, at no extra charge! Wow, nice! They also gave us extra bottles of water - 10 at one point! - for making the coffee but we were fine using the tap water for the coffee and tea.
The desk had an electrical outlet that could accommodate many different sized prongs from around the world and was labelled 220V *AND* 120V. So, we were able to plug in our 2- or 3-prong North American devices. HOWEVER, all of our devices are rated 120V-240V so I cannot say if the outlets were explicitly 220V or 120V. Bring your converter, to be safe, if your device doesn't cover the entire world voltage range. Oh yes, as a bonus, the desk also had a USB-sized electrical outlet which was great for charging a phone! Although I brought electrical adapters for S. Korea, I never had to use it at the Acube. Very convenient and it made a difference to us.
One day we left the hotel before breakfast was available (7 to 10am daily) and the Acube offered to provide us with a little something to sustain us. They generously provided each of us with juice, coffee, croissant and fruit. Another very nice service!
The maid did a great cleaning job every day and she left us extra towels and soap daily, as well as ensuring our coffee and water supply was topped up. I'm not sure why we got such preferential treatment at the Acube! My wife's only complaint was that there was no bedside table on her side of the bed plus no reading light for her (I use a Petzel for reading where ever I go so I don't wake up princess at 3am).
As for amenities nearby the hotel, there is a 7-11-type store a few doors away that is open 24/7: you can get yogurt, pop, beer, wine (limited) and the usual convenience store junk. You can use your credit card (VISA, in my case). We couldn't find a 'real' grocery store within a 1km radius but we then didn't look that hard. I'm sure there's something better than a 7-11 in the area. For cash, there's is a "Global ATM" machine at the Shinhan Bank at the intersection near the hotel. I didn't actually use that ATM; I only used the Woori Global ATM upon arrival at Incheon. I used a FX-free credit card for the most part while in S. Korea.
Seoul has a great and cheap transit system. It works on the tap-in/tap-out system of pre-loaded transit cards. Officially, exit 7 of Euljiro 4 Metro is nearest the Acube hotel. However, we found that the sidewalk stairs in front of the nearby convenience store lead to a subway that links to the Metro. There's stores underground in the subway that we didn't discover until near the end of our stay at the Acube (e.g. dry cleaners). The nearby subway entrance would definitely be nice in adverse weather like rain or snow plus it's air-conditioned down there, too!. So,it was easy to get to all of the tourist sites in Seoul from our Metro station. We took the airport limousine #6001 to/from Incheon Airport (it stops in front of the Baiton Hotel, about 150-200 m. away from the Acube).
Breakfast in the morning was basically self-serve continental. Being someone who tries his best to eat healthily, I went for the rice porridge and sprinkled it with sliced almonds, raisons, etc. There's also Kimchee, croissants, toast, North American-style cereals, Korean soups (different one daily), and a fruit of the day (banana, apple, or orange mostly). Of course, OJ, coffee, tea, and milk. It wasn't a huge spread but it worked for me.
There's not really any major attractions within a few kilometers of the hotel, at least that we went to, but with the help of TripAdvisor or Google Maps (I had a SIM card from Evergreen for my stay), you can find good restaurants and other things to do if you're tired and don't feel like going too far. The 'river' walk, Cheonggyecheon, was about two long blocks away (500 meters?). That was a nice, quiet walk on a beautiful warm evening! There's bars one Metro stop away at Jonggo 3, exit 6 where you can do shots of soju. If you want hard-core Korean food with no English menu available, there's plenty of places willing to provide it. Live eels? Pig snouts? Bibimbap? There's a number of markets close by where you can get those at very good prices. One of my relatives took me to a nearby back-alley, hole-in-the-wall restaurant for lunch. I never would've found it myself nor been able to order from the menu ... everything's out there just waiting for you to find it!
You can get a beer - Kloud? 3,500WON; the convenience store nearby has similar beers for 2000WON - anytime of the day from the front desk as well as a few other items (Coke, apple, etc.).
There's a washer, dryer and iron on the top floor, which we made use of, to prepare for the wedding we were in town for.
I don't know if one's permitted - we didn't ask - but you can access and walk around on the small-ish roof (8th floor?). You can see Seoul Tower from the roof of the Acube.
Summary: I'd definitely stay at the Acube again! Service from the front desk, especially the manager Min, was awesome. Min spoke English well, but some of the other employees weren't quite as fluent, but could get by. I can't think of anything major that went sideways for us except for the malfunctioning a/c in our first room, which can happen in any hotel (so I won't fault them for that). Hmmm, maybe THAT'S why we got the extra coffee, water and towels in our room? Yes, you can get cheaper rooms, especially an AirBnB, but this was a full service hotel with a decent price, which is what we wanted considering we were busy dealing with a wedding and weren't 100% tourists on this trip. Anyhow, we enjoyed our stay, we were comfortable and the staff went the extra mile for us at the Acube. I'd give it 4.5 out of 5.0.
Customer service: Great! On our first night, we had an issue with our door which was then handled immediately. We were also provided with any information we needed from the front desk (e.g. what's nearby, where we could grab a bite).
Room: Our room was facing the building with construction that was across from the hotel. In the morning, you can hear the construction work go on. Nothing too crazy, but we're fairly light sleepers and would be awakened by their banging and tapping.
On the work table, none of the outlets or usb plugs worked so we simply used the ones beside the bed to charge our stuff.
The water pressure for our shower, AMAZING!
The light control was sometimes sensitive, sometimes not. The bathroom light would sometimes shut off itself without the light control being touched. (Think about showering or going to the bathroom + all of a sudden it is completely dark).
Breakfast: Served from 7am-10am. They serve croissants, orange juice, milk, coffee/tea, eggs, congee, cereal, fruit, and soup of the day (during our stay, it revolved around cream of broccoli, corn or mushroom).
Public Transportation: We only traveled by subway so can't comment on any other means of transportation such as bus or taxi because the subway seemed convenient, inexpensive, user-friendly, + that's how we roll. (Side note: Yes, even coming from airport to hotel + headed to the airport from hotel, we took the subway. No airport limousine/bus for us. With the airport bus, depending on when you're leaving, you should also put into consideration rush hour traffic on the road, as well as the costs of course. Clearly there are pros + cons to both).
Not too far from the hotel, the nearest entryway leading towards the subway is Exit 7-8 at the Euljiro 4-ga stop on Line 2 (green line). Once you step out of the hotel, you walk to your right, out in the direction where the big street is, where you see Hotel Acacia but don't cross the big street. You'll see Exit 7-8 to your left. You walk down the flight of stairs, where it will bring you to the underground passageway that you can walk through to get to the subway. From there, just follow the signs. Fyi: Be prepared to take a stroll for about 10~15 minutes till you actually reach the subway station itself.
Nearby: Right beside the Euljiro 4-ga stop exit 7-8, is a place that sells fried chicken (that we didn't get to try) + beside it a C2U convenience store. Gwangjang Market is probably about a 20~25 minute walk, or at least it felt like a distance away given when we walked there, it was chilly, + we were hungry. We went to Gwangjang Market at about 10ish on a Sunday night and even though there were stands open, the market was pretty empty. We went on another day around 6~7pm and it looked like a completely different market with much more to offer, so make sure not to go too late despite it being open late. Dongdaemun area is about 10~15 minutes away from Gwangjang Market. (This is based on the same circumstances in previous sentence: cold, hungry, tired). You're probably better off asking the staff at hand for more concrete directions.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at this hotel. : )
We stayed March 2016, traveled as a couple
I arrived Seoul at around 9AM and check-in was supposedly not until 3PM. When I did my online reservation, I had made a special request for an early check-in and the hotel was gracious enough to give my request and checked me in as soon as I arrived. The free room upgrade was also a lovely bonus!!
With this being my second time in Seoul, I purposedly chose to stay in the Dongdaemun area as the Myeongdong area was too busy and touristy for me. And I'm glad I chose this neighborhood as it is quiet and more laid-back but has almost everything within arm's reach!
>> There are 2 airport shuttle terminals (2-5 minute walk)
>> A convenience store at the corner
>> 2 banks and fruit stands within the same street
>> An entire lane of money exchange stalls nearby
>> Blue Bus Terminals around the area (2 minute walk)
>> Exit 7 of Dongdaemun Design History and Culture Park Station (thru the Euljistar Mall) which connects you all the way to Exit 1 of this subway station and brings you to the Green (Line 2) , Blue (Line 4), and Purple (Line 5) lines.
>> A chicken & beer place at the corner by rhe convenience store.
It is also very close to Gwangjang Market Place and Dongdaemun Design Plaza/History and Culture Park (both about 5 to 10 minutes away by foot).
The rooms are very clean. The bed is queen-sized and soft (foam and not spring). The room is spacious for one traveler. The bathroom is spacious enough for the size of an Asian woman but the bath is a little bit small and cramped up in space. However, I love how clean the bathroom is and how the toilet seat is automated with controls for bidet, dryer, and seat heater.
Breakfast was nothing exceptional but was good enough. I noted that they alternated the menu every 2-3 days.
Internet wifi was fast and uninterrupted.
The staff were easy to talk to as they understood English (but you might have to speak slowly). In particular, I appreciated the kindness of Seol Kim and Jay (both receptionists).
I am glad to have chosen this hotel for my first trip alone. The place definitely lives up to its slogan --- accessible, affordable, and amiable. I will definitely recommend this place to family and friends who will visit Seoul and will definitely come back here on my next visit to Seoul.
1) excellent customer service. They have staff who can speak English, Chinese and Japanese. Not the most fluent but enough to be understood and to help with our enquiries. Always filled with smiles and ready to help.
2) being a new hotel, the bedding and bathroom amenities are in great condition. Bed was comfy. Pillows on the softer side. Proper bath towels were given. However no toothbrush was given in the room. Not sure if the housekeeping would have it. we didn't check as we brought our own.
3) our family double room had a generous amount of space to place 2 large + 1 medium luggage and a stroller.
4) many hotels charge for breakfast but this one, they have included into the price yet are still able to keep prices affordable. Don't expect fancy breakfast but certainly enough to fill you before you start your day.
5) there's a laundry room with self operated dryer (2000 won) and washing machine (2000 won). There's a soap dispenser machine too (500 won). Ironing board and iron are found in the same room (level 8).
6) there's a Junbu market just 2 minutes down the side street. A place to stock up dried produce like seaweed, anchovies, fish and there are stalls selling kimchi. There are a couple of local eating stores but we didn't try.
7) airport limousine bus (#6001) stops just across the street near Benikea Hotel Acacia. It takes about 1.5 hours depending on traffic.
8) there's an underground tunnel just steps outside the hotel that would lead to the main dongdaemum area. We didn't get to use it as we had a stroller with us. Too cumbersome to take the stairs.
What we didn't enjoy as much:
1) it's still a good 10-15 min walk to the happening streets of dongdaemum. we had seniors and young kids with us so we took a longer time. I would have preferred the action to be like "at the corner just downstairs". By the time I saw another feedback that warned of the distance, it was a little late for me to find alternatives given our laundry list of hotel requirements. lol!
We took cabs when we have to go anywhere further so can't comment on the trains or buses.
2) there isn't many eating options within 5 min of walk except for a chicken and beer shop. Serves yummy friend chicken though. The city seems to be filled with such chicken and beer outlets. ;) the hotel can help you place delivery orders too. Be prepared for a long wait if it's on a weekend.
3) our room faces the next building and when curtains are drawn, you can look into the room in there! I'm someone who loves to open the curtains in the morning so this is not a plus for me.
