Avoid this hostel. The rudest manager ever with large round earrings shouted at me and turned me away for arriving late, even though I had made a booking earlier. It was late in the middle of the night and the hostel is located in an isolated area. I felt very unsafe as a woman.

I would always stay there on stopover in Nairobi but ownership has changed and the place that I am aware hasn't re-opened yet. Hope it happens so we can start sending guests there again! Looking forward to being back!

To keep travellers up to date, this brilliant Campsite and Backpackers run by Jesse, Rich and their staff closed in July 2014. The new owners state on the web-site that it would reopen on October 1, but as of 7 November 2014 when we passed by, it remains closed. Sad for regular customers like me, and for all those who... I have stayed at Upper Hill four times and I have always found Jesse to be a great host. I have stayed in one of the communal bunk bedrooms which is basic but adequate. I have also spent 2 nights in the outside cabins and they are nice. At certain times of the day the staff fire up the water... More

I have not stayed in any other parts of Nairobi which i think is good to know. This is one of the most safe areas, you have the arcade pretty close by for food and sometimes some drinks. Otherwise it´s Nairobi so it can be a b**** going places in general. I was here during low season so might be... More

I had the best nights of sleep here while in Nairobi after enjoying lovely evenings on their grounds with dinner and cocktails. No frills, meet your neighbor-style accommodations but still with plenty of privacy. I stayed in a cabin for 3000ksh per night ($35). Bathrooms are shared and there is only hot water in the mornings and evenings for showers... More

My friend and I stayed there for 3 nights and we had a great experience. We asked for a taxi to pick us up and the guy was friendly and even gave us a mini tour around the city (although he overcharged us a bit, but anyway..). I imagine trying to find the place on your own is quite hard... More

If at all possible be armed with a map or road address on your way as there used to be another upper hill and taxi drivers will always try and take you to the former one which is down a rather sinister dark alley, so make sure you know where you are going. Upper hill is beautiful. Set in lush... More

Upper Hill was our home base while traveling around Kenya for a month and we can't imagine having stayed anywhere else. We didn't know exactly where we wanted to travel during that month and Jesse, the owner, gave us great recommendations and knew exactly how to get everywhere using cheap local transport. It's location is a big plus - you... More

We stayed here for one night and were impressed by the cosy, clean and comfortable rooms. Staff are cheerful and a wide variety of delicious home-made food is available until late.(I can recommend the stew!) The hostel/campsite is a good source of information and very helpful with regard to arranging taxis etc and it has a lively travellers' atmosphere with people... More
