Located in the Mara North Conservancy, the heart of the Masai Mara ecosystem, Elephant Pepper Camp is the perfect base from which to explore the wonders of the Mara. The vast, fertile plains of the Maasai Mara boasts a plethora of wildlife; with over 450 bird species and both resident and transient populations of lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, to name a few, the plains are dense with game. Elephant Pepper Camp is perfect for those wanting to observe the spectacle of the migration, classified amoung the “Seven Wonders of the World”, when, from July to November, over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti in search of greener pastures.

Detailed Reviews
Hidden in a copse of trees, Elephant Pepper Camp provided clean and comfortable tented en suite accommodations, delicious meals and wonderful guides (Francis and James). The lounge and dining areas were comfortable and particularly attractive at night. The Maasai Mara is gorgeous and our safaris were well done (the guides had an excellent knowledge of the wildlife) and we saw a wide variety of animals every day. We had a nice stay.
Looking back, while I would say that this camp is very nice, the service and the camp overall weren't quite up to the level of the other camps we visited.
We (4 couples) arranged our trip through Africa Travel Centre in Boulder, Colorado who did an excellent job of planning with us and making everything go smoothly. They know Africa well and focus on high quality, conservation-minded camps that care a great deal about the environment and the wildlife.

We're on our final day at amazing at EPC in Masai Mara. The welcome by Moses and his staff was warm and informative. The lodging is very comfortable, exceptionally cleaned by Dickson, with brass fixtures polished to a brilliant finish at each room departure and laundry handwashed and folded .
Game drives are epic , with Francis seeming to know where animals would be even before they arrived. Saw leopards, several lion prides with cubs, cheetahs leisurely strolling a few meters away , many elephants, gitaffes and herds of hippos in the river, active hunts, to name only a few highlights. We were taught well about the animals and were so safe in great hands even with a torrential downpour at the very end of one drive. Huge waterproof ponchos with flannel lining were brought to keep us dry and warm.
Most importantly... the food is gourmet in presentation , quality and finesse of the menu ! John Mark with prepared sumptuous and ever changing selections of the freshest delicately prepared unique presentations of Kenyan and international dining with a fresh local twist. Fresh touches included nasturtium flowers, fried sage leaves , beets grown on site, and greens that came from the garden steps away. The visual presentation of all was stunning and printed menus allowed a selection of starters , mains and dessert at dinner. Local Kenyan cheeses on a cheese board and the amazing freshly made breads with homemade ice creams were some of our favorites. Simon served us with kindness and warmth.
Breakfast was served at tables in the midst of the am drives , with fresh yogurt, cereal, fruit , and a daily variety of items like egg burritos or Scotch eggs. Game was nearby for viewing during breakfast.
Similarly, sundowners were accompanied by tasty snacks and often the best game viewing while enjoying a cocktail!
Overall, this camp excelled in all that was important... the abundance of game on the drives, the professional , warm and kind service and the quality and presentation of fined dining that is seen in major cities !
Go now... while John Mark, my favorite chef can spoil you, and Moses will assure that this will the the experience of a lifetime!
Asante sana!

This luxury tented camp with its prime location in the Mara offers friendly, attentive service, delicious food, and great opportunities for viewing the amazing variety of abundant wildlife in the area. Elephant Pepper has a genuine camp feel, yet gives nothing away in terms of comfort. General manager Kingsley Biddington does a fine job keeping the camp running smoothly. He leads by example and it shows in terms of the excellent physical condition of the camp and the enthusiasm and warmth of the staff to make guests feel welcome. Amos, our server, has a great sense of humor and made our meals and sundowners that much more enjoyable. Dixon, our very kind housekeeper, kept our tent clean and well maintained, as well as ensuring delivery of hot chocolate to our tent early each morning before safari. Our guide, James, was outstanding. His considerable experience and knowledge of the area paid off time and time again. On one occasion his patience resulted in us witnessing a female lion, Hamba, begin stalking a gazelle, take it, carry it to a nearby marsh, and totally consume her prey. On another occasion James enabled us to locate and follow, sometimes quite closely, a female leopard through the bush. We hope to return to wonderful Elephant Pepper again for holiday in the near future. I encourage you to make it your choice for a wildlife safari experience in Kenya. You will be very happy you did.

I had the pleasure of staying at Elephant Pepper Camp in November 2019, although considered the rainy season, this had no detrimental effect on our game viewing. We did have some rain in the evenings, but the incredible staff made sure our spirits weren't dampened, keeping our glasses top up, our bellies filled with delicious food and sharing stories of life in the bush.
The rooms are a good size with all the necessary amenities, and while fairly simple, are perfectly comfortable and offer that sense of adventure and connection with the wilderness that is so important with safari camps. You drift of to sleep to the sounds of the bush with lion roaring in the distance. The atmosphere in camp is warm and friendly, and the guides are extremely knowledgeable and really bring the safari experience to life.
The camp is located in a remote area of the Mara North Conservancy, so you barely see anyone else on your game drives, just lots of wildlife! I would absolutely recommend Elephant Pepper to anyone looking for a game rich, high quality, authentic safari experience far from the crowds of the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Excellent.

We arrived at the Maasai-Mara North airstrip to be met with hot towels and refreshment before the transfer to Elephant Pepper. On the way we saw a Cheetah mother and two cubs as well as other animals.
On arrival at the lodge we were met with hot towels and drinks followed by lunch then a full briefing by the camp manager. The monkeys are so clever at getting into tents the zips need to be secured by carbine hook. You could move around the camp freely during the day and there were staff at night always there to escort you.
The camp is in a wooded area with views out into the distance where from time to time you could see elephants, giraffes and even a hippo. The camp and the area around were very peaceful.
The tent had all the facilities we expected and had a shaded patio out in front. It was short distance from the main area along paved paths. All housekeeping services were very good.
Our guide was Sammy (a local Maasai) for our three night stay. Sammy was friendly and very good as our guide. We went out on morning drives from about 6:30 to about 11am and had breakfast in the bush. Afternoon drives were from about 4:30 to dusk which included a sundowner. The sunsets were amazing. On both early morning and late afternoon we needed extra layers on as the conservancy is quite high up and much cooler than the other parks we have been to.
The sighting during our stay included four cheetah family sighting, four lion sighting with one being a large pride with cubs, and leopard sighting which Sammy spotted which other guides touring around had failed to see. At one cheetah sighting the family were finishing off a young Topi and we followed them when they came across a hare which all three chased, but it escaped down a hole in the ground.
Sammy looked very hard for more leopards, but our luck had run out. There was other wildlife we saw special to the area such as the Masai Giraffe, Topi and Wildebeest.
There were three course lunches and dinner with lunch served in front of the main area buildings where you could see wildlife going by and dinner was in one of the two restaurant buildings. The food was of good quality and the waiting staff were excellent.
In summary, the density of wildlife in the northern conservancy was not high but there was plenty of wildlife to see. Our guide Sammy was excellent, very conscious of our safety and marvellous at finding and telling us about the wildlife we saw.

This was a true luxury safari tented camp experience, and nicer than it looks at first in the photos. Elephant Pepper camp was truly amazing. Highlights: the location, the food, the people, the "feeling."
The location, in Mara North conservancy is great. We much preferred the less crowded conservancy to the national park and would generally recommend remaining in the private conservancy areas. The hotels location also overlooks a bit of an "elephant highway," so for much of the day you can just sit and watch the elephants wander back and forth right in front of you. It's pretty spectacular.
The food: The food was also amazing, and one of the best surprises of the trip. I was expecting rather bland food on safari, but all of the Elewana camps were amazing. The food was healthy, nutritious, and above all delicious. John Mark also had "taste of Africa" meals that were my favorites.
The people (and our guide): By the time we arrived, this was our last camp. We felt like over the previous 6 days we'd seen all of the animals we could see. Knowing this, our guide James went out of his way to show us some things that we hadn't seen. He spent a lot of time finding lions (my favorite), including lions having dinner (poor zebra, poor hippo), lion cubs playing, and hyenas waiting in the shadows for their turn at the lion food. He showed us our first cheetah (gorgeous), and a rather shocking display of crocodiles decimating zebras (a little gruesome for me, but my family was enraptured).
The people at the camp were also amazing. Our waiter Robert was so kind. John Mark is a chef talent to be reckoned with. Everyone was incredible.
The feeling: as I mentioned, this camp was the ultimate "tented safari camp experience." Very 1920s, but with a lot more respect for people and animals. The tents were cozy with lovely furniture. The showers were hot with surprisingly great water pressure. There were blankets for us to use, robes, toiletries--whatever you might need.
Lastly (and important): Elewana and its partner/subsidiary Chelli and Peacock (the original owner of the camp), have a deep respect for conservation and the community. You feel that being here and are happy to be a part of it and hope to contribute towards their vision and goals.

It's heartening to hear that your time with us lived up to your expectations and that you found it even better than what you initially saw in the photos. We're thrilled that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay, and we appreciate you highlighting what made it special. The location: We agree, our camp's location in the Mara North Conservancy is truly outstanding. If you’re looking for a truly personalized luxury Safari experience, don’t hesitate to stay here. We stayed at two other camps, but the density and quick and easy access of wildlife and the “Big Five” were incredible here. Our driver’s first question was, “What do you want to see?” We said “cats” and in matter of a few hours we saw lions, cheetahs, and leopards (all had cubs BTW), in addition to the usual suspects, zebras, giraffes, and of course, elephants, many of which were in proximity of our tent and huge back yard, which overlooked the vast plains. We heard their trumpets at night. If you happen to get Leperes as your driver, you’ve won the safari lottery. Off-roading is permitted, which other camps do not do! This guy finds a way to get safely front and center of the animal while respecting their territory and politely allowing access to other safari drivers and patrons who eventually show. You will not experience a parking lot of other safari cars as we witnessed in other camps. The “tents” are classically beautiful, incredibly private, clean, sanitary, comfortable, spacious, and the hot water bottles at turn down service are a plus. The FOOD WAS AMAZING and plentiful! No traveler tummy for us! Cocktail hour and tea by the campfire were fabulous. Moses, the GM, couldn’t have been more hospitable. He was intent on making sure everything exceeded our expectations. Folks here at home are amazed by our “National Geographic” photos, all taken with an iphone, but looking as if we had a bazooka camera which isn’t necessary here. EPC is quiet, beautiful, and romantic for couples. Families were present but we didn’t experience the cacophony of children and preferential treatment of families with children which we experienced at another camp. We sat privately most nights but also had the choice to sit with others we met in camp. No negatives to report. The shower water is clearly treated with a purification system including a water softener, so if you wash your hair and don’t like the result, just rinse with the bottled water they amply provide. As far as the cost/benefit ratio goes, we believe we got more than our money’s worth. Love Elewana camps much more than other camps we visited. If you can afford it, take the small planes when transferring to the Maasai Mara rather than taking the bumpy roads.

Can’t say enough about my stay at Elephant pepper camp! Elephant Pepper camp is hands down INCREDIBLE! Located right in the middle of the Mara North conservancy, surrounded by wild animals. I’ve spent 4 nights here and did not want to leave! The Night game drive, surprise delicious birthday cake and watching a pride of Lions was my highlight! I experienced such a genuine hospitality from the moment I set foot in the Camp, felt right at home. From the fantastic guides to delicious meals, every staff member was unbelievably accommodating and helpful! Special thanks to Tom and Alison (Camp Managers) Francis my guide, was extremely knowledgeable and experienced, spotted animals miles away! The head chef and the rest of the team were very helpful and made my visit so memorable. They were available at every request and provided excellent services. The chef was amazing and food very delicious! excellent service all round! Not forgetting different varieties of wines from the bar! And oh! Relaxing with a good book and wine after the morning drive, it’s never a dull day at the animal Kingdom! The surrounding is simply breathtaking, I cannot think of a more perfect way to express my gratitude and appreciate the beauty of wildlife! I have met amazing people and we’ve become friends! Elephant Pepper Camp far exceeded my expectations and I hope to return sometime soon! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Already planning my next trip, I will be back! Thank you Elephant Pepper Camp

Bottom line - book as many nights at Elephant Pepper as your budget and vacation days can support! We loved every minute at Elephant Pepper. We stayed here for 4 nights, mid-September 2024. The staff went above and beyond to create the perfect stay for us. They were all so kind (a special shout out to Jeremiah for hosting our stay and Amos for providing exceptional service at every meal!). Every detail was thought of - from the umbrellas & bug spray in the tent to the ponchos for game drives in the rain (although it only rained one afternoon, and we saw almost no bugs/mosquitos/flies during our entire visit), the snacks & beverages in the jeeps when were out and about, the morning coffee by campfire before our game drives, and the menus accommodating our pescatarian diet (and my inability to eat dairy). The highlight of our stay was the twice-daily game rides with our exceptional guide (Alfred). Alfred was extraordinarily knowledgeable about all the animals - we saw and learned so much! The safari tents were beautiful and we slept well ("tents" gives the impression that you are somehow roughing it - but there was running water, electricity, wifi, and even a hair dryer if needed). Every meal was delicious - we were never hungry. Laundry was easy and always returned to us the next day (you did have to wash your own undergarments, but laundry soap was provided in your tent to easily do so if needed). Mornings and evenings in mid-September were cool, so pack a fleece jacket and a hat/gloves (we are from Minnesota and were glad to have these). Afternoons are warm and the equator sun is no joke - bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and long sleeve layers. The day in the Masai Mara was extraordinary - while we didn't see the wildebeests crossing the Mara River, we did see the sea of wildebeests that is the great migration already in the Masai Mara and was indescribable. If you have time, the visit to the white rhino sanctuary is totally worth it!

Our experience at Elephant Pepper Camp was outstanding. The staff was professional but also warm and welcoming. None of our questions went unanswered, they even anticipated our needs before we asked. The tents setup was as comfortable as any hotel room I have stayed at but had the added experience of being surrounded by fresh air, wildlife, visible stars at night and a constant soothing breeze. The shower was always hot enough, two separate sinks, plenty of towels and good lighting. The bed and pillows were VERY comfortable and a place to sit outside and admire the incredible landscape with added bonus of a hammock. The food was better than many restaurants in big cities. There was always a vegetarian option which was also delicious, kudos to Jean Marc the chef. Our meal server Joshua was wonderful. Our guide Francis was extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and had a sixth sense as to where to go to see the animals, including spotting a cheetah sprinting across the savannah and catching a gazelle. He was a safe driver and he also intuitively knew where to park the car so we could get great photos. He went above and beyond to make sure we were safe and well take care of. He constantly noticed when we left things behind including an expensive pair of binoculars just before we took off in a plane from Masai Mara. I was so impressed with how well the staff took care of us and never seemed put out by any requests. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Nairobi 1977-79 and visited lots of game parks. I never had as wonderful of an experience as I did at Elephant Pepper Camp.Since it is a conservancy, they are working with the locals cooperatively and built the camp to be very eco-sustainable.
Having served int the Peace Corps for 2 years in Nairobi, and traveled to many different game parks, Elephant Pepper Camp is a standout in every way.

Yes, there is WiFi in the main reception area and dining hall. We sat outside and had WiFi as we watched the elephants.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA337 contributions45 helpful votesAre there robes provided in the room for if it gets cold at night? Or does it not get that cold? Trying to decide if I need to pack something warm to sleep in
In February, there were dressing gowns and there was a hot water bottle in the bed
I'm so sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
We run a 24 hour solar power system. We have charging facilities in the library and lounge, but don't have facilities to run hair dryers because of their energy requirements.
Hi,
A booking agent in South Africa made the reservations for me, but you can contact Elewana, the parent company directly.
Good luck. You will have a great time.
Hi , I was not a lone traveller but there were two lone travellers staying at the camp whilst we were there. I cannot speak highly enough of EPC having stayed in numerous other camps across Kenya and Tanzania. February is a great time to visit as it is not so busy , weather is great and if you like birds there are many additional migrant species to see who spend their winter in Africa. Book it , you wont regret your decision.
