Honestly speaking, this wasn't a place for comfortable staying. If you don't know the history or the culture you probably find this place rather disappointing. This place is the former residence of Yoshiko Kawashima, who was a princess of Qing Dynasty and a espionage of Japan during early 18th. Furnitures there all got strong history background. Not suitable for those...

I recently had to travel to Beijing, China for business. Since it was my first visit to China, I wanted to experience it first hand. This included not making a reservation at a mainstream hotel. But boy did this backfire big time! Although the staff are extremely helpful and friendly, I just couldn’t look past the bad state the hotel...

I am very torn about this review. It is without a doubt a very special place to stay. All the details, the books, the furniture, photos, revolvers, telephones, paintings, sculptures - it's taking you back into the Mao age as per the hotel's promise. The courtyard setup around the tree is beautiful. The staff was great - they were always...

Cute courtyard boutique hotel gives you a sense of the hutong. Walkable to Forbidden Palace, Tiananmen Square, drum/bell tower. Easy access to subway. Friendly, helpful staff. The rooms are decorated with antiques. Breakfast was fine and included. The bomb shelter bar is a must see. Mattresses are very hard but I realize that all beds in China seem to be...

My husband and I toured China two summers ago and this was definitely a highlight. Bejing is a noisy, dirty capital city -- even the Forbidden City was a little disappointing owing to the crowds -- but the Red Capital was an oasis. Quiet, clean, and decorated in Oriental kitsch -- in a good way! There's an inner courtyard with...

As we stepped through the door of the Red Capital Residence from the hustle and bustle of the Hutong we entered another world. We were met with a warm welcome (and a pot of tea)! The courtyard is a haven of tranquility, shaded by a mature poplar tree. The rooms are exquisitely decorated, the whole place is a visual feast,...

We did not stay at the this Residence but was there for an evening night out. Located quite obscure from the rest of the common hotels/residences, this one is located in a courtyard in the Dongsi District, which is a preserved heritage site. Preserved in its old traditional Chinese style, antique if you may say, it has 5 rooms only......

My wife and myself stayed here for 4 nights in June and loved this place for it's decor and very friendly staff. It is nicely situated in one of the old blocks in the city of Beijing. We stayed in the Mao suite and also got the opportunity to see the old bomb shelter, converted to a bar (which i...

We had a lovely stay. Having lived in Beijing in the 1980'ies, it was wonderful to be back in the Hutongs, which are now under threat from developers. Moreover, for anyone with a bit of interest in the history of 20th century China, it will be a great experience. Sure, there is a bit of dust on Zhou Enlai's personal...

A unique experience in an authentic and original Beijing Hutong house that enriched our China adventure. The staff were helpful and always present. The rooms were quaint, and as such not the most comfortable, but that probably added to the authentic experience. The rooms could have been cleaner. All in all, it was an unforgettable experience.
