Upon check in, we have received warm welcome and birthday greetings from Front desk colleague. While the hotel is celebrating their 10th anniversary, complimentary tote bag and water bottle with the hotel painting and logo were given as souvenirs for every reservations. After registration, they also provided a room tour with detailed information which was really thoughtful. Due to birthday celebration, a plate of egg waffle with drinks of Begonia fimbristipula (紫背天葵) which is a local ingredient of Tai O were arranged and sent to our room. Thank you so much for the surprise!
The suite was newly renovated for two months only and the design was cozy while some historical items were still kept. As the hotel is located in the outskirts, there are always some little insects and the hotel had provided repellent in room. Overall cleanliness was good as well. Besides, the hotel kept focusing on environmental protection which tooth brushes were on request and there was a water bottle in room for refill from water machine in the corridor.
Breakfast and dinner were included in package with a celebration cake and a bottle of sparkling wine which was very convenient for us as the hotel was a bit far away from centre of Tai O. The restaurant, Tai O Lookout was beautifully designed with the awesome sea view. Food quality was over expectation with excellent service. The package was definitely worth for money.
Last but not least, we would like to say thank you to Front Dest team, especially Mini, Feli & Coco for the smooth arrival and departure experience. Also, Lok from Tai O Lookout also provided warm hearted service with attention to details. Thank you so much all for your hospitality!
Whilst it is a unique experience to stay in a restored heritage building, we feel that it would be a "one time occasion for us" and sense this is the market they are catering for. We would not return and would not recommend this to our friends and colleagues ( we have lived in HK for 16 years). A super endeavour to restore a heritage building but the building should work and we felt it was struggling. We were perplexed on learning there were no windows in the suite which is certainly not clear in the photographs, although there are two chairs outside the room on the shared balcony looking out to sea.. The door was fragile and was tricky to open. Most surprising was there was no way to control the air con in the room, this was operated for some reason by the building management, which meant it was either freezing or when the temperature was adjusted accordingly for more warmth created condensation everywhere. In addition, the air con motor was so loud that both of us had an appalling night's sleep, it was certainly not a relaxing room at all. One of the toilets did not flush and there were no English speaking channels on the TV.
Up in the restaurant Lookout ,the service was brisk but efficient, the wine was nice, the meal fine, but the celebration cake was a "dessert of chocolate mousse". Breakfast was modest, and would have been good for a modest sum. So all in all, a lukewarm response from us, but we did manage to get some nice insta photos round the property, but such a shame the memories did not match the photos! Come on Tai Ho Heritage Hotel, this can be much better.
After getting off from the bus terminal, we took a tour boat through the water village of stilt huts, and did a bit of dolphin watching near the General's Rock, before landing at the pier just next to this hotel. If the daily guided tours of the hotel wasn't suspended by the pandemic, it could have made the trip perfect.
This is a remote site (in Hong Kong terms) and only filled with tourists in weekend and public holidays. We picked a weekday visit for the serenity but missed local cuisines and snacks because many restaurants and street vendors only operate on weekends. On the other side, that might also contributed to our luck of seeing a wild dolphin coming up really close to our boat because less tour boats operating means less noise and stress for them.
We've booked dinner at the hotel's restaurant the Lookout, The roof and side walls are giant glass panels so it has an outdoor atmosphere free of bugs and away from the heat. Food and service were excellent and really great value for money.
Highly recommended for staycation!! I would like to come again if the travelling condition doesn't improve in the coming winter... because by then hiking in the green hills will be enjoyable!
All the staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast that was included was not quite in the gourmet category but it was very tasty and substantial. They were also able to cater somewhat to my girlfriend's dietary sensitivities. I suppose this is one area that might be improved upon however.
The room was great. Large, clean bathrooms (yes, two of them) and the split into sitting room and bedroom, combined with high ceilings and hardwood floors made for a terrific stay.
All in all, this would be a trip worth doing again.
After the visitors left we got to enjoy some peace, and the morning was wonderful.
The hotel restaurant was disappointing. They didn’t have our first 3 choices and we had to settle for other menu items. Then, food came out one at a time, sometimes with huge lag times between plates. This worked out ok for us as our family of 4 shared a lot of the food, but I think this would be quite awkward for people not intending to share food as only one person would be eating at a time. Granted, we did go at the end of a 5 day weekend so the staff were probably all exhausted.
The included breakfast was pretty good and with large portions, so we were able to share with our 2 kids without having to order additional food.
I do think staying overnight was nice because we got to enjoy a quiet morning. However I’m not sure I would stay here again. I may pick one of the less expensive inns in the village.
Someone should have spotted them easily before the guests were brought to the room;
2. There was hair tangled in the fresh towels given to us;
3. There was stain on the bedsheets;
4. There were peanuts on the armchair;
5. There was hair in one of the set dinner dishes.
As much as my partner and I enjoy the scenery and story of the hotel, we cannot accept such outrageously unhygienic services despite the remote island location. Not only did the hotel fail to meet our expectation for the cost we paid, it also made the rest of our night there utterly unpleasant. Please put more effort into improving and maintaining the hotel's cleanliness to make the reputation worth the price.
We really do love the place, but it is a huge mistake and disappointment indeed.
It’s a small hotel, 9 rooms. The lower floor ones are a bit busy, open to day visitors so you need to keep your curtains closed. Upper floor would be better. Restaurant lacks ambiance, ok for breakfast or a daytime cafe but not really a nice evening meal type place. A pity as the location suggests it could be. Food is quite pleasant though. Nothing special but good none the less. Service was good.
Nice setting, good hikes nearby. Tai O is interesting to wander around and you can get a boat trip out to see pink Dolphins if you are lucky. We hiked there from Tung Chung. a lovely walk around the coast with a couple of small villages en route. Takes 5 hours though!
Overall a lovely little break
Firstly, i never thought the 20 min ‘dolphin sighting’ boat trip that will also take me to the hotel will mount to anything. But on this mild hazy day, we saw at least 3 pink dolphins frolicking against the background of hk- macau- zhuhai bridge.
The room with 2 double beds and seaview was as advertised. Lovely to sit outside in the morning and night listening to sound of waves.
The restaurant’s menu thoughtfully used Tai O special ingredients like shrimp toast with salted egg, mountain begonia egg waffle. The minestrone was the best ive tasted. The sirloin n slow cooked salmon were cooked just right, tender inside. Breakfast had good variety, and nice; but same both days.
Most of all, the reception and restaurant staff were friendly and helpful. You feel they were different from these ‘max profit’ commercial hotels. When my daughter decided to stay overnight with us, they didnt charge extra. They told us no need order extra breakfast, as the standard breakfast may be enough for 3. Sure enough!
We also did hikes with the information they gave (though some actual maps to the longer hikes like 龍仔悟園, 牙鷹角,monastries would have been perfect)
If you want to feel youve taken a restive holiday without leaving hk, Tai O and this hotel is a great choice.
