Stayed there in January 2017, on my way to Borobudur. In conclusion, briefly, the Phoenix is of great cultural interest. Nearly all items displayed in the public area are cultural artifacts. Highly recommended that you look around all parts of the hotel. Probably the management pays too much attention on the public area though. Ample space at the lobby and...

My oh, my... is there anything negative to say about this place? We lucked out by making a reservation at this hotel. Our plan was see Borobudur and the Prambanan, and we got an amazing hotel experience along the way! In fact, when realizing Borobudur was a distance away, we booked another hotel closer to the temple for easier access,...

As soon as I arrived I knew I would enjoy my stay here. So much character and charm to this old colonial-style hotel. My room was on the small side but made up for it with the lovely period furniture and clever use of the limited space. The bathroom functioned very well. The breakfast offered a huge array of choices....

The hotel look and feel are impressive. There are several beautiful spots for photo shooting. The service was excellent. The biggest drawback is that there is a big cemetery at the back of the hotel and it could be seen very up close from my room balcony. I think it changed my pretty and impressive hotel to be like haunted...

as an asian couple we were not able to enjoy the service which they give to white people - for example during bfast when we were almost done eating there's no coffee yet that has been served while we see how they asked and served the others -

We stayed here for 3 nights in a room overlooking the swimming pool. These rooms are on the backside of the hotel (so furthest from main entrance and restaurant). No street noise, only some noise from the pool itself. There seem to be no opening/closing time of the pool, but luckily we were not bothered by midnight swimmers. Rooms are...

I don't usually use hotel amenities when I travel but decided to stay at Phoenix as it was an affordable luxury in Jogja. Loved the beds and had good sleep (they give ear plugs as it is a Muslim country and they have prayers blasted on loud speakers at about 4.30am daily). Pool is pretty though it's more to soak...

The hotel is beautiful , white marble floor, I think colonial style balcony , flowing fountain in the middle of breakfast diner , and full of Indonesia arts and temple motif replicas. Clean and comfortable. Breakfast is full of varieties and their menu changes slightly everyday. Location is good, 10 min walking to jl malioboro, maybe 20 minutes walking or...

My husband and I had a great stay at the Phoenix on the way to Borobudor . Our room had a balcony that overlooked the courtyard which was nice. Room was spacious. Bathroom a little tired looking, but did the job. Bar area was cozy and staff very friendly. Breakfast next morning was great, with lots to choose from. The...

I stayed here for five nights. The hotel itself is an attractive old building. The staff were always solicitous and friendly, though the levels of English varied quite a bit. My room was quite small and rather dark. There were tiny ants in the bathroom and sometimes running along the desk; I had to stop to pick one of my...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This legenderay hotel was initially built as private estate in 1918. Through the ensuing decades, the property changed hands a number of times, until a Dutch caretaker turned it into Pensioner Hotel. The Phoenix name was deliberately chosen by the last proprietor who hoped that it would remain intact forever, believing in the ancient myth of The Phoenix, the sacred fire bird symbolizing regeneration throughout eternity. The Phoenix Hotel is elegantly situated in down town Yogyakarta, the cradle of Javanese civilization. The legendary Malioboro Street is just nearby, while the world herigate Borobudur and Prambanan temples are only an hour drive. Yogyakarta's cultural heritage and picturesque settings emit a distinctive charm that seldom fails its visitors. The 144 beautifully appointed rooms are reflecting the ambiance of bygone era wrapped in modern comfort facilities, enabling its occupant to celebrate a glorious past without losing the beauty of contemporary living. ... more   less
