Based on the Vogue Magazine listing Tiong Bahru #4 of the World's Coolest Neighbourhoods in 2014, I decided to find a hotel or hostel there for my two night stay in Singapore. This led me to Coo Boutique Hostel. This is no standard hostel. Though its cool, modern and stylish, its built in a "shophouse", a traditional shop and residential building.
I stayed in an eight person room. There's ample room to store your belongings, a combination locker within the bunk, a reading light and 2 power points. There's a curtain for privacy, but the best part was the bed itself...very comfortable, with quality linen. The shared bathroom was spacious, with plenty of mirror and counter space, excellent water pressure and good quality soap & shampoo. The room, toilet and common space were kept clean and orderly. For those who like outdoor space, there are several areas to hang out and socialize with other guests.
For a single female traveler, safety is always a concern. At check in, I received a proximity sensor wrist band, which is used to unlock your room, so only the other guests staying in that room has access.
As for Tiong Bahru, its a great neighborhood, a combination of old and new. There's plenty of food options including Tiong Bahru Market (with Michelin Star hawkers), Coo's own restaurant attached to the hostel and many other hip and trendy cafes.
The MRT (Singapore subway) is less than 10 min walk away, bus stop across the street from Coo, and taxis are easy to flag down in front of Coo.
The breakfast is really good, with a sumptuous spread of Western and Asian fare. During my stay, I got to sample dried mee siam and fried rice, in addition to the usual continental spread of bread, croissant, tuna puff and fruits.
Coo is no standard hostel. They have managed to elevate the hostel experience and well worth the price.

Great location, comfortable bed and clean toilets. Zaly were very helpful during my stay and exceeded my expectations from your hostel. The housekeeper ensure all toilets are clean and dry and make up bed professionally. Wonderful boutique hostel that I have stayed in Singapore and public bus access to Chinatown and Clarke Quay MRT and walking distance to famoud Tiong Bahru Market for all the local food. Will be back again!

I stayed in a co-ed 8 people room with no ensuite bathroom. I loved Thads for various reasons. There is room for improvement, however.
Location. The location is central and the bus is just across the street. There are various options for food-- Tiong Bahru market has great eats. Under Thad's hostel is a cool bar and it does get loud on the weekends. It wasn't a problem for me. The area is in an older part of Singapore, but I felt safe.
Hostel amenities. All basic necessities are there, but you get a new towel only every other day. I love the in-bunk storage. I'd just unpack and put everything in there and that made life very convenient. Their water refilling station is awesome. There is basic breakfast every morning, but there is so much food in the neighborhood (talking about $2-3 per plate and $1 fresh sugar cane juice), I'd rather eat at the hawkers nearby. There are 2 bathrooms with a rainfall shower and 2 sinks. Washer and dryer available for $4 each use. Most people used the washer and dried their clothes on a small dry rack across the lounge area.
Comfort. The sheets and bedding were hotel quality and I was really comfortable. The bed is on the harder side, but I prefer a harder bed in general. The AC was super strong and it feels amazing during the hot day, but I'd wake up with sniffles in the morning.
My 2 biggest complaint: TOWELS AND VENTILATION. The towel rack/luggage rack in the room reeked because of the poor ventilation. The towels never dried while in the rooms. My bed was right next to the towel rack and the mildew smell permeated in my space. I brought it to front desk's attention and asked for another bed. I was told they would open the doors to the rooms and let the rooms air out between 11-3. I was thinking it meant towels would air out for 4 hours. That wasn't the case-- housekeeping opens the room only while cleaning and then it gets closed when they are done. By the next day, it still stank. On the 2nd night I used perfume in my bunk to mask the smell. 8 mildew/wet towels in a small space, just imagine. It also didn't help when one of the girls there onky did her laundry once during her 5 week stay in Singapore. So her stuff smelled bad. I was 1 foot from all the smelliness. Finally, the problem was resolved when a bunch of people checked out on the 3rd day of my stay.

There are the 2 female Malay receptionists cannot listen and cannot smile.. Hotel rule is to open the door and switch the aircon 11AM until 2 PM.. And they didn’t come back at all.I slept without aircon. Next day they turned it on until i had cough. And they never informed guests have to exchange the towel at the lobby. Everyone who stayed a night they left the towel. After they left nobody collect it. ability is so poor.. Never do sth you pleased. If you need anything they’ll not help and give their stupid fu..ed up face all the time..

Great hostel! Clean rooms and bathrooms, modern decor, good continental breakfast, friendly staff, air con, two universal sockets for each bed, reading light, personal locker and curtain around bed space. 6 Bed Dorm small but bed spaces are so good you are hardly aware of the other guests. Chill music playing in restaurant area, quiet in rooms. Luggage storage available, 25 min taxi from airport. Would definitely stay here again!

Located in Tiong Bahru area, the local boutique hostel is just 3 stops away from Tiong Bahru MRT that enables you to explore this local neighbourhood at your own pace. This newly opened design hostel also has such nice interior and interior design that looks modern and hip. Totally instagrammable! I was exploring Singapore last long weekend, and indeed I only had 3 days to find new things in the city. So I would love to stay in the city center and try something new.
This is my first hostel experience, therefore I had a lot of questions in my mind. Well, apparently, COO exceeds my expectation! Aside from its affordable price, staying at COO is so convenient and simple. The room and the bathroom is clean. The lobby is well designed, and they also serves breakfast. Upon checking in, they will give you a band along with your towel and little pamphlet to help you around. This band/bracelet is used as a key access to the hostel as well as to your room. My room is a mixed dorm with 6 beds. Inside the room, you’ll get a bed space for you as well as your personal locker with all of your belongings, led lamp, as well as comfortable linen and pillow. If you bring a suitcase, you can put it under your bed.
A great thing is that the room has an attached bathroom with separate toilet/shower, which I love, because I don’t really like roaming around in the corridor late at night just to go to the bathroom. They also provide you with soap and shampoo, and dental kit upon request, as well as hair dyer on the wash basin. Their rain shower is also equipped with warm water. Overall, I am satisfied with my stay.

This review is for Coo Bistro, run by the same team who operates Coo Boutique Hostel. The Bistro is located beside the Hostel.
Its not too often you get to try a dish that is totally new (to me anyway), inventive, and delicious. But that's what I experience when I tried the Coo Mentaiko Capellini...marinated roe, nori and bacon cream with angel hair pasta...perfect combination.
The Pull Pork Burger is perfectly balance, spicy, savoury and sweet. The accomanying fries are crispy outside, fluffy in the middle, without being greasy.
Our appetizer, Tiger Prawn Casserole was a generour portion of prawns & chorizo in a tomato stew was a great way to start the meal.
We ended our meal with the Grilled Burnt Banana. I was tempted to order another portion (after all, its fruit) but common sense prevailed. I'll definitely have it again at our next visit.
Note for chocolate lovers: order the Valrhona Chocolate...its an sophisticated version of a chocolate milkshake, taken to the next level...rich and decadent.

Currently staying at the premises for the rest this week. After returning to the dorm after 9pm, I noticed that the room was quite warm. However, I saw that the air conditioner was switched off and 2 fans were on instead, so I thought that there must have been a restriction on the air con use (I had arrived after 10pm the previous nights).
When 10:30pm hit and the room hadn't cooled, I figured something was up so I headed to reception. I asked if there was a problem with unit in the female ensuite dorm. Receptionist confirmed that. I asked why there wasn't a notice placed in the room to inform guests, to which he said there was and then believed that I was telling him the truth. His solution was that the earliest someone could come was the Monday, I'd have no air con for 2 nights. This was not good.
Once I returned to the dorm, I was met by 4 other guests. One informed me that it hadn't been working since 11:30am (I had left at 7am for work), it was now after 11pm at night. She had also gone in the morning to discuss it with reception. The hostel had 12 hours by this point to have done something. So, with that we all proceeded back to reception.
Reception did their best to try and get someone. He couldn't get a hold of their serviceman nor his own boss. Eventua!ly he got through. The boss suggested we all split into mixed dorms as it was IMPOSSIBLE to get a 24/7 repairman (not true). This was not what we had paid for. Luckily, they managed to get a worker to come by 1:11am.
The serviceman managed to get some cool air by 3:30am. This was not the end though. When I awoke at 6am to head to work, the air conditioner broke down, again. Who knows if it will be fu!ly operational later.
There are also issues with the flush on the toilet and the wristband access key. Locked out so many times.
Back in 2016 this place was really nice. Sad to see it deteriorate.

Dearest Boabin, Thank you for taking time to write us a review. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused as we tried to get the aircon fixed over the day. However it was a Sunday and some of the shops which we had needed the parts were closed. Also being Sunday, our usual repair contractor is not available and we had spent nearly the entire day looking for an available one. We hope that you understand that it is not that we did not do anything but ta lot of effort was put in throughout the process. For example, our staff had worked from 7am to almost 4am trying to resolve this issue. Hence with this understanding, we had offered affected guests either a room change or a refund of the affected nights. However we are not able to accede to your request of a FULL refund as you have already stayed with us for quite many days before this incident happen. We hope you can be fair to us and not take advantage of the situation. The wristband was also working fine too as we had demonstrated to you each time you approached us saying it is not working.

I stayed at the COO Boutique Hostel for 4 nights in a six bed female dorm. I have stayed in my far share of hostels and can say without question this is equally amongst the best I have experienced. The COO is situated 10 mins from Outram MRT station and around the corner from Tiuong Bahru which makes it perfect for public transport and having good restaurants close by.
The staff at COO were a massive stand out as they were always incredibly friendly and helpful. They helped me organised a well priced SIM for my phone as soon as I arrived which was cheaper then anything offered at the airport, show all guests to their rooms to explain how things work and were always welcoming upon entering the hostel with a friendly hello.
The 6 bed dorm I stayed in was excellent. The beds were very comfortable, shower and toliet very clean and areas allocated for each guests baggage and towels. Each bed space had a comparment included in which you can store valuables and lock with a pin like a safe and there is great aircon. They really do think of everything.
I was also really pleased with the good breakfast on offer each morning which included basic cereal, toast and jam, mini crossiants or pancakes, juice and tea or coffee.
Finally the wifi connection was also excellent and i was always greatful for the free chilled water on level 2 to fill up my water bottles given the hot humid weather.
Would not hesitate to recommend COO Boutique in a heartbeat!
