I stayed at Hotel Naguilan for a conference nearby. The main building is beautifully restored, with original art on display.

The staff are very responsive to guest needs, and the service is outstanding.

The location on the waterfront is wonderful, and very quiet at night.

The hotel rooms are exceptionally clean, and the furnishings are modern, although not new. But there is no decoration at all in the rooms, making them appear without life. At least a print, like a photograph of Valdivia or surrounding landscape would do wonders to make the rooms feel more welcoming.

Another oddity: the doors to the bathrooms in the main building were always propped open.

This is a superb hotel, curiously placed within a gritty neighborhood. It truly is like an oasis along the river. The building, the property, the rooms are all focused on the river, and one can easily forget the surrounding neighborhood on the other side once you enter the property.

The fusion restaurant is superb, for both dinner and a very nice continental breakfast.

Some guidebooks say that it is only a brisk 20m walk to the center of town. Likely true, but it is not a very pleasant walk. Would strongly encourage having a car or planning on a taxi.

On the other hand, just spending a day or two by the riverside would be wonderful too!

I recently stayed at this hotel with my family. It is old and tired. Rooms need an urgent refurbishment. Service was very poor. Breakfast was also not worth the effort. The only redeeming feature is that it is located on the banks of the Valdivia river. A word of warning however is that there are no railings or safety barriers from the river deck, so if you have small children you need to be very vigilant.

I wanted to love this hotel, I really did. The location is beautiful on the river. I have mixed feelings, but overall, I would definitely not recommend this hotel.

The Good:
1- The location is beautiful. If you want to be in the center of town, this place is not for you. I liked being outside of the hustle and bustle.

2- When there was extensive mold damage in our original room, we were immediately upgraded to a nicer room (we paid for a standard room).

3- Brunch was great. The staff was friendly and the food was fresh and delicious.

The Bad:
1- We should have never been placed in a room with mold like that. It was something I've never seen before even in a cheap hostel.

2- The hotel is in desperate need of renovations. It is old and not particularly well kept. The standard rooms in the old wing are just awful. They are not worth the price. The superior rooms with terraces are nicer, but still in desperate need of updates. Everything is very, very old.

3- The hotel is just not a good value based on its condition.

4- The pool, oh the pool. The weather was great and we were so excited to take an afternoon swim. We we arrived at the pool, it was absolutely filthy. We skimmed the pool ourselves in an attempt to make it a little cleaner. The filter was not on and we asked a hotel staff member if they could turn the filter on given the fool was absolutely filthy. He said no, the filter is only turned on in the morning and night. I don't quite understand this since this renders the pool dirty during the day.

5- If you want to use the wireless, this will be a problem. It was very spotty and rarely worked. This was not a huge problem for us because we didn't really need the Internet. If you do, be aware, it does not work very well or very often.

I desperately wanted to like this hotel. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointed. Stay elsewhere when you visit Valdivia.

Just stayed for 2 nights in this hotel as I came down to Valdivia to run a trail running race (Torrencial Valdivia). Both nights the hot shower didn't work. In a hotel with a rate north of $100/night this is totally unacceptable. When checking out I asked for an answer from management (apologies, excuse, etc) but they just said that this was happening often and didn't know why (??). Never staying here again.

If you’re looking for a nice venue for a small wedding on a warm sunny day, this is a great waterside one. But if you’re staying in Valdivia, this hotel is a bit too far out and is in need of renovation. Bedrooms are mostly, if not all, in separate blocks. Ours faced the water but had additional windows to gather the street noise. The main windows fitted very badly and as it was a cold and stormy night the room was very draughty. There was no heating until after 6:30pm and it was off again three hours later, apparently the same timing on cold days as on hot ones. Furniture was functional rather than comfortable but with water stains from decades of use. The furniture in the lobby lounge was similarly faded. At least our bed was comfortable and the place was clean. Elsewhere, the signs of neglect were plentiful. A cracked glass block wall with a hole in and broken paving at the hotel entrance for example. The money has clearly gone on the new waterside decking to the detriment of the rest of the hotel.
We did have two good dinners in the quiet restaurant (there aren’t any decent restaurants in the vicinity) but the breakfast equalled the worst we have had in Chile. Staff were pleasant.
I don’t know how Nagulian has reached a high ‘value for money’ ranking and I would not book there again.

The hotel is a bit out of town but that's OK. The setting is nice and the staff seems quite friendly. The downside are the rooms. Very stark and nothing special. Beds and pillows not too comfortable. The hotel seems loud when in the dining area or lobby. Any walking around upstairs is greatly amplified. The nice looking Jacuzzi by the pool - ice cold. All OK for a night.

Hotel Naguilan felt like something from an old movie. It has quite an old-fashioned feel to it, from the design and furniture in the room to the lobby and dining room. It's not new, but it was well-built, and everything worked well. There was no air-conditioning in the room (I don't think you need it in Valdivia), but there was central heating, which made the room very cozy, even too warm for my husband. It was around 12-18 degrees C while were there, so I really appreciated the warmth :-)

We stayed in the building across from the building with reception and the dining room, on the ground floor overlooking the river. It was super peaceful, and it was great to be able to watch the birds in the bushes across the river from our porch. The only complaint I'd have is that there was no secure way to leave the balcony door open at night.

Everyone was polite enough to us, both at reception and at the restaurant where we had our welcome drinks. The food was a bit hit and miss, but we only ate there once, I think. Breakfast was fair, with a limited selection of items, and the bread was stale every day - it seems to be a thing in Chile. The scrambled eggs were excellent, though, and overall it was just fine.

It's quite far from town, maybe a half hour walk, but you can also take the local bus for not much money at all. We stayed there because it was close to the university campus where my husband was attending a conference. There aren't many, or any, restaurants close by, but plenty of excellent options in town.

here are my thoughts on my stay at this hotel:

Tiny, tiny bed...
small room
old carpet
bait and switch price ( we did use booking dot com, so perhaps some shared blame)
nice service in the restaurant
no heating on a cool night
old worn bathroom fittings
good shower pressure
stale bread at breakfast
cracked sink in the bathroom by the restaurant

great view to the river, nice location.

We didn't know what to expect from this hotel but we were not disappointed. Lovely front desk staff. Helped us to change from a kingsize to twin bedded room with no bother. The riverside deck is an absolute joy to sit and relax, watching the occasional tour boat go by. Taxi ride to the fish market only costs a couple of pounds but the market is a must! Enormous sea lions! A great place to stop. Special congratulations to Oscar (bar keeper) who worked furiously to keep everyone happy.
