Although Pululauhua is close to Quito, it's like being in a different world. We had booked a 3-night package, and Renato (our host) picked us up at our Quito hotel for the drive to the crater (with a stop at Mitad del Mundo along the way). He gave us the choice to drive with him the entire way, or hike...

Time alone to think, write, walk, and ride horses, all my favorite activities. A woman traveling alone in Ecuador...many think I am out of my mind, but secretly may, wish they were doing the same. I am on a sojourn of sorts and how I ended up in Pululahua Crater has much to do with the draw of horses, the...

When we first looked out over the crater from the lookout we weren't too impressed. But we then hiked down into the crater and it's like entering another world. It's peaceful and quiet. We stayed in the room with a wood stove. We didn't really need the stove for warmth but it was nice to have. The best thing about...

My husband and I booked a full day’s birding with Renato. He picked us up at our hotel in Quito at 6 am with coffee and sandwiches and we set out for our first stop which was Antisana National Park. Our main goal here was Andean Condor and Renato maneuvered us in the perfect spot to watch an adult male...

Being in the Pululahua crater is the way to escape to a quiet place where you can experience nature. While you are here you can do some climbing (El Chivo beckons), ride horses or walk about. You can get here the hard way: get dropped at the viewpoint and hike down for an hour or you can get the hostal...

Spent 3 days, 2 nights here. A beautiful, peaceful setting close to Quito. The owner, Renato, speaks flawless English and was a great source of information on birds, Ecuadorian society, and Pululahua Park. Took Renato's tour to Mindo. Don't miss the cable car across the canyon, chocolate factory, and butterfly museum! Lot's of great hiking in the crater.

We booked the 2 night/3 day lodging package, and the hosts arranged for us to be picked up from the airport. The staff are very friendly, and it's a low-key place to connect with nature. We were looking forward to biking around the crater, and the website said we could rent their bikes for half-day trips. When we got there,...

I was lucky enough to have been able to return to this amazing place. The hostel is located within a Geobotanical Reserve, an amazing natural environment where I stayed for four days and throughly enjoyed myself. I hiked one of the lava domes, the Pondona. Last year I did another one called, El Chivo. Additonally, I did a nature walk...

Inside the crater looking out, the scenery is very cool. Renato is also an excellent bird guide. We took his tour to Antisana Volcano which was cheaper than the day tour operators in Quito and ended up with a personal bird guide, too! The lodge is very comfortable, well sealed and modern, and includes a fireplace should you get cold...

Stayed for one night in this place for some R&R and absolutely loved it. We read in the hammocks overlooking the fields, had great food in the restaurant area, walked a bit on the trails nearby (they have maps with loads of information of everything you can do), and chilled out in the jacuzzi on site. Rooms are spacious, the...
