Charming Boutique Hotel in Managua. The rooms remodeled colonial house with a beautiful tropical garden and swimming pool. It counts with a total of nine private rooms, all with private bathrooms, water heated with solar energy, air conditioning, TV with cable, wireless internet, working desks, alarm clocks, telephones, security boxes, etc. Some of them have their own private balcony that opens to the garden and/or swimming pool. The hotel: An Oasis in the city. Our location is ideally for everybody: We are steps away from the city but not in the city! So if you have business downtown, it is a 10 min drive. But if you want to enjoy nature, have a tranquil time to relax and be pampered, Villa Maya is the perfect place. We are close to national attractions (Volcan Masaya, 10 min drive, Granada, 30 min drive) and local malls, shops and the best restaurants (Galerias Santo Domingo) in Managua just 5 min away. The owners: We are a mature couple with over 30 years together. Vilma is an artist from Guatemala and Luis is a lawyer from Nicaragua. Both met and studied at UC Berkeley in the Bay Area in California. Our goal is to provide a boutique hotel option for Managua giving a personalized service to all of our guests while ensuring that our operations are respectful with the environment.*Breakfast a la carte

OVERVIEW:
Hotel Maya Boutique is a beautiful colonial mansion converted into a hotel. It is a gated compound with a 24-hour armed security. Surrounded by neatly manicured foliage of vegetation, the hotel is surprisingly very well maintained, giving it a homely feeling. If you choose to get away from larger hotels in Managua for a change, this hotel is a perfect option while exploring all the travel opportunities that Managua and its surrounding areas has to offer.

TRAVEL DATES:
May-2011

LOCATION:
Located in a quiet residential neighborhood of Los Colinas, on the outskirts of Managua. Considering heavy traffic, it is approximately 30 minutes away from Managua Airport (MGA).

POSITIVE NOTES:
Secluded; Low key; Super friendly staff; Quiet neighborhood; Great hot breakfast; Clean and very well maintained premises.

Although this hotel offers basic amenities compare to larger chain hotels, the staff are genuinely devoted to their guest. They emulate the traditional Nicaraguan hospitality. We would definitely stay at this hotel again. It was truly a humbling and pleasant experience.

NEGATIVE NOTES:
During our stay, the pool was somewhat dirty.

AMENITIES:
Free hot breakfast; Private bathrooms; Business center; 24-hour armed security; Swimming pool

NIGHTLY RATE:
$90+ a night (taxes included)

DISCOUNT ACCEPTED:
None. Not even if you are charming and brutally handsome. Nada!

This place feels very homey, but like a much nicer, less cluttered, more tropical home than I'm accustomed to.

The pool is wonderful; my kids almost never got out of it.

The grounds are very pretty, with tropical flowers and well-manicured landscape.

The location was perfect for us, because it is right on the outskirts of Managua, but unlike other places we considered staying, still actually very near the center of Managua, a really short ride from restaurants, nightclubs and activities for the whole family, like the very modern mall with a theater.

The neighborhood this hotel is in is one of the more luxurious of Managua, much safer and attractive than most places in Nicaragua.

We are actually really into being ecologically conscious, so the fact that there is solar heating and other ways this hotel works to reduce their carbon footprint is actually important to us.

The owners were very welcoming folks and we definitely plan to see them again whenever we go back to Nicaragua.

Thanks so much for making us feel at home, Vilma and Luis!

Great location, Great atmosphere that makes you feel that you are very far away from the city. Great customer service and very cozy, warm and extremely well decorated. I had a better time than in other more expensive hotels around the world.

nice place with pool and beautiful garden.
but: awful expensive taxi service. they only call their own cab driver and tell you, that you dont have to pay hiim. but later on your bill it will appear. we payed 40 dollars for a airport pick up.
3 times more than the normal price. for all driving around in 1 day we payed 130 $ !!!
very bad attitude.
Also no food, although it tells this.
I can't recommend this place.
or: when you go there, please don't use there taxi service. !!

We had an unhappy experience here. We had reserved a specific room, the only one with a bath tub(which I needed for medical reasons), four months in advance. When we arrived, we were required to pay in advance for all nights we would be there, and before we saw our room. When we saw it, we immediately said, This is the wrong room. The night clerk said he did not know anything. It was late at night, so we figured we would just straighten it out in the morning. but in the morning, it turned out the room we had reserved had been given to other travelers. The room we were in was $40 less a night, according to Booking.com. We asked for a refund of the difference. After a long argument, the hotel agreed to the refund, but said it would take two weeks to process. Then, as we were leaving, they called our cab to the airport to say they were not going to give us the refund! And they never did. We had to appeal to Booking.com, who did get us our money back. The hotel does have pretty gardens, but the gardens did not make up for the unpleasantness.

Small rooms, and be careful with the one downstairs and for one person, it does not have view, and has the problem that faces a hall where other guests stay late night, which would not let you sleep.
Not really close to restaurants or places, you will need ground transportation to get around.

The grounds are nice and appear well gated/fenced for security. I did not swim in the pool, but it appeared to be clean with nice patio furniture all around. The room was very nice for the price. (I booked at approx $60 including tax. But see below)
If you are just planning to tour Managua, it's probably not a bad place to stay and could be fun with a group. But I was solo, so I called it an early night since I had an early taxi the next morning.
The A/C did blow cold air, and everything seemed to be working in the room including wifi, with the exception of #6 below.

That said, here are the negatives:
1) The gentleman at the front spoke broken English and did not charge me what I expected. I booked through Kayak.com, and was expecting about $10 cheaper. No biggie in the big scheme of things. So after debating with him a little, I dropped it because I live a blessed life and things don't always go according to plans.
He also had me "staying 3 days", which was not correct. I showed him my email reservation and he continued to question as to why the hotel manager wrote him a note for 3 days? Um... that's not really my problem. And told him that I wasn't sure what to say. But I booked for only one day and showed him proof, which satisfied him. But, it still seemed like he was frustrated with me, which is not the way to handle things in the service/hospitality industry... even in Nica.
2) Kayak.com showed this hotel as having free taxi to the airport. It does NOT. It was $20 and a long ride. (30-40 mins?)
3) There was a dog barking all night long nextdoor. Probably outside of the immediate control of the hotel, but the management needs to say something (or bribe the neighbors... etc.) It woke me up approx 5 times during my one-night stay.
4) The restaurant was run by the gentleman at the front. It was a disorganized scenario. It was a little bizarre. That said, the food was decent (there was one cook onsite) and there is a full-bar. But you sort of have to serve yourself and keep track of what you drink. The manager onsite questioned me a few times about the quantity. I drank exactly what I paid for, so that was a little annoying. But again, not the end of the world.
5) The taxi that took me to the hotel had to wait for nearly 5 mins to find someone to open the gate so that we could enter the hotel grounds when we first arrived. It was a little strange.
6) The hot water was not hot. I took a luke-warm shower early in the morning before leaving to the airport via $20 taxi ride.

Since I mostly just stop-over at these hotels on my way to surf trips, I will probably just book a hotel that is actually *close to* the airport next time and simply pay a little more money. I've had good luck with Best Western and El Camino Real across from the aiport in the past.

We were in Managua last July to visit family in the Las Colinas neighborhood. The hotel was convenient to our family. The hotel is homey, elegant, clean and beautiful. The staff is helpful and pleasant. The gardens are gorgeous. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty. The room was comfortable and attractive. We felt safe and secure at all times. We were disappointed that the pool was not functional while we were there. it was being repaired and serviced. We were there with an eight year old boy who tired quickly of the family errands and chores and he would have been so much happier to have come home at the end of the day to the pool. While good restaurants were plentiful near by, none were within walking distance. Other meals are available upon request at the hotel, but are not as good as the breakfast. That said we loved the hotel and the hospitality of the staff and proprietor (who helped us sort out some legal issues). We will return for sure.

I had an 8 night stay in a room with a double bed on the first floor. The two young women running the hotel did a really great job making sure I was comfortable during my stay.

The hotel is just a few turns off the main road, and is in a great location if you plan on taking a drive to Masaya or Granda. It was just down the road from the Galerias Mall and many restaurants. It is located in a pretty quiet and safe neighborhood and is gated for extra safety.

The breakfast every morning was great. The room was very clean and comfortable. I was little worried that the room would be hot with the high temperature in Managua, but the air conditioner was very powerful and kept the room cold and was very quiet. I would highly suggest the hotel for business, solo travelers, and couples. There are only 8 rooms and the hotel is very quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. When I didn't feel like eating at the hotel or going out they were able to order fast food to my room! The WIFI was surprisingly fast for Managua.

The only minor problems that I had:
- The hot water one day was not working, but was fixed by the end of the day. For some reason the water was usually only hot mid-day, even though there was only one other room occupied.
- Coming in and out of the hotel you need to have the gate opened. The only time this becomes a real problem is if you plan on returning very late at night.

I've stayed at the Barcelo Managua and it is not even close to how great this hotel is. In my opinion it is by far one of the best values you can get in Managua. I hope that the hotel owner checks this review because the young ladies running the hotel are doing a fantastic job. They are very friendly and went above and beyond! They even got up at 4am to fix me a breakfast to take to the airport on my last day. I'd also like to find out the syrup they use on the pancakes because it has to be one of the most delicious I've ever tasted!

This beautiful little hotel is set in quiet grounds and has a peaceful pool and terrace. We stayed for a days r&r before an early flight home. The place itself was lovely and the rooms good value however the stay ended up being terrible value because of the hugely overpriced extras - a quesadilla lunch cost 3 times what we'd paid elsewhere and was low quality. The hotel insisted that we used its "taxi services", to the extent that the restaurant we ate at refused to order us a normal taxi but insisted on phoning back the driver from the hotel despite us previously letting the driver know we didnt wish to use him again.

With the exception of the room on the back deck, the upstairs rooms are close together. Our room had two queen beds and was quite spacious. There was another room directly across from ours, as well as one next to us. Loved the hotel, and the staff was great. Hope this helps.
