Crowne plaza is one of Managua’s finest traditional hotels, built before the 1972 earthquake and because of its pyramidal design it survived that quake which devastated the central part of this city. The front desk staff and restaurant service people are wonderful, attentive and friendly. The ladies at the front desk are charming, speak English and the afternoon and evening waiter, Marco, is especially helpful and attentive to guests in the restaurant and pool area. speaking of the restaurant, you can eat in the dining room, on the spacious outdoor deck or poolside. The pool is one of the longest outdoor pools in Managua and well maintained. The restaurant food is excellent and cleaning protocols are in place. The hotel rooms are comfortable, clean and feature excellent beds and pillows. The modern flat-screen television features English CNN, Fox and BBC and rooms have a frig and coffee maker, although the room coffee is awful. The only room feature that I found inadequate are the bathrooms which are so small that you have to close the door so you can sit on the toilet! There’s barely enough room to dry your legs after a shower and a ceiling only about 6.5 feet…maybe 2 meters…tall. I stayed in a regular room and a large sixth floor suite which featured an excellent north-facing view of Lake Managua. The other hotel feature I found lacking was the very sketchy internet which connects and disconnects minute by minute whether you are in your room, the lobby or restaurant. Hotel security consists of hotel personnel who mostly sit and watch the front door, uniformed green-clad security guys who are much more active and in the evening police in blue uniforms. There’s really not much to fear in Nicaragua as long as you are NOT here to protest the socialist government which recently celebrated 42 years since the July 19, 1979 revolution. The people of Nicaragua are mostly friendly towards American tourists and your only dealing with this government and its suspicious officials will likely be at the airport upon arrival when you pay the $10 entrance fee and answer questions about your intended addresses and length of stay. Finally, I stayed at another hotel near the airport on this trip and noticed that Americans are slowly beginning to return to Nicaragua. Despite COVID and low Central American vaccine rates, I noticed a group of teens who were here to teach English in the mountainous region and soon I expect the church and missionary groups will return also, staying in Managua upon entering the country and just before leaving it. For now, USA tourism remains low and I suspect it’s because of COVID and our mainstream news media which often puts Nicaragua in the same category and sentences with Cuba and Venezuela which is really not valid. Like most Central American countries and even some South American ones, a more nuanced viewpoint cannot be obtained from watching the news reports in the USA. This is my 12th visit to Nicaragua since 2007 and I have never felt insecure or fearful while visiting the city or rural areas.

Here's a quick list: horribly slow wifi in the hotel. Front desk could not make proper change. Room was cramped and only two small desk lamps, no overhead lights. AC turned off in lobby bar. When I asked to speak with the general manager, the front desk said they had no GM, he left the country months ago. Need I go on?

Avoid this hotel. The Wi-Fi here was horrific; 3MB down and 1MB up. As a business owner who needs to work on my trips like many others, this is totally unacceptable. Eventually they provided us with Wi-Fi in the lobby bar that was 14/14 but the lobby bar didn't have air conditioning and it must have been 80 to 90° in there with the lights off and dark. Our room was very basic and there was warm water but no hot water in the shower didn't drain. When we asked to speak to a manager in charge we were told there is no manager at this location and that he had left months ago. The person at the front desk provided no additional information. There was only a handful of people staying at the hotel and now we understand why. We will never go to this or any other Crowne plaza hotel and we have traveled to over 100 countries.

IHG has several hotels in Managua. This is my favorite. A shopping mall next to the hotel with food courts and super market. Great location. The room is big and great lake view from higher floor. Though there is no club lounge here. The breakfast is simple but good enough.

The hotel is very well located, short run to the airport and near the centre. Rooms are quite comfortable, in room ironing board, free wi-fi and tea/coffe. Staff was very accommodating and pleasant. Restaurant well equiped with excellent buffet for breakfast and dinner (but you can also get a la cart)
