Stayed in the one-bedroom suite--and it was fantastic! The room has a very cute (though small) balcony that faced Plaza Herrera. The noise can get loud in the evenings, but the room has super thick curtains that block out most of the noise. Also, the music seems to end around midnight. Overall, this is one of the top hotels in Panama City, located in the historic area of Casco Viejo. The history of the hotel (and the area) is fascinating, so we went on a walking tour to more about the area. The hotel was the first "skyscraper" in Panama City" and originally housed a department sore on the main level and apratments on the upper floors. The architecture is simply gorgeous, both inside and out. The service is A++. Overall, a great hotel--well worth the cost.
This hotel is a great place to start a trip to Panama. The colonial-style hotel with a nice atmosphere is in a great location in the old city. My room was spacious and had great view of the Pacific Ocean. Most importantly, the staff were great, especially the receptionists. The were helpful with any questions I had. In addition, I had a mix-up with my tour operator for a half-day tour, who failed to show. The receptionist helped me reach the operator and book another tour in short notice.
We stayed here for three nights on a stopover trip to Panama City. It's a wonderful hotel with a great location to explore the old town area. You can walk around the area to sight see and to find restaurants and shops.
This hotel was booked as part of a tour via Audley Travel covering Panama and Costa Rica. Our first 3 nights were spent at this hotel in Central Casco Viejo the old city of Panama. We used it as a base to discover the area and we had two and a half days to use the time. The hotel is a late 1800’s building which has been the home of RCA Records, various trade organizations and a hotel. We found the rooms spacious, typically South American furnished with large hard wood furniture in good condition, large shower rooms with excellent facilities and very tidy decoration. We stayed in 203 which was a second floor room overlooking the main square. Despite this being quite vibrant at night we had no noise intrusion from the square itself, no intrusion from either adjoining rooms or the common areas of the hotel. the hotel has a large library on the second floor with some extraordinary books in it, a wonderful place to while away some spare time. The hotel has a roof top pool which tends to be out of the sun quite a lot and a small terrace and has good reception areas where people tend to congregate for a coffee and general hanging around. The restaurant has a reasonable light menu at comparatively good prices, its a pleasant dining experience at lunch off dinner and that staff are competent, extremely pleasant . The hotel itself is well cared from given its age, it is considered luxury although I would not say it was particularly luxurious, but its a very competent place, with what we found were great staff, friendly, helpful and it provided us a real home from home for the three days we were there. Check out is 12.00 which is good by European standards and on the right day its a half hour from the airport, 20 minutes from the Panama Canal attraction via taxi and about 15 minutes cab ride from the new city once you get tired of wandering its narrow streets. I would recommend it. There are two other newer options which we did not visit and which have only opened in 2023 which are probably more expensive than the American Trade Hotel but given that we used it as a base I’m not sure it would be worth upgrading or looking for anything better for our purposes. generally very happy with the service here.…
Great hotel in a part of the old town. The room we stayed in had a great view of the Pacific. Great places in the area to dine. Personnel in the lobby is very friendly and will help you with anything requested. My wife is disabled and they went out of their way to be of help
I spent three nights before catching a cruise out of Panama in the hotel and enjoyed every bit of my time. The hotel was totally rebuilt out of an old original building and is visually stunning. The room was spacious, but the furniture was not comfortable for my liking and the bed was OK but way harder than I like. Everything was clean. There was a small pool and sun area on my floor and it would have been better with a drink from the bar but it was never open. The front desk was very helpful, and they had a full breakfast with the room in the on-site restaurant. I only found the hotel bar open one time but all that did not matter because I was in the middle of Old Town Panama and bars and restaurants are every third door. I enjoyed my stay and plan to go to Panama again.
My husband and I loved staying at American Trade Hotel, friendy stuff and exxcelent location for a history and cultural lover. Clean rooms! I missed the silence in the room at bedtime but perhaps requesting a room further from the street could have been solved. But I wasn't bothered by the noise either.
The balcony overlooking the square was an unexpected bonus, the small pool was welcome (if rather dirty), but almost everything else a big disappointment. The only information available was a menu - with nothing about hours. In fact the downstairs areas were often devoid of customers and staff. No coffee shop, no evening restaurant, no mention there would be a New Year’s Eve event, nothing about checkout times etc. The television had a brief advert for the hotel but no programs had been loaded or seemed loadable. Breakfast was dismal. Orders would be brought in the wrong order or not at all. The coffee was amongst the worst we have ever tasted. The orange juice was out of a plastic carton Do not pay for breakfast; go elsewhere. Such a sad experience in this lovely building.
A beautiful hotel that has been gorgeously and meticulously renovated. The location is excellent and the staff is very kind. The rooms and bathrooms are generous and comfortable and the lobby and gym are perfect. But there are several important issues. First of all, the noise is horrendous and doesn't matter which side your room faces. If you face the square, there will be pounding music from the ice-cream-store-that-wants-to-be-a-nightclub and if you face the street, you will be staring right at a church bell that starts ringing every fifteen minutes beginning at 6:00 am. It's horrendous. The other issue is the sporadic availability of hot water. The staff seemed unsurprised when we alerted them which indicates to me that this is a systemic problem.
This interesting/historical hotel is situated in an incredible location (middle of casca viejo) but does NOT live up to its potential! Rooms are very dated and badly in need of a refresh. We ran out of hot water daily at shower time. The church bells out our window start at 7am and never seem to stop!! The rooftop pool has missing tiles and torn furniture. Sheets and towels are subpar. And while the small staff is incredibly nice and very Knowledgeable - there are not enough of them! Much better option within the old city…
