Honestly i am overwhelmed after coming back from Myanmar. The country has probably the cheapest hotels which are over the top clean and have very good facilities.

Same for this hotel. The location is alright . The hotel has a roof top restaurant with moderately priced menu. If you do not want to dine there you can always take a tuk tuk to the Chinese Night Market for food which is quite cheap. There is a small convenience stone nearby but nothing fancy.

Coming back to the hotel. The staff is really nice perhaps the most friendly hotel staff among all the hotels I have stayed in Myanmar.

The rooms are big. They have all modern facility . My room had a balcony which you can enjoy in the evening with a couple of drinks. The balcony is shared with another room. I had taken the club room , I suggest you take the club room since it is quite cheaply priced.

The hotel provides free parking and free breakfast. The breakfast is quite big and elaborate considering the room prices. They had noodles, fried rice, pan cake, french toast / pan cake, few fruits , cereals and eggs to order. Only thing come for breakfast early and not during the last 15 minutes of the closing time.

They have a room top balcony where you can enjoy nice view of the Mandalay Palace and enjoy complimentary cocktails which they offer during happy hours sometime.

Overall a very good stay.

I have visited Mandalay many times now and always stay at this hotel, so I figured I would make a new review.

Although the rooms are old, outdated and could use remodeling, they are comfortable and clean. Some rooms, like #405, are quite large and with fast W-Fi, and a strong air conditioner and refrigerator, makes this hotel a good choice for longer stays.

The price is another selling point for me as well: lately, I have been able to find rooms on booking.com for around $20 USD per night, no credit card info necessary.

I never eat breakfast, which is included free of charge, so I can't comment on it, but I do drink tea on the balcony outside of the restaurant in the morning.

I also like the neighborhood which is very quiet at night. The hotel is within walking distance of a few of my favorite restaurants and beer stations.

There is also a very authentic morning market around the corner on 77th street that I often visit. I have never seen a fellow tourist there.

I had the unusual experience of spending part of my stay in Mandalay at the Hotel Yadanarbon (TA rated #3, already reviewed) and the rest at Smart Hotel (TA rated #4). They are incredibly alike in everything including cost, but there are some areas where one is better than the other. I though it might be useful to TA readers if in this review I touch on those differences, sometimes in Smart's favor and sometimes in Yadanarbon's. Depending on your priorities, after reading this, you might lean toward one or the other.

Both hotels are mid-rise, reasonably modern, with great staffs, rooftop restaurants with cultural shows. Bedrooms are quite similar. Both have minibars and provide two bottles of water per day gratis.

The Smart Hotel bath provides shampoo, foam, toothbrush kit, and the hot water is fine (run it a few minutes first at certain times of day). The bathrooms at Yadanarbon are a bit more stylish in design, but toiletries are similar.

Both hotels have in-room safes, but my safe at the Smart wasn't secured to anything. Also doors at the Smart don't automatically lock when you close them; there's a trick to them. If you forget, your room is not locked and the safe inside is portable. Nothing happened, but I give Yadanarbon the edge on security.

I don't watch TV when I'm traveling, TV sets appeared to be about equal, but Yadanarbon's was at normal eye level while Smart's was installed near the ceiling, above the bathroom door.

The nightly cultural shows on the rooftop restaurants were very very similar, with music, puppets, etc. I give a slight nod in favor of Yadanarbon's.

Both hotels have electric outlets that accept US plugs, but Smart Hotel's configuration was much better: plenty of outlets where you might want them, including two between the heads of the twin beds; Yadanarbon's were much less convenient, with no outlet within six feet or more of the head of my bed.

The two hotels are a five minute walk from one another, about three blocks apart. However since the Smart was on 28th and the Yadanarbon was on 31st, the Smart is five minutes closer to the promenade alongside the Royal Palace moat, making for pleasant early morning or sunset strolls.

The breakfast was pleasant at Yadanarbon, with the omelet station particularly nice. My dinner selection was reasonably tasty, though not fine dining. The Smart Hotel's kitchen is a bit challenged. Food was nutritious and safe to eat, but not very well prepared. Omelet and congee were both pedestrian at best. The Smart's mixed fruits and pastries were sufficient for a light breakfast, and fresh honey melon, pineapple, watermelon and mandarin oranges are all cook-proof.

As for the setting of breakfast and happy hour sundowners, the Smart has it all over Yadanarbon. Their roof is one story higher, and twice as close to the royal palace, providing a truly exceptional view of the watchtowers, woods, and Mandalay Hill in the distance.

Service was excellent in both; staff will help you and take care of you in either hotel. Top-notch management and staff wad probably the best part of both these hotels. I would be happy to return to either.

To Vincent M New Orleans,Louisiana Dear Guest, Your review comment at the tripAdvisor, titled " Very good for Mandalay " with 4 Stars, sounds like an Economist 's Research paper, with very frank and useful remarks and advice. Many thanks indeed for taking your time and writing this lovely comparison. As you have stayed at these two hotels, we regard and keep in mind to our competitor hotels as good friends and running side by side in healthy and constructive style. You have very kindly quoted as,....both are mid-rise with great staff,Amennities and Toiletries are also similar, equally good Puppet show, location a bit leaning to Smart, food equally both are OK, service was excellent in both, Top-notch Management in both hotels, then, finally you have mentioned that, " I would be happy to return to either." .....that was absolutely an amazing review comment at tripAdvisor and very useful for, " would be Guests at either hotels,, and I would like to congratulate our competitor, " the other hotel ". May I say, " many thanks again for your support and until your next visit to Smart, then I would like to welcome you again as my VVIP Guest." This hotel has exceeded my expectations. As a budget traveler, they were able to accommodate me with a small room that met my needs and was very comfortable. The room had a fabulous shower, air con, tv, and mini fridge. Wifi, breakfast, and a free cocktail were all included. The breakfast was a fabulous buffet! The manager, Terrence went out of his way to help me in every way he could. He suggested itineraries, arranged transportation, and provided us with great insight! He is a very generous man! I had a driver, Ko Ko Hmu that was fabulous as well. He took me to the local sights: monastery, pagodas, and palace and waited patiently for me to tour them. I would highly recommend him for transport. Overall, it was a fabulous stay in an otherwise hectic city.

This was my first time travelling to Myanmar. I was wanting to site see and be close to a lot of the temples and palaces in Mandalay while still being able to relax and have amenities like restaurants or nightlife close at hand. The Smart hotels location provided all of this. The room was very clean and had a flat screen tv as well as good air con. The manager Terrence and his staff were easy to talk to and friendly. The only negative was the internet service. Sometimes it worked and other times nothing. But this is common I found out through much of the country. Bike rental is located beside the hotel and makes getting around simple.

Travelling back to Mandalay to get our Air Asia flight to Bangkok, we decided to spend the last couple of nights at the Smart Hotel. We hadn't heard of the hotel until a chap passed us a hotel leaflet at the airport when we first arrived in Myanmar. Anyhow, the TA reviews stacked up so we decided to book it and wow, how pleased were we that we did. All the previous reviews are bang on and we agree with what has been said before. We received a lovely welcome from the owner (Terence) and staff when we checked in....lovely cold towel and drink too. We were given lots of info as to where we were and things to do etc.

Our room was very nice, spaceous and clean and we had a good view of the city. The room had everything in it that you would expect from a hotel 3 times the price and the wifi was pretty quick too. Staff were all very friendly and courteous. Breakfasts were lovely with a buffet style choice and eggs made to order.

We drank in the Sky Bar a couple of times and had dinner there too. The food was nice / plentiful and you get a fantastic view from the roof. Service was great too. The Sky Bar feels like a 'sparce / spaceous conservatory' and whilst nice we thought that with a bit more work on it in terms of decor, mood lighting and atmosphere, the 'Sky Bar' had huge (HUGE) potential and could become a 'destination' in its own right for other tourists visiting the city to have a drink or meal (rather than those who are just staying at the hotel). With only 76 restaurants shown on TA in Mandalay, its quite hard for tourists to find decent places and we think that the Sky Bar could / should be up there with the best of them if someone was to put it on TA as its own destination (not sure why this hasn't been done before).

For the money, this has to be the best hotel in Mandalay. it's pretty central and is a short walk to the railway station and about 12 mins walk to the Diamond Plaza with its large supermarket. It was also just a short 7 min walk to the road where you can pick up the Air Asia free bus to the airport. All in all, we were very happy to have chosen the Smart Hotel. Thank you, R & L from Scotland

This is a Soviet-looking oldish hotel. Its breakfas is good and its free bicycle service is excellent, but they just want your dollars, your dollars, your dollars!!! The stardard rooms are as tiny as a matchbox and too expensive for what they offer. Go somewhere else.

We used this hotel as a cheap stopover to get some rest after a long trip. I could not fault the hotel or its staff. It is certainly good value. Central location a few blocks from the Palace. Lovely polite staff, especially the ladies at the desk. Prompt assistance when asked. Laundry service was cheap and efficient. Air-con works and hot water runs. The free Wi-Fi worked fine in the room.
Importantly the power supply was consistent so none of my devices got fried while being charged.
Rooms are on the smaller side but this is a budget hotel.
The big selling point is the roof top resturant with great views over the city and the lunches and dinners were of great quality including Burmese, Indian and Chinese menues. The breakfast buffet is also worth mentioning. Try the home made bread!!!
A great budget option that returns excellent value for money. Highly Recommended.

The hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating. They really attend to your needs. There's a cold towel and welcome drink upon arrival and they explain everything the hotel has to offer... the free cocktails and harp, xylophone and puppet show in the evening. The food isn't that great, but yeah, it's not bad at all.

Location is relatively good I guess. It's pretty much central so it's not difficult to locate, and it's along a main road.

The rooms are clean, bed is comfy, but there's a general eerie feel to the rooms and hotel. It's pretty much an old-looking style hotel, so there might be a need to renovate it. This is just the down side to it for me. You may want to have a companion in the room. I had to leave everything on when I slept. hehe.

Wifi is free here but can be intermittent in the evening. It's pretty fast and signal is strong though if it's working properly. The hotel has a computer near the reception that you can borrow for short-time use.

We arrived here via a local bus. It was a hotel-to-hotel service, but if you're a bit picky and sensitive, you wanna make sure that you're riding a tourist bus that doesn't have a lot of stopovers. We made that mistake of not asking and took the one with the lowest fare. We traveled from Bagan to Mandalay. It took about 4 to 5 hours with all the stopovers, but there's only one toilet break / stop.

Selected this hotel from reviews in Trip Advisor. I was totally pleased.
Greeted at the front desk by Manager Terrance and smiling , pleasant happy reception staff. Given a cool drink and refresh towel. A nice touch. As I stayed last month in the rainy season, the hotel was not busy. A problem with my AC was immediately rectified by a change of room. I was given help to do that and a little while after, answered a knock on the door to see 4 staff who came to make sure everything was OK (see photo).
Rooms are a very good size (read another review saying they are a little small, certainly not my experience. Nice large bathroom also.
Very nice breakfast.
Special mention to Miss Kay Zin Phyo (Breakfast supervisor). Very pleasant helpfully young lady and Hnin Nie Nu Win a trainee at breakfast. But all staff so helpful and pleasant. I really feel humbled by such kind generous people.
Highly recommended.

Hi I actually did not write anything about going to Mogok, as I changed my mind at the last minute when the manager of the Smart Hotel in Mandalay arranged for me to stay in his nephews house on Inle lake (an experience not to be missed) being treated like a family member and living the real lake dwelling experience. However i did meet some people when i caught the river boat up north who had been to Mogok, they arranged a travel agent in Mandalay to provide a mini bus and driver/guide to take them up there i think the mentioned $80 each for the permit, car and guide for three days plus their guesthouse, which travel agent i am not sure but if you are staying or intend to stay in Mandalay ask Terrence (the owner/manager of Smart Hotel) if he can find out for you, he seems to have contacts everywhere, and if you talk to him try to get a day or two at his nephews house on the lake. Sorry I can't me more specific Cheers Peter Gill
