Firstly the bad.
Fly found in egg when served scrambled egg on our last morning and the butter is a disgusting spread not butter
Under no circumstance book a mini bus with "Royal" with the hotel, the driver was a lunatic.
So really over all...More
A budget hotel but meet our needs. Small room but larger bath. Big towels. Decent breakfast. Walk to palace but a long walk to the entrance for foreigners. Nice staff. Try the Rainforest restaurant. Just a few blocks walk.

I actually did not write anything about going to Mogok, as I changed my mind at the last minute when the manager of the Smart Hotel in Mandalay arranged for me to stay in his nephews house on Inle lake (an experience not to be missed) being treated like a family member and living the real lake dwelling experience.
However i did meet some people when i caught the river boat up north who had been to Mogok, they arranged a travel agent in Mandalay to provide a mini bus and driver/guide to take them up there i think the mentioned $80 each for the permit, car and guide for three days plus their guesthouse, which travel agent i am not sure but if you are staying or intend to stay in Mandalay ask Terrence (the owner/manager of Smart Hotel) if he can find out for you, he seems to have contacts everywhere, and if you talk to him try to get a day or two at his nephews house on the lake.
Sorry I can't me more specific
