Gold Yadanar Hotel, Mandalay , Myanmar from November 4 to November 6 , 2013

The Hotel is rather new ( opened in March 2013 ) and is situated in heart of "Mandalay". It is near Mandalay Royal Palace, Mandalay Mountain and the Mandalay Market. The Hotel is very clean, offers comfortable accommodations. The Hotel has a total of 40 rooms , same of them are small, the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast is plentiful , the typical Western / Asian offerings , it's a nice little Hotel. If you need Kleenex, Toilet Paper ,Pillows , the Housekeeping Dept. knocks on your door within 2 minutes to deliver the items with a smile. ( give the person a tip , they are so grateful for it) . The rooms have all the modern amenities, the decor is contemporary trimmed with light wood. We were in room 402 . The market is a MUST see and a short walk from the Hotel. While in Mandalay be sure and visit also, the Wooden Temple " Kuthodaw " go up the hill to Sutaungpyai Pagoda, to look over the vast Delta, and watch the sunset from here. Also visit the " Malamuni Pagoda" and in Amapura the Monastery Mahagand Hayon, where over 1000 Monks line up for the Alms giving …. they have their bowl in their arms to get their food , and than the PARADE begins. A MUST see…. there is another wooden Temple called Shwe Inn Bion. Mandalay, is worthwhile visiting.

Arrived at the hotel, friendly and helpful reception at check in, as it was our first visit to Mandalay we asked for help on getting around. Miss Nan Shwe Ein Ko at Reception, gave us to excellent advice on getting around and some good places to visit. Really made our holiday. The hotel has everything except a pool, but all the staff are very helpful.
We later used all sorts of transport from motor bike taxis to trucks. There were language difficulties but we managed with sign language to get it easily sorted out. The walk up Mandalay hill early in the morning was inspiring, and some of the trips were a good experience. We spent 8 days there and there was still much to see. You need to get help on places to visit as the entrances are not always obvious from the outside. The porter even showed us the Supermarket just over the road which was quite difficult to find. There is good shopping facilities in the complex, and hotel is very near fruit market

The hotel is very convenient. The room is big, the bathroom spacious and spotlessly clean. Everything us well maintained.
There are places to eat nearby and an ATM across the street.
The dinner is good and very cheap and the breakfast is a buffet.
The staff is very nice and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay and really loved the city.

We stayed in the hotel on two different occasions for a total of three nights. It is central but there isn't much around, the sights are far away, good restaurants are not close and the streets are quite dangerous at dark: lots of cars and bikes with almost no pavements and no traffic lights, very dark, many dogs around one of which bit my friend while we passed by. The hotel is very new but looks unpleasantly old and shabby. The staff is kind but speaks very poor English, doesn't understand and it's not very helpful (couldn't tell us where to find a restaurant and couldn't locate the hotel on a map). As my friend was not well and I was going out I asked for a second key to enter the room without waking up my friend and they refused to give me. Both rooms faced a wall. The first room we stayed in had no hot water and it took a while to fix it and the bathroom looked old and got flooded. The room was smelly and we hardly slept because of noise and music from the street ending late at night and beginning at six in the morning. In the second room the bathroom looked new and the water was hot and the room had no bad smell. The air conditioner is again quite old-looking, the general impression is that who built the hotel wanted to save money. Wifi is not good but it is so almost everywhere in Myanmar. Breakfast is very Asian-oriented with very little choice for the average European. On the first morning there was no tea and I had to ask for it: they came with one bag and a small jug of hot water not enough for one cup and it was difficult to have more. The safe in the room is ridiculously difficult to manage.

Arriving in Mandalay, we decided to stay at the Gold Yadanar primarily due to its location and reasonable reviews on TA. Landing at the airport, we took the free Air Asia bus to the city. As we entered the city we passed the road that the Gold Yadanar was on and fortunately the AA bus stopped just after it to let some people off so we jumped off to and just walked the few blocks back to the Gold Yadanar. Check in was smooth and the staff speak good English. Our room was fine, nice and clean, a good size, TV, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, safety deposit box etc. The wifi worked well too. There is a little bit of building work going on around the hotel but but it's not massively noticeable. Our room had a slight view over a local market but many of the rooms views are now being blocked by a new building which is being build alongside the hotel. Breakfast was good with a range of Asian and Western style foods. Just beside the hotel is the Diamond Plaza which has loads of shops and a large supermarket in the basement which was very handy. The local Chinese market is a couple of blocks away too. We decided to walk to the Royal Palace and Mandalay Hill from the hotel and it took us about an hour and a half (stopping every now and then). At the Royal Palace, they ask for a 10,000 kyat fee per person to visit the palace and other temples / Mandalay hill. If you didnt go into the palace, you could visit all the other places without anyone knowing you hadn't bought a ticket (no one checks or asks for it). The taxi back from Mandalay Hill to the hotel was 4000 kyats (it was hot and we didnt want to walk back so we would have paid anything). We took a boat down to Bagan and although we sorted our tickets direct with MGRG the hotel did offer to do this for us. The hotel organised our taxi to the boat for 5.45am and the driver was there on time (cost was 6000 kyats). Overall, a nice hotel, good value for money and we would stay again.

We can't comment on hotel quality because our reservation made with Booking.com was not honoured by the hotel. Upon arrival and before we could check-in, hotel staff rushed to the street and told us our reservation with Booking.com was in a different facility. She then took us three blocks further down to another hotel, a much cheaper and worse alternative, claiming it was of the same owner. What she did not tell us was that Gold Yadanar was full and that this other hotel was much cheaper (50%) in a slummy neighborhood. As if this was not enough, Gold Yadanar staff later sent a "no show" notice to Booking.com in the hope of being paid cancellation charges. In the end we found an alternative hotel ina different neighborhood but 50% higher.

As a conclusion, before arriving to Gold Yadanar check three times if they will honour your reservation, otherwise go somewhere else in a nicer neighborhood.

We picked Gold Yadanar after being disappointed with a highly rated local guesthouse and what a relief it was.

Really nice friendly front desk staff who speak good English and will help any way they can from onward travel, local transport or suggestions on places to eat and drink.

Essentially has all the facilities and comforts you would expect from a good hotel anywhere in the world. Rooms were a decent size, clean, and very comfortable, all the usual mod cons, TV, mini bar, snacks, wifi (ok but a bit patchy at times) etc. breakfast was also what you'd expect from a good hotel, reasonable variety and quality.

Location is great, very central as others have mentioned and convenient to market, shopping centre and many local restaurants. Our driver suggested eating at Mogok Daw Shan restaurant just up the road - 5,000 kyat for fried rice, fried noodles, dumplings and 3 small beers. Nice place frequented by many locals with basic simple and tasty food.

Stayed in a couple of different rooms before and after our trip to Hsipaw (share taxi arranged through front desk at a competitive rate) and found standard of rooms to be consistently good.

Considering the varied and often disappointing quality of many hotels in Myanmar the Gold Yadanar was definitely a winner at around $65-70 per night. Sure this isn't super cheap, but if you want a bit of western style quality then give it a try. We'd definitely stay there again without any hesitation.

Very decent hotel with nice beds, free breakfast and wifi. I'm not sure if they offer free pick up from airport because we came from the bus station, didn't bother to ask. Hotel staff are friendly, always willing to help and speak English. Hotel location is just across a market and big grocery.

"Check the room before agreeing to stay as not all rooms are the same. As with any hotel in Myanmar check that everything in the room works. We stayed here twice. No regrets."
