I have to say that I found India a very safe place to visit and at no time felt uncomfortable. However we were two men travelling together and therefore cannot say exactly what it is like as a female traveller although I believe my wife would have felt very comfortable if she had been travelling with me. On the whole Indians appear very respectful and I don't believe that you will have any particular problem. In respect of your belongings in your room, the hotel seemed secure but as with any sort of travel, if you can't put valuables in a safe then I would suggest you keep them on you at all times.
