After nearly four decades Poppies is still being discovered by those wishing to escape the glitz and glamour of grandiose hotels while expecting comfortable clean surroundings, friendly service, and Balinese charm. Spacious individual thatched cottages filled with collectors' antiques, Indonesian fabrics and a host of creature comforts nestle in beautifully kept gardens with ponds, waterfalls, towering coconut palms, and a stunning swimming pool built among rocks and sunbathing terraces, overhung with riotous bougainvillea.

If you are going to visit Kuta however also want to experience a traditional Balinese hotel then Poppies is your No1 and only choice!! What can I say about this amazing place other than it’s an oasis in the middle of a busy busy tourist town! There’s no fancy entrance, blink and you will walk past the 3 foot wooden door in the wall of Poppies Lane 1. Don’t worry about a fancy entrance as this is the start of what makes Poppies Cottages so special! Poppies 1 is a busy busy narrow lane with scooters and people walking up and down between Kuta Beach Walk and Legian Street, the lane has loads of bars and restaurants, shops and market stalls however when you step through that tiny door in the wall it’s like you have stepped from 1 World to another!!! You find yourself in the most

Thanks Mat for taking the time to write us such a comprehensive review. We are of course delighted to read it, as it really helps others to discover us. We are looking into Room 25's water pressure etc.

I stayed at Poppies for four nights, prior to a dive trip to Wakatobi as well as an additional night before returning home. We loved Poppies and would not stay anywhere else if wanting to be fairly close to the airport. As others have mentioned it’s in the middle of crazy Kuta, but you would never know it. It is very quiet, has beautiful grounds and a fabulous pool. The cottages are very pretty and private. All of the staff we met were very friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful. We did two tours, one booked through Poppies and one via Forever Vacations. We really enjoyed both of them and were so glad we hired a private driver. If you are not an experienced motorcycle rider, I highly recommend hiring a driver. It’s not very expensive and the driving is pretty

Fourth stay, first review. What is there left to say about this gorgeous, alluring property that hasn't already been said. My flight was some 45 minutes late and after disembarkation made my way into that concrete monstrosity that is the new arrivals hall. Tourism on an industrial scale. God, how I miss the old airport with all it's faults and foibles but also it's undeniable charm and that unique Bali smell that greeted you upon arrival. On espying the huge lines at immigration my mood began to darken considerably. An hour later (!) after finally clearing customs I then struggled to find my driver, sent by Poppies to pick me up. Eventually he was discovered surreptitously sitting behind some signage, largely hidden from view. Upon arrival at the property the healing process

Loved my seven day stay at Poppies. All the staff were friendly and helpful, an excellent breakfast was brought to our room every morning, the rooms were kept clean, bed was turned down for us in the evening, mosquito coil lit on porch (didn’t encounter mosquitoes anyway, which is a good thing). Supplied with fresh drinking water and bananas daily. Aircon, fridge, fan, television all good. Tranquil setting in gardens, not really a place for children so makes it more peaceful around the pool. Pool is a good size and nice discreet areas around it to sit. You felt a million miles away yet you are right in the heart of Kuta. Maybe not for everyone but I will definitely book again.

After booking Poppies I was warned by many people about being 'right in the thick of Kuta' & 'yes' we were. It was fabulous! Start of the low season, not school holidays, no schoolies, we struck gold. Once you step through the front gate life slows, in amongst beautiful tropical gardens, ponds, walkways, little bridges & absolute calm. Carefully placed traditional cabins, dotted throughout the gardens. You honestly feel you are there alone, safe & private. We didn't hear another guest. We found the staff to be discreet, friendly, happy & honest.Complimentary airport transfers are a great bonus. The lovely air conditioned (with fans too) cabins were so comfortable & clean. The little verandah on each were private & quaint. Fresh water supplied each day was so welcomed. The

Stayed here with friends, it has to be one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in. Breakfast it’s wonderful and you can sit and eat it on your veranda. Hotel staff were courteous and always spoke to you. The pool is a quiet haven in a busy city. Definitely stay if you’re in Kuta.

All good things about this hotel in earlier reviews are totally correct and I fully endorse them. Value for money, an oasis, beautifully maintained, fantastic staff, nice restaurant and breakfast. Icing on the cake is the complimentary pick up and drop from the airport. The only problem is that it is so well hidden amongst a maze of narrow lanes, infested by zooming bikes, that unless your taxi driver knows it or your vehicle is a large one, it can be trying to find. Our lady taxi driver was in tears as she scratched her vehicle while trying to negotiate the narrow lanes. Also be sure you have a Visa card as Amex is not accepted here. We had a great stay and highly recommend it.

Thank you for seeking us out, and thank you for such kind words. We will share them with the team. Narrow lanes were always a reality in Indonesia, and unfortunately now they tend to be clogged with motorcycles and cars too..

We saw this hotel 16 years ago and I had wanted to stay there. At long last I have and couldn't be happier. The hotel is in a very busy area but one wouldn't know it, inside the walls the area is quiet and tranquil. The cottages are delightful thatched, high ceiling buildings with covered entrance porches, where we had our breakfasts. The shower bathroom is absolutely beautiful with step down into shower. The swimming pool has the feel of a waterhole, burgainvillea flower heads floating in the water. The whole area is dotted with little water features, some with large Koi. The hotel has a driver and car for hire for tours around the island, it was very reasonably priced as well. All told this is an absolutely delightful hotel. It would be ideal for a honeymoon.

My husband and I stayed in cottage #24 for two nights before we left Bali. The cottage was clean and comfortable. Perhaps a bit dark inside and could use more lighting or higher wattage bulbs. We had to run the hot water for about 4-5 minutes to get hot water in the shower, but once that was figured out, there were no problems. We took advantage of the free transport to the airport on our morning of departure. We left the hotel at 6:30am and were probably at the airport within 15 minutes. We also pre-ordered (using the room service form) coffee/tea, a fruit bowl, and toast for our early departure. They bagged it all up and brought it to our cottage at 10pm. That was nice so we could have some caffeine in our systems before heading off to the airport.

We stayed for 2 nights on our way to Lombok with our son and his girlfriend. This is a special place with the villas styled in the authentic Balinese way. The rooms are super quiet even though you are in the middle of Poppies 1 with all the noise and chaos right outside the gate. Staff were exceptional and anticipated our needs before we even knew what we needed. Wonderful pool to relax in after a day of shopping or sightseeing. We will be back!
