After nearly four decades Poppies is still being discovered by those wishing to escape the glitz and glamour of grandiose hotels while expecting comfortable clean surroundings, friendly service, and Balinese charm. Spacious individual thatched cottages filled with collectors' antiques, Indonesian fabrics and a host of creature comforts nestle in beautifully kept gardens with ponds, waterfalls, towering coconut palms, and a stunning swimming pool built among rocks and sunbathing terraces, overhung with riotous bougainvillea.

I booked a cottage at Poppies 2, Kuta, 4/23-24, 08. Upon arriving I was met by two unfriendly dogs snarling and barking . Rata the desk clerk said, "Not to worry". The cottage room was a basic unit, $25 U.S. plus 21% tax. No breakfast, coffee, pool. It was reasonably clean, fridge, clean towels, linnen.

Now come the problems!

At 2am, 4/25, the day I was flying out of Bali, a dog woke up up with loud barking near my cottage. This continued until 2;30 at which point I decided to take action. Took my flashlight, went out onto the grounds where the barking was coming from. It was the same dog at reception who was snarling/barking. Poppies 2 is fully enclosed by a wall, gate near entrance, Security Office. The door adjacent to the gate/Security was open. I flashed the light at the dog and it fled out the door. The Security Guard was sleeping and I closed the door.

At 4am the barking started again. Grabbed the flashlight, saw the same dog. But the door that I had closed by Security was closed. Somehow the dog got back in. Or someone let him in. I opened the door,,flashed the light at the dog and it ran out. Closed door again. Security Guard was still sleeping.

At Checkout I spoke to the Security Guard about the dog problems. Why they allow them onto the property. Told him I was woken up twice that night from barking dog. And did he think that guests deserved to sleep without being annoyed by dogs at night. Naturally he had no answer.

So if you decide to stay at Poppies 2 in Kuta, you might want to ask management about Security, barking dogs roaming he grounds day and night, and if they give refunds if you get no sleep. One last question: ask them if they are feeding them. hy else would they keep returning!!!

Avoid this place.

Three years ago w were fortunate enough to be made aware of "The Secret Garden Inn" off Poppies 1 in Kuta Bali. It truly is a gem of a find. The building only opened three years ago. It is oblong and you enter via a reception lounge/offie. It has three levels, built in an oblong with the centre piece being a 9ft deep lengthy pool. Not suitable for youngsters. Ground floor and second floor have double rooms on the Eastern side, twin rooms on the Northern. Third level has a variety of town house type suites all with own gardens full kitchens, laundry etc., Breakfast is included for the double and twin rooms.. The rooms were like a spacious Motel room complete with punker fan also Air Conditioning individually controled a TV with remote also a large fridge over a metre high. Plenty drawers locking wardrobes, bed lamps good to read by. The staff all smiling happy totally honest people so anxious to make your stay special. Daily our bed was decorated with towels embellished with fresh Frangi flowers. Each unit has its own ensuit and a spare one available at Office area also a shower before using the pool. Plenty lounge chairs available around the pool and a very attractive collection of plants. A colourful collection af various coloured Frangi trees. A long modern Bar area and excellent dining section. Each room has a pair of chairs and table and a private garden giving privacy from the pool to have drinks or breakfast. Within 15 minutes walk 150 restaraunts and Bars and endless shops. This place is created and owned by Peter and Joan Scott from Perth. They welcome all their guests from all corners of the globe and make sure that all enjoy their stay and that the place is quiet. Coffee and Tea can be had just for asking and glasses are available for your room to suit what ever you are drinking. www,secretgarden_inn.com will show you this special "find" Right next door The Secret Garden Bar Resaurant and Coffee Cafe & Bottle Shop run by Alvin Hancock. A staunch Cornish Man who is like the local "Mayor"of this area has an extensive complex a magnet meeting place for masses on Internationals for years. Daily programes that change. Barbarques Friday, occasionally live Bands has huge projection screens display major International Sportring events. A music devotee has the place jumping according to the mood of the time and his eatery and Garden has such detailed care in the table presentation it facinates. The range of food and drink is amazing. Cornish Pasties of course - (suspect his Mum's recipe!) so many national dishes and very friendly well dressed staff who "know" you and greet you when you return. Information is always available on how to get to, or get what ever, you wish. The shops offering Oz Footy gear is a mecca to Kuta visitors and so many eateries specialise in styles Thai, German, Italian, English (one with a Pakistan Flair Alley Cats not to be missed) Mexican - long established also a must ,and the famous Bamboo Corner and Gong Corner (niether on a corner!) I could go on and on. Look them up and be aware of just how convenient these are to the Beach oir the main drag in Kuta. Poppies 1 to Poppies 11 and too many special places exist to list them all - must mention The Kuta Town Houses that are very new and exotic and show the local Australian Sport on special channel TV too. If you are thinking of Bali and concerned about safety - know of this absolute haven of comfort and safety we have been spending two to three months a year in for the last three years very happily. First thing one does on arrival is check in with Alvin at The Garden and find out what is on - did I tell you he runs a Paper too. They often have Balinese Dancers and cater for special functions with a flair that will astonish and delight - Weddings Birthdays and good old fashioned get togethers and did I mention he has the cheapest beer in town - not at happy hour but totally full time. Need a driver? A cord for a camera? A medico or a Dentist? Our Guru Alvin can always come up with good advice. Look it up for yourselves and enjoy!

Maybe it’s us or maybe it’s that for the English Bali is a paradise whereas for the Australians it’s more like Spain is to us but this place is at best average, not sure why it gets the rave reviews it does but maybe it is for these reasons.

We went to Bali on honeymoon after our civil partnership, being a female couple in Bali is not a problem at all. We stayed first in Ubud before moving to Kuta and we wished we stayed in Ubud! Again maybe that was the issue for us, coming from paradise on earth to Kuta might have tainted our view on Poppies but we’ll state the facts and you can decide for yourselves.

Nothing wrong with the cottages, well maintained grounds and you could tell it was well looked after. The bed was no good for honeymooners!! It was two beds pushed together but not in a very good way and we could not snuggle at all, very uncomfortable. No mossie net and the repellent they gave was very ineffective, got bitten loads through the night. Not only was there mossie’s but there was a whole host of other creepy crawlies in the sheets when you pulled them back and then there were cockroaches, even after they had apparently cleaned the room!!

Breakfast was delivered to your room but you had to make your choice the night before, did not like that as I might fancy something else in the morning! Very expensive as well, I would recommend the restaurants down the street for breakfast, much cheaper and you can choose that morning what you want!

Room service from the restaurant was absolutely lovely and would recommend a trip to Poppies restaurant, however they do not come to clear your tray away, it was left for hours and hours which was probably cause of the main and last point….

The main issue for me was the HUGE rats by the pool, thankfully we only saw them on the last day but they came up from drains and we saw about 3 of them.

All in all did not like Kuta and did not like Poppies and would not recommend to anyone.

Response from SambalSamuiBali, Manager at Poppies Bali
Responded 5 Dec 2010
We respectfully point out regarding bed configuration, that by booking Poppies via our website it is a requirement to specify the preferred type of bedding. Most of our rooms have king sized beds, so perhaps none were available. Regarding mosquitoes, we do provide both brand-name electronic 'heated pad' repellent inside all rooms, and traditional mosquito incense coils in the bathrooms as well as on the terrace. These are replenished daily. We do not provide mosquito nets over beds since all windows have openable mosquito netting as well as glass, and the open-air bathroom has netting above it. Our roofs are deliberately and popularly made of traditional grass 'alang-alang', so there may be the occasional 'creepy crawlies', despite our regular pest control, but not between the sheets. We are in the tropics, and we are also a garden oasis in the middle of rapidly developed and somewhat unplanned urban Kuta - unfortunately the town's rats do sometimes find our gardens attractive, just as our guests do, despite our efforts to discourage them!

After reading the reviews for Poppies Bali, I was very excited, especially as we knew from word of mouth to book at least 7 months in advance to get a cottage in the high season (we went in the summer of 2008).

Due to flight maintance we arrived in Bali 4 hours later than we should had, and were worried that the driver to pick us up from the airport may have left. We were wrong! He happily greeted us and didnt seem disgruntled at having to wait so long extra! We took the 10 minute ride along the treachourous roads in Bali, with him explaining where things were, what was going on ecetera. We then entered a small lane and went into the hotel eventually (this lane was TINY the driver was excellent at manouvering!). Anyway as soon as we came in the bellboy gathered our luggage and we checked in, (got cottage number 19 and 21 as there were four of us).

The rooms were more than adequete, providing a refrigirator, LCD TV, Stereo, Ipod connector, safe and plenty of storage space. They were clean and very spacious, not to mention beautifully decorated. We took showers and cleaned up in one of the most exotic bathrooms that i have ever been in. There was an open ceiling, (with gauze to keep out insects and birds etc) which had a kind of small garden inside. There was a sunken bathtub, and even though we werent expecting shampoo etc as the price is very low it is included.

The beds are comfortable, not too firm and not too soft. Some rooms have actual duvet covers which i find extremley rare in hotels nowadays, but most have the norm of a blanket and a brown thingy (like another warm blanket) and another blanket. Very comfortable.

At 11 am the cleaning comes, and at 5-6pm the people with the mosquito incense come. Sometimes the mosquito incense is a bit annoying if you are bathing or something after the beach or pool but it definatley helps.

The poppies restuarant is located just about 1 minute down the lane. It serves amazing brekfasts for very nice prices, however if you get brekfast included with the room then it can get a bit boring if you are staying over 7-10 days. It is a bit pricy for dinner, but i can reccomend the "Bali Agung" Restuarant abit down the lane towards the beach direction. The lane is also great for chemists at the Walon hotel, (Walon Apotec Chemist), as sometimes the water is not clean and you can easily get an upset stomach.

The pool at the hotel is fantastic and the perfect size. It is never full of screaming kids however there are some in the hotel. There is a VERY well priced bar at the pool, with a beer costing 45000RP (3dollars), and thats the hotel bar! There is also an internet room that provides a medocre speed internet perfect for checking emails (they are mac minis x2) but it is full most of the day so reccomend going around 7pm until 11 as that is when it closes and is empty. It is free so thats great! Poppies also supplies free wifi in the rooms so its great for laptops as well.

The staff are very well trained, friendly and you can be sure that you are going to have a good time! Its location is a five minute walk from the beach.

If you are going to learn to surf, do not buy from these people selling it on the street, go up the Hard rock hotel toward the roundabout at the top with the guitar, and then turn around, you will see "Bali Learn To Surf". They are great, and cheap. It may be around the same option everywhere else, but you can rent a board after that for 45000 (3 dollars) for the DAY. People on the beach can rent around 40000-75000 per HOUR. (its 9000 to the dollar US). The people on the beach that reccomend them to teach you for a very nice price is a bad idea. they give up on you and eventually just want to go swimming or surfing. not so good.

BEWARE OF TIMESHARE AGENTS. They are EVERYWHERE in Bali. They will be so friendly saying like "Hi sir! How are you? DO you want to win something just take this!". Dont do it. Its timeshare and dont fill out ANY details to anyone like that (its like a yellowish card with like a palm tree on if i remember). Also the people selling stuff on Kuta can be quite annoying so its best to ignore even if they sit down and start a conversation just walk away cus they are so so so so annoying and determinted.

Ok thats about all i have to say about it and i hope that this review of Poppies Cottages helped, and also about Bali!

I am a travel agent and had been sampling the Super Luxury hotels in Bali first - THe Oberoi , Karma Samui, Hanging Gardens Ubud - then went to Poppies.
I was worried thinking it would be such a drop in Luxury - But no - its Fantastic. It really is great for what you are paying . Lovely clean spacious little cottage - type rooms, with a stereo, Flat screen TV's are available for hire, hairdryers. Great Breakfasts, and close to everything in Kuta if that's where you want to be. Poppies restuarant is also great , and all the staff are lovely. We are going back this November . It is fairly simple, you wont get anything you get in a Luxury property like Nice bathroom products or cold towels round the pool - but you are not paying for that so you dont expect it . Definetaly visit you wont be dissapointed.

We paid $65 a night and stayed for 7 days.
After a hectic but satisfying day around Kuta, we could hide in the tranquility of our bungalow set in beautiful gardens with little fishfilled ponds and tiny waterfalls everywhere...
The swimming pool is absolutely spectacular and inviting.
Hard to believe this is smack bang in the middle of Kuta...
The service was excellent and the staff were available at all times...
Broadband internet available in our room at only 5 bucks a day!
We rented a driver and vehicle for a whole day for $30, the driver was very friendly and professional and a joy to be with all day and, believe me, we were very demanding...
I would recommend this hotel to anybody anytime, it is hard not to rave about this little gem, stay away from the big places and feed your soul...
Not recommended for familys with young children, it is a romantic, zen style hide away.

If you are going to visit Kuta however also want to experience a traditional Balinese hotel then Poppies is your No1 and only choice!!

What can I say about this amazing place other than it’s an oasis in the middle of a busy busy tourist town!
There’s no fancy entrance, blink and you will walk past the 3 foot wooden door in the wall of Poppies Lane 1. Don’t worry about a fancy entrance as this is the start of what makes Poppies Cottages so special!

Poppies 1 is a busy busy narrow lane with scooters and people walking up and down between Kuta Beach Walk and Legian Street, the lane has loads of bars and restaurants, shops and market stalls however when you step through that tiny door in the wall it’s like you have stepped from 1 World to another!!! You find yourself in the most beautiful and quiet Balinese garden, gone is the hustle and bustle, the noise and the modern life!

The reception is a small area that’s well equipped to leave your bags if your cottage is not ready and they even have safety deposit boxes to leave your valuables. The amazing staff welcome you with a drink and a smile and you instantly feel your in the Real Bali!
The walk to your cottage is one you want to take your time, taking in the amazing surroundings and appreciating the quiet. As you walk to your cottage it’s along a narrow brick path that weaves it’s way through lush gardens with small streams and ponds of Koi fish. It’s even more beautiful at night with it’s discreet lighting leading the way along the paths! The path weaves it’s way round and into one of only 20 Private Cottages which makes your cottage feel even more private than it already is!!

The beautiful cottage has its own outside seating area where a MUST is breakfast delivered to your cottage! You enter the cottage through the wooden door and into the most amazing open ceiling room with a beautiful large bed, seating area, fridge, TV, WiFi, safety deposit box, cupboard space and music player!!! Now I read people said there was a Smell in the rooms and I agree however it’s a pleasant smell of the natural thatch roof however you only seem to notice it the first time you walk in and after that it just become part of the room! The aircon in the room works fine, just make sure you always close the bathroom door as here is the amazing part.... the bathroom is outside!!!! Don’t worry though as all the utility’s are under the thatch roof part however walk beyond that onto the white gravel and look up and it’s just a mesh screen between you and the sky!! Very private and very secure so don’t worry!! The bathroom is lovely marble with a sunken bath shower area, the one tiny and only criticism (which I have read the hotel addressing and explaining other reviews) is the water temp and pressure. They have lovely drench shower heads however sadly the water pressure is very poor and at best the water is only Luke warm. We 100% accepted this as the hotel has been there for years and before anything else was built in the area so upgrading this must and will be a difficult job.

The pool area at poppies is just beautiful and swimming in that pool every day was amazing! The lagoon pool just made you want to swim and admire such beautiful surroundings! It’s a small area for lounging however most of the day we had it to ourselves with not another soul about!

Breakfast is amazing with the choice to eat a poppies restaurant across the lane from 8am or have a pre ordered breakfast delivered to your room any time you choose from 7:30, just remember to put your card on your door before you go to bed.
If you want my advice have it delivered!

Don’t hesitate to book poppies, you won’t be dissapointed! Free pick up and drop off at the airport is also a very nice addition to your stay.

Thank you for an amazing stay in cottage 25!

Mat, Scotland UK

Having visited Bali several times before, Poppies was one of those places we had wanted to stay but not booked as out of our budget with both teenagers. With only three of us this trip, it was very affordable and we will never stay anywhere else in South Bali again. Although Kuta is a long way from being our favourite spot, we always start and finish our holidays with a couple days here for shopping etc. Poppies location for this purpose is absolutely and It is pure bliss to walk through those gates into the peace and quiet of Poppies gardens.

The bungalows are plenty big enough for the extra bed (normally a small eating nook). Why sit inside when you have such a lovely private porch to sit on with a fan! We stayed a total of 5 nights in 3 different bungalows and made good use of the free airport transfers. All bungalows were clean and well equipped with all the mod cons you could ask for. The bathrooms were outdoor, spacious, immaculate, with a great shower and facilities. We enjoyed checking out the different floodlit statues in each one! We really loved these traditional Balinese touches.

The beds varied a bit in comfort - we did get one of the singles pushed together ones but it was no big drama as the bed was so huge. Also the outside noise varied a bit depending on how close the bungalow was to the outside wall. Generally speaking, though, it was very quiet.

The food from Poppies restaurant was fantastic. Sure it's not the cheapest in the area but the quality is top notch. We had breakfast as room service and in the restaurant and dinner in the restaurant. The iced water, tea and bananas supplied fresh and free every day are another nice touch.

The pool area is fabulous and we spent plenty time there. It is cool (unlike many hotel pools in Bali), pristine clean (except for a few frangipani flowers which add to the charm) and has sunny and shady areas to lie in. It was never overcrowded even though there was almost full occupancy when we were there.

Finally the staff. Every single staff member we met from the driver who picked us up to the gardeners, room service, cleaners and reception were friendly, polite and helpful. They always greeted us with a smile and 'hello' and nothing was too much trouble. We even organised airtickets to Lombok in advance through the hotel front desk with them happy to wait for payment until our arrival.

In short - if you want a 5 star, western style, generic property - don't stay here! If you want a party zone - PLEASE don't stay here. If you want a lovely, clean, traditional style Balinese property with peace, ambience and friendly service in a central location - you can't beat Poppies.

This was our first trip to Bali and to be honest, getting off the plane and past the porters at the airport left us thinking 'what have we gotten ourselves into'!

Waiting outside the airport & easy to find was the driver from Poppies, who was helpful & cheerful despite our plane being 2 hours late and it being after midnight. Our eyes were wide as we negotiated the narrow lanes and we settled in for the first of ten nights.

Well our first impression was far from how we found Bali and Kuta, we ended up loving it! A huge part was being able to escape to the oasis of Poppies, as soon as you step into the grounds, the noise, hustle and bustle disappear. I don't think we could have handled the intensity and heat of Kuta without Poppies.

The staff we excellent, nothing was too much trouble and they work hard to keep the place immaculate. We saw a gardener trimming the path with scissors. Requested ice a few times and it literally took less than 2 minutes every time.

Free highspeed internet (but please remember to actually log out of facebook rather than just closing the window!) and a gorgeous pool, spa and bar were highlights. The pool bar is only open 11-6 which was a little bit of a downer when you were in the mood and having a few, but there was no shortage of cheap bars within 2-3 minute walk. Pool bar made the drinks nice & strong! Rooms were lovely, king size bed was very comfortable. Air con was strong and wonderful. Rooms were cleaned twice a day, the only thing I was suprised by is they will come in and clean the room even if you are in there napping. We usually just left for a few minutes to use the internet. Bathrooms were beautiful, shower water pressure was great.

Breakfast was amazing, we had the best eggs benedict i have ever eaten. A little expensive for bali but waaaay less than we would pay at home for the quality. Ate at Poppies restaurant a few times, absolutely amazing, Room service was delicious and fast.

24 hour security and reception made us feel very safe, they were friendly and had no problems with us parking our rented bike in the small parking area. Most taxis will not come into the lane, but both times we did tours with hotel transfers we were picked up from the hotel.

Yes we did see a few dogs in the grounds, but they did not take any notice of us and vice versa. We did not hear any noise from them or feel unsafe at any time. Did not see any rats/cockroaches/spiders etc. A few tiny geckos live in the bathroom and outside the cottages which were beautiful.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and next time we are in Bali we will not bother trying other hotels, we think we have found paradise!

We absolutely loved our stay at Poppies. The beautiful individual rooms are spacious and clean with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Every morning you wake up to tea and banana's on your private porch and each evening the friendly staff come to light insect coils, pull the curtains & turn down the beds. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful - you would never know that just outside the hotel walls is the busy hussel & bussel of poppies lane. Close to everything including TJ's mexican resturant which I recommend for breakfast, lunch or diner! The pool at poppies is relaxing. I will choose poppies cottages again & again & again!!
