Four days of amazing relaxation in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by beautiful energy, caring and always smiling staff, all complemented by excellent vegetarian food. Beautiful clean rooms, comfortable beds and clear pool were a matter of course, sauna and ice bath were the icing on the cake. With friends from the breathwork workshop we spent unforgettable moments here. I definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to be pampered for a while.

When I walked into my suite I cried! It was perfection! This property is so beautiful, serene and blissful. The pools, the rooms, the food - so much care goes into everything done here. The staff couldn't be more gracious, kind and... attractive. I can't wait to go back! The sounds that come from jungle are intoxicating.

Positives: * Lovely surrounds * Comfortable bed * Clean, healthy food available for purchase Negatives: * Blood stains on sides of sheets * No mosquito net (not possible in the room I stayed in) * Basundari staff member took it upon themselves to access my personal information * and attempt to content me on their personal social media accounts * Was told accommodation was cash-only AFTER I arrived (no prior notice) * Very basic, uninspired breakfast When searching for a nice place to relax in Ubud for six days, my internet searches kept leading me to Basundari. I was initially excited to visit as the professional photography showed a tranquil, green landscape. Once I arrived though, the cracks started to appear. I had intended to pay by credit card however was told on the spot the card payment machine had been down for the past six- eight weeks so they could only accept payment via cash and asked whether it was ok. I felt compelled to say yes because where else could I stay at such short notice? I then proceeded to my room which was simple but pleasant. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was an outdoor bathroom. The sheets that I slept on were washed but sadly, they were also stained by blood and other things. I didn't bring this up because at the time, I didn’t want to make a fuss (I stayed at Basundari to relax, not whinge). The breakfast, while fresh, was extremely basic and did not provide much in the way of satiety. It was essentially a couple of slices of red dragon fruit, pineapple, watermelon and papaya and a tiny amount serving of diary (like a miniature chia pudding). As Basundari is a little way out of the city, it can take up to 60 minutes for food to be delivered. If you decide to head into town for food, it’s about IDR100,000 (around AUD10) taxi each way. Because of this, I decided to order from the retreat’s menu. The food was tasty and organic so there wasn’t an issue. The pricing was fair also. As this is somewhat of an “eco lodge”, I found lots of bugs in my room- I even found a gecko on my pillow one night! Because of this, I typically had to go to bed early as keeping the lights on at night time attracted many bugs and mosquitoes. This might be a little confronting for some. Due to the card facility not working, I had to fork out an extra AUD40 on making two ATM cash transactions to cover my accommodation costs. When I went to check-out and pay, I kindly asked the lady at reception whether this could be reimbursed but was met with a stern ‘no’. I explained that no one had told me about the card machine being out of service (and if they had, I would have brought the right amount of cash). By this point she just wanted me gone and wouldn’t even let me speak to the owner. Half way into my stay, an employee of Basundari attempted to contact me using their own private social media accounts. I was a little scared as I did not share any of my personal information with the person. I didn't raise this at the time because I was in a foreign country on my own and didn't know what the repercussions might be if I raised it. The person was probably harmless however I felt really scared. So much for a relaxing holiday- I came out more upset and stressed than when I went in and Basundari couldn't have cared less (I wasn't even asked how my stay was upon check-out). I would never stay here again.…

Great stay at Basundari - so peaceful and relaxing. The room was very spacious and clean with an amazing few of the forest. Their vegan/vegetarian menu is delicious and healthy. The staff are very accommodating and helpful. A beautiful hotel, I would definitely recommend for anyone staying in Ubud who wants to relax.

Absolutely beautiful setting and very peaceful and quiet despite being a short ride into Ubud centre. The rooms are kept beautifully and the vegetarian food amazing. There are lovely spots to meditate and a yoga shala. Only recommendation I would make to the management is that they have more guided yoga and meditation scheduled given that the place is called a yoga retreat.

We stayed at Basundari for 4 nights in August. The room was beautiful and comfortable. Sheets and towels were clean, shower was fantastic (though be sure to bring your own toiletries), mosquito net over the bed was the best we have seen on our 2 week trip in Bali. Breakfast is a fruit platter with and egg and one more item such as toast and humus or chia pudding or muesli and yoghurt etc.... a nice addition would be some toast. We attended yoga every morning at 7.30am which was a wonderful start to the day. We are aware however that yoga is not always available and hope that something might be done about this as it really made our stay so peaceful and enjoyable. A yoga retreat would need to have guided yoga and meditation always available to make it an experience like we had. Basundari is located 10 minutes from Ubud, but this suited us perfectly as it was nice to get away from the hectic traffic etc in Ubud. Basundari is a quiet resort and perfect if you are looking to get off grid for a few days! It's possible to order food from the in-house menu (vegetarian options), order from some restaurants in Ubud or walk/drive 1km to a nearby restaurant. We also did a local cookery course too! The spa therapists come to your room and provide treatments there, which was lovely and relaxing. I do think that while some of the staff are young, they have lovely manners and were very helpful. I do think that they could probably do with a more mature person in charge though to ensure the smooth operation and conduct of the Basundari experience... as they are quite young and do need some guidance. As a new business there will always be small teething problems, but I wouldn't let you put that off visiting Basundari! …
