We spent the first two weeks of July at The Merlin, on an all inclusive basis. The hotel is in a beautiful, jungle like setting with greenery surrounding the pools, cascading water and fountains. The grounds and pools are very well maintained. It is a...More

Hi there is a place 5 mins away but I wouldn’t go there. We heard a lot of reports that they do not do a very good day out. The tour that Mr Moo does is absolutely fantastic. You get taken to the ranch where you ride the elephants to a large lake, then you are in the water with them for quite some time and then ride them back and then for around £1 feed them. They are well looked after and not tied up at all. They take a couple of photos at the beginning which of course they hope you will buy which we did at the end as they were really good but the chap leading our elephant took our camera during the ride and took loads of really good photos for us. Well worth the money and a really good day out. Mr Tong the guide is fantastic and tells you lots of interesting facts as you are going along in bus about the whole Thai culture really interesting. Go and speak to the lady in their little shop in the village her name was Tee very nice lady. Trust me you will have a brilliant day out. Have a look at Mr Moo’s website. Enjoy your holiday 😀

Close to the hotel you have Khao Lak village (leave the hotel and turn left down the lane, 2 minutes walk), here you’ll find a few restaurants (Siam Tumeric is the best!), cheap massage places and a few shops for any holiday essentials, snacks and bottles of drinks at good prices - also an ATM.
For more of a lively area you need to head to Khao Lak town, which is a 10 minute taxi ride. The taxi ride is cheap, no more than £3UK, it’s set prices which you can see on the big board near the taxi rank. To get the best cheapest taxis turn left out of the hotel and walk down the lane, straight forwards when you get to the junction at the bottom of the lane you’ll see men sitting outside with a bunch of pick up trucks with adverts on the side - these are the cheap taxis, they all should have visible licenses inside.
To get to a market to try local foods ask to go to Bang Niang market, which happens to be another big taxi area. This is in central Khao Lak town so you’ll be able to eat out at dozens of restaurants and bars within a walking distance of Bang Niang market. The taxis operate all day and until late, I’m sure some operate all night, so feel free to stick around drinking in Khao Lak town until late... the taxi rides are fun as you sit on a bench on the pick up truck’s back (they all have rain covers).
Bang Niang market is full of local made gifts, knock off electronics and loads of massage oils etc... but at the front of the market is all the street food, you’ll find bar tents inside the market showing sports games and serving international and local drinks. Everything here is cheap, but you could always try your hand at haggling to get it cheaper. This market is only open 2pm-10pm on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday... but the rest of the town is bustling 365 days a year.
Hope this helps and have a good stay in the area, feel free to message me if you need any more advice!
