Green Gecko is a rural Thai villa in the traditional style, set in the tranquil rice-farming province of Udon Thani in Northeast Thailand. It offers fully catered stays of two nights or more, with freshly prepared Thai meals included, as well as free transfers from town. Green Gecko offers an unusual and authentic experience of rural Thailand off the beaten path. Green Gecko has two air-conditioned bedrooms, each with an en-suite shower, a large living and dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious sala and central wooden deck with a very private, infinity-edge swimming pool. The Thai villa is set in extensive rural grounds with tropical gardens, woodlands, rice paddies and plantations. A local Thai family living in a nearby village welcomes you to the property and are delighted to immerse you in traditional Thai village life, to show you the area and teach you to cook Thai food to the extent you choose.

While you can find 5-star luxury villas that look similar around the world, you can hardly find an authentic experience just like staying in the private villa Green Gecko. Green Gecko is run and built by locals in Udon Thani. The experience is totally authentic: eat the rice grown here with local cuisine freshly and deliciously prepared by the host Ten, visit their fresh market, rice paddies, bamboo path. Besides I could swim in the private pool anytime I want, and also tried the "room service" Thai massage in the villa. Ten is a helpful and kind man. He speaks English so there is no communication problem. He prepared everything to let us stay as we wish, from all rides to all meals and even special requests. He also left us plenty of privacy. We just needed to stay relax and enjoy the time as we wish. Without pressure and worries. Thanks Ten! Another reason why I choose Green Gecko is because it help locals to get jobs in Udon Thani --- one of the poorest places in Thailand --- so that they can stay here with their families. Guests can request to visit their school and meet their children to understand more about this place. This is another kind of travel experience that other accommodations would not provide. For the province Udon Thani, I think it is an unveiled gem awaiting to be discovered. Besides the best known Red Lotus lake (Green Gecko is just 15mins ride from there. I could go there in the early morning before the crowd), there are many temples and mountains with nice views. I went to the Lotus Temple in Banchiang. It was impressive and unlike most of the temples. Next time I wish I could see the Wat Pa-Phu-Kon with blue fluorescent lights on in the night time. Lastly, I want to thank Charles, who writes fluent English (are you native English speaker?), answered all my emails and questions promptly before and after my reservation. He made the planning process smooth and relaxing.

Thank you so much for your kind review. It was a pleasure welcoming you both and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. We would be happy to welcome you back for a longer stay in the near future should you have the chance to visit again. Whilst on this trip during the cool season you were able to enjoy the Red Lotus Sea on our doorstep, a stay in the rice planting or harvesting season would afford you a different experience with its own attractions. With best wishes to you both from everyone here - and for a safe and productive Chinese New Year! Ten

Our family (2 adults/3kids) spent a week here over New Year and it was blissful. We've been living in Bangkok and wanted to get away from it all and just unwind. This place was perfect. It is in the middle of the countryside surrounded by small villages and rice fields. We spent our days on bikes that were provided for us just cycling around and soaking up the peace and quiet. We loved laying around the salt water pool reading and taking the odd dip to cool off. The host was Ten , an incredibly helpful guy who not only came to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner each day (and I have to say it was some of the best Thai food we've had in the 6 months we've been here) but also sorted out any problems (including a flat car battery) and generally made things run smoothly. The fridge was also continually stocked with water and beer . I honestly think that for the price this is a bargain. If you want a few days to completely relax , eat good food and see some of what rural Thailand is like I would absolutely recommend this place.

It took us a long time to get to Gecko Villa, having first found it about six years ago online. Finally, this summer, we made it and perhaps the best indicator of how much we loved our stay is the degree to which we miss being there. We miss the relaxed atmosphere, Ten's kindness and fantastic cuisine - and it is cuisine rather than just cooking! We miss the joy of leaping in the pool and the butterflies and dragonflies. We miss the trips to the lotus lake, the local school and the monkey town - just some of the many outings and adventures Ten can organise for visitors. It was a fantastic part of our trip to Thailand. Thank you to Ten and his 'helpers'. Thank you to Charles for your company too.

Thank you so much! We enjoyed meeting you both and it was our pleasure to introduce you to this "forgotten" part of Thailand during your stay in the country. Thank you too for your kind comments on the food here, as we believe tasty dishes help to make a good holiday. We hope you enjoyed the final part of your holiday in Thailand after leaving Green Gecko, and look forward to having the chance to welcome you back: we miss you too! With best personal wishes from everyone here, Ten

We visited this beautiful place on a family holiday. We felt so lucky to be there. The villa itself is just as pictured, with a super pool. It is hidden away surrounded by trees on a private estate. All around are emerald green rice paddies complete with wallowing water-buffalo! Ten is not only a kind and attentive host, but also a fabulous cook (who even shares his secrets)- the food we had here was the best in Thailand. I'd have been happy just enjoying the peace and quiet of the villa itself, but there was lots to do; we were able to visit the archaeological site at Ban Chiang, browse local markets for delicacies, cycle to the red lotus lake for a boat trip, drive our own yuk-tuk, help out with rice-planting, and after all that, relax with a well-earned massage. We can't wait to go back.

I booked this place as I was travelling with friends to see the red lotus lake. The villa is only 5 minutes away so avoided us having to wake up too early in Udon Thani. The owner was very helpful and friendly, and drove us to the lake free of charge, helping us to organize a boat. The visit was excellent. Food at the villa was exceptional, and the property itself was truly unique. We would have stayed longer had we not booked onward flights. Not a place for nightlife, but if you want quiet and privacy it is perfect.

We enjoyed meeting you all and are very glad that you enjoyed both the lotus lake trip and the meals at the villa - all the more so, because you clearly had a very good knowledge of Thai food! We are sorry you were unable to extend your stay but look forward to welcoming you back at anytime. With best wishes from us all at Green Gecko. Bongkot PS We have sent you the Panaeng recipe as requested.
