We love ryokan stays and we do this quite often. Rykoan stay is always exciting so we expected this to be one of our highlights of Japan trip. But I must say it was rather disappointing this time. What went wrong? Nothing much to fault Tanabe ryokan, really. Yes, it's in a convenient location. Staff spoke English, which is doubly...

We have stayed in many ryokans across Japan and  we would suggest that Ryokan Tanabe is a good start to experience a traditional ryokan. For this trip, we stayed three nights at Ryokan Tanabe. The Ryokan is clean and well maintained. You can get by at the Ryokan as the staff can speak some English. :) The staff here are...

Nice Old Tradition Japanese Ryokan, with very helpful owners and staffs. 10 minutes walk from JR station. Ryokan located in the centre and few minutes walk to the old traditional street. Both breakfast and dinner served with variety. The Onsen is solid. There is a common cozy area next to the entrance (i liked best) where able to relax, drink,...

This is a traditional Japanese ryokan in the heart of Takayama center. You can walk to everywhere from this hotel. We had a rental car when we visit and they also have free parking. I have always wanted to stay in a traditional ryokan to experience the traditional Japanese form of living and I really enjoyed the experience that Ryokan...

Lovely ryokan in the centre of Takayama. Within easy walking distance to lots of the towns attractions and the railway station. The owner is very gracious and helpful. The onsen is a great experience. Rooms are quite spacious and the whole place is set out and decorated in traditional style.

We stayed here for two nights, and after staying at another ryokan for one night I was concerned about the food as I'm a vegetarian and allergic to seafood (not an easy thing to be in japan!) I had emailed ahead the day before once I realised how restricted the meal selection is at another ryokan, and how difficult communication...

Stayed here Dec 2-4 2015. We actually checked out 3 hrs ago! This ryokan is known as a very old traditional roykan, even by locals. So do not expect a fancy modernized ryokan. It's basic but just knowing how old this place is, just makes ur stay that much special. We chose 2 meals a day option and stayed in...

Ryokan Tanabe has a marvelous staff, which is quite friendly and accommodating. The building does appear a bit aged, but well loved. We found the food to be excellent, and the location to be very easy for traveling to different parts of the city. The staff was knowledgeable about attractions and shops, and the ryokan is in easy walking distance...

Our one night stay was our first opportunity for us as westerners to experience a traditional ryokan. We have no basis for comparison with other ryokans however we thought our experience was exceptional. We arrived prior to check in and were greeted with a warm welcome, we checked our bags and went off to tour a bit of takayama. We...

Thus is a wonderful place to stay. The staff are so friendly and efficient. The food is first rate. We enjoyed the local beef as just one course amongst many. Rooms generous sized with good bathroom facilities. Futons comfortable to sleep on. There are also 2 Onsen baths, one for men and one for women. We both had the baths...
