The Concept Hotel WaQ, pronounced “wa-kyu”, combines the facilities of a Western hotel with the customs of a Japanese inn. At the lobby, you have to take your shoes off before stepping in; the shoe lockers here have these sliding wood-block keys. Instead of toiletries and other amenities being provided in each room, you have to pick what you need from racks near the front desk, which I actually like. I generally pack my own toiletries instead of using the hotels’, so it’s good to know I’m not wasting so many resources in that regard. The twin room I booked, while smaller than other twin rooms I’ve experienced in Japan (which is saying something), was nonetheless manageable. The beds are full-size mattresses (not futons), laid right on the floor instead of on a bed frame, but I still had no trouble sleeping on them. In addition to small en-suite showers in each room, there are shared onsen baths, one each for men and women, which were on the hotter side as onsens go (which is saying something). I’ve read that the ladies’ bath is less-developed than the mens’, basically just a jacuzzi tub, but neither I nor my travel partner can confirm that. But gender inequality aside, for what class of hotel this is, the staff goes above and beyond in its level of service. We opted to eat our own breakfasts instead of the Japanese-style breakfast provided for free; on our first morning, the concierge noticed we seemed to be skipping breakfast, and gave us a couple of Soyjoy bars so we wouldn’t go hungry. I think that says it all.…
Unfortunately in this case, I accidentally stepped onto the tatami in the reception area and the guy made a big fuss over it, after I apologised. Not happy. I can see what they are trying to do with the "Japanese style business hotel" thing, doesn't do it for me though. I find that once I lower my centre of gravity, it is very difficult to get up again ;( I need a proper chair to sit on, not some little stool on tatami...Breakfast is very good, though. One last thing, the female onsen is really just a Jacuzzi, luckily for me there was no one else around at the time. But as I was leaving 4 other ladies came in, I wonder how they got on...
We actually booked 2 single bedroom for 2 pax as they ran out of double bedroom at the point when we booked. Upon check in, we asked the reception if they have 1 double bedroom. And yes, they do have it. So we stayed 2 nights in the double bedroom for 2 pax. It was right at the corner of the hotel. The room was small & cosy. The bathroom was small but that's what it's like in Japan. The room was clean & the bed was good. Breakfast was Japanese style & we do enjoy the bkfast. You will need to indicate the timing which you would like to have your bkfast with the reception the night before. Location was superb as it was only a 3min walk from the JR Toyama station & it's so convenient to use it as a base for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route. Staff was friendly too. Price is reasonable too! Would recommend this hotel if u r looking for a simple clean room near the station. …
I stayed here for a trip to the Murodo. It was not easy at the first time to find a hotel from the station. Finally, I could manage to find it. This hotel is different from many hotels I used to stay in Japan. You have to take off you shoes and keep it on the downstairs. It is like a ryokan style which I like it. It is clean and have all you want. They also have a public bath and nobody used it at the time I used. Price is acceptable and convenient as it is not far from the train station and also can get the airport bus easy. I will stay at this hotel again, if I return to Toyama.
This is really a great japan style hotel. They have very good Japan style breakfast as well. Although the reception staff English may be not good enough, overall the service is great. There is wifi inside the room with good signal. Male bathhouse is great, but female bathhouse is comparatively small. Strongly recommend to stay in this hotel.
