Hands down the best hotel we stayed in hokkaido. Got the half board package with river side view room and everything was perfect. Dinner was great and the highlight would be being able to soak in onsen while having a close up view of the deers just outside. Would definitely stay again

My family and I from Singapore were visiting Hokkaido. We were extremely delighted to have booked a night's stay at La Vista Akangawa. From our arrival, we were made to feel at home and the lobby/reception area was lovely. The rooms were very new and tidy, and it's good that all rooms had a view of the river and forest. The private onsen rooms were a nice touch as it catered to some of us seeking a private bath. Of course, the indoor and outdoor public baths also had outstanding views of the river with snow falling outside. The hotel also offered supper i.e. Ramen for all guests, which capped off our night's stay. However, we were disappointed not to have dinner nor breakfast at the hotel's restaurant Wakka Pirika as they only catered enough food for guests that made reservations. If we had known earlier, we would have made a restaurant reservation. It would be nice if the hotel also had more signs or instruction guides in English, which would make it more tourist friendly. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel because it delivers a value for money stay that is bound to tantalize one's senses.

We booked a riverside room and it’s spectacular! The view looks like a painting! You may see wild deers day and night, during breakfast or enjoying onsen. Our kids were so excited, especially they could get an ice-cream every time after onsen. Private onsen and the one within the room is equally great and comfortable.

The hotel is beautifully constructed amongst a tranquil forest. The only drawback is that, as most hotels do, they don’t have air-conditioning when the summer is over. During our stay, outdoor temp maybe around 5-6, but the room is 27 degree ! We have opened all the ventilation as told by a staff, but still the room was too warm to us. It was a hard sleeping night. Nevertheless, we hope to visit this hotel again, maybe in cooler seasons.

Worn and dated. Nice setting although we were not encouraged to go outdoors because of bears! Interior air was stale which was odd in such a bucolic area, I’d recommend they open the windows and doors to raised decks around common areas when weather is fair. Even rooms only have small openable windows. Staff very friendly and gracious. Food really not good. My first experience with poor food in three trips to Japan! Bar seems permanently closed, beer from a vending machine is all that’s on offer. The nearby Mt. Meakan hike (to a volcanic summit) almost makes it worth a one night stay though!

Was checked into the hotel by a very patient and obliging lady who showed me another room that I was interested in upgrading to. The room was lovely, by the stream and a good view of the mountains. Enjoyed the room thoroughly. However, at the restaurant, we were placed in this table at the end of the walkway where they led guests in. Later arrivals were ushered to prime spots more central and not in an alleyway. Next morning at breakfast, while the whole row of river view seats were largely empty, they wanted to seat us at the other extreme corner of the restaurant with no views at all. We had to ask to change seats which they acceded to. A Caucasian couple who came after us was immediately seated at the river view seats. Rather dissatisfied with this untypical Japanese "hospitality" which rather marred a wonderful hotel.

We have stayed at a few places but this was the best. Our room was large with every convenience. The highlight was we chose a room with a view. You look straight out on a beautiful river and trees. We could see a fisherman in the morning and deer at night. The dinner was at a window with a typical but extremely good set menu and similar for breakfast.

The resort is well designed to integrate into the beautiful setting of its environs. Every room has a lovely view of the river that flows next to the resort. Town is just 10 minutes away by car. The dinners and breakfasts were good and well planned.

stayed for 1N in this excellent hot spring resort, in a room with private onsen. architecturally interesting complex on a riverside. not the usual concrete block japanese tourist hotel! the room, like the baths too, had a nice view of the river. room and public areas were cosy and stylish with wood interiors. very relaxing and serene atmosphere, felt like being surrounded by nature which it indeed was. this is not a small hotel, but it didn't feel too crowded at any point, not even in the restaurant. (maybe during winter high season it would be different!!) kaiseki dinner was excellent.
glad i chose this one over the hotels in akanko-onsen village, drove through that village the next day and all the places there seeemed very drab and mass-market. would not hesitate to return to this place.

EXCELLENT hotel. Has a minimalist luxury façade the moment your car pulls into the entrance driveway. Staff are friendly and accomodating from the start. The lobby is gorgeous with a view of a section of the Akan river. The onsen is great too. We were BLOWN AWAY by the dinner and breakfast food in terms of taste, variety, presentation and styling. The servers did not speak much English but they were trying their best and were very friendly! We are so sorry we do not really speak Japanese.

We had a room with a view of the river. Several deer were just outside the window. Beautiful aura of the place. 10/10 recommend. Wish we had 1 more night :)

The room itself BLEW us away! It's small but thoughtfully designed, great for bird watching. Absolutely loved the room!!!!

We stayed here for 3 nights in August 2020. The ryokan is in a great location, and is within comfortable driving range of a number of must see attractions in Akan National Park. The staff are also super friendly and very welcoming. The setting is also beautiful, and very relaxing . We paid a bit more for an upgrade room which was definitely worth it for the extra space and the view (see note below re. the room temperature though).

For us however, the food is not a reason to stay at La Vista Akangawa. I guess this comes down to personal taste, but my wife and I found the food to be average at best. We love ryokan meals generally, and we were really looking forward to the meals - but unfortunately the standard was in our opinion surprisingly poor given the other reviews on this site. Maybe we caught them on an off week when the ingredients were not good quality or something similar.

They also desperately need to clean the windows of the building - particularly in the restaurant. The beautiful view onto the river is spoiled by how dirty the floor to ceiling windows have become. Such a shame because the view would otherwise have been amazing. Not really what you expect for the prices being charged.

The room was great, nice and spacious, with a lovely bath looking out onto the river. The only issue was the temperature - the air con doesn't seem to be particularly effective. When you are paying such high prices you expect the room temperature to be manageable, and the windows to be clean!

So in summary, the location and setting is superb, but I don't think that alone justifies the price tag given the average food and other issues mentioned above. We won't be staying here again - i would have given it 2.5 stars, but felt 2 stars was too harsh, so rounded up to 3.
