An Ideal Location to Enjoy a Glimpse of Hakodate’s Past The unique view from Hokkaido’s Mount Hakodate was awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Located in Hakodate’s downtown, one of Hokkaido’s premier sightseeing cities. HOTEL MYSTAYS Hakodate Goryokaku serves as a convenient base for both business and tourism. The hotel is just 15 minutes by car from Hakodate Airport or 10 minutes from JR Hakodate Station. Visitors can also reach the hotel with a short 1-minute walk from Goryokaku-Koen-Mae Station, serviced by vintage Hakodate City streetcars. The Goryokaku area in which the hotel is located is renowned for its history and features a variety of eateries, including izakaya (Japanese-style pubs), Korean BBQ restaurants, and other fine cuisine. Let yourself be drawn in by the gleaming neon signs and enjoy a unique Hokkaido gourmet experience.
This hotel is absolutely fine. Nothing to write home about, but it is clean, the staff are good, breakfast is ok, and the location works. The rooms can be really tight (our room had one side of the bed directly abuting the wall), and the bathrooms are module style you see in some cheaper hotels. The hotel is also quiet, and the lifts work well. But here is the thing: it is close to the tram and Goryokaku park. But if you are staying in Hakodate and the budget allows, I would highly recommend staying somewhere that is much more central: either near the JR station/Morning market or the Motomachi district. Why? * The JR station / morning market are much closer to "the action". Market is ok and there interesting things to do nearby, but you are also close to a place you should not miss: Daimon Yokocho. We really enjoyed our meal here with some locals. Very fun. You can also very easily catch the bus from here up Hakodate-yama to watch the sunset (which can be very busy!). It is also not hard to get to Motomachi - either walking or tram. * Motomachi includes a lot of historical sights, and is just interesting to wander around. There are also some good local Japanese cafes in the back streets worth taking a chance on. I realise that not all budgets will stretch to these alternative locations, but it is my best advice from our time in Hakodate.…

We stayed in a 3 bed bedroom, and it was comfortable. The location was right next to the tower and the fortress, and it’s only a few miles away from the morning market. The breakfast was great with many options, mostly locally sourced ingredients like squid and octopus, radish, pickled veggies and fruits. Good bang for the buck.

We stayed for 2 nights. Location is good...within walking distance to Goryokaku Tower (about 10 mins). Tram stop is right outside the hotel which we took to Mt. Hakodate ropeway and the fish market. The hotel is clean, staff is able to speak passable English and the room is a pretty good size. Bed is comfortable. Parking is 700 yen per day but there are limited spots. We did not use car the second day and was able to secure our parking spot. They even gave us a free gift which was the leg plaster to soothe aching muscles from too much walking which came in handy. There is a Family Mart on the ground floor. Overall, a good hotel with good location

The friendly guy running the car park elevator helped me find a good spot to lock in my bike for the stay, and the nice front desk staff checked me in to Room 1416 quickly and professionally. The room is very large, 40 m2, and looks south, over the main area of Hakodate and in the distance, Mt. Hakodate. The hotel is north of the main area, near Goryokaku, so it’s the classic Hakodate view but in reverse. At night I could see the distant lights of Oma, the northernmost point of Honshu, the main island. The room has two double beds – more like queen- sized beds. There’s a small sofa, table and two chairs, an in- room safe and a luggage platform that will hold two large suitcases, as well as adequate closet space. The toilet is in a completely separate room, so someone wanting to use the toilet can do so while another is taking a shower or using the sink. The shower and tub are set off from the sink by a glass wall and door. The shower is totally separate from the tub, so you can be soaping up and showering off while the tub fills. The shower armature has temp and volume controls, as usual for a good hotel like this, but it also has a separate temp- controlled output for the wash bowl – you get a wash bowl and stool, just like in an onsen, and the spigot fills the bowl quickly. I LOVE this bathroom. The bed was firm and had a wonderful duvet with superfine cotton damask. It was light and warm. There were several pillow types on the bed. There are a lot of other nice touches. The room key card goes into a slot that powers the lights, that’s not unusual these days. But there’s a motion sensor light that goes on, key or not, in the room entrance so if it’s dark, you are not fumbling. And unlike the last hotel I stayed in, where everything went off instantly (including the mains plugs charging my electronic gear), the lights here stay on for a couple of minutes, and the mains plugs do not turn off at all, leaving all the kit charging that you have plugged- in. There is a Family Mart konbinin which you can walk into directly from the lobby. There is a reading room, and even a reading room for smokers. The coin laundry has machines which automatically add the detergent. Breakfast was excellent. There was ika (squid) sashimi, a point of pride for the area, sweet and tender. The grilled fish was perfect – the cold waters here yield fatty fish which taste great. There were western treats as well. The location is great for Goryokaku but not in the centre of things. Out the back door and following the path, Goryokaku is only 550m away. There’s a tram stop right outside the front though, and they are cheap and run frequently so it isn’t hard to get to where you want to get to. Due to Goryokaku, there are a lot of restaurants, bars and such right nearby, so it’s a bit of a mini- hub of its own in this area. I’ll definitely stay here again.…

The room was clean and comfortable (especially the pillows!) and we had a room with a view of Goryokaku Tower! The staff were efficient and polite and spoke English so well, like other MyStays properties I had stayed at. Tasty buffet breakfast too! Location is close to Goryokaku Park (we took a 5 min taxi for my elderly relatives) and is connected to a convenience store for late night snacks. Izakaya, ramen and yakitori restaurants within walking distance. During the day we really enjoyed shopping at a large Muji next door and Mister Donut - an old favourite of mine. I lost my phone charger at a previous hotel but they provide chargers in the room - Just wonderful! Highly recommend.

We stayed in an upper floor corner double room. The room was incredibly small, with a column right in the middle of one wall that jutted out, pushing the one seating chair awkwardly into the middle of the room. There was simply no space to open up our two suitcases and it felt claustrophobic. The photos did not prepare us for this type of space when we made the booking, and the room was not inexpensive either! We were not impressed with the surrounding area either, unfortunately. With that said, the room was clean and hospitality of the staff lovely.

Hotel Mystay has been heard for long as they have several properties located all over Japan. This time I choose to stay in their property in Goryokaku, Hakodate because of their low room rates. Airport bus stop, tram station is just located outside of the hotel and it is easily reachable from Hakodate Airport by bus for just around 25 minutes. The hotel is not located in the busiest part in Hakodate but it's acceptable for taking a 10-minute tram ride to reach the "heart" of Hakodate (JR Hakodate Station & Morning Market). There is a convenient store - Familymart linked with the hotel lobby which you can reach without going out the hotel and you can get some snacks and drinks at night before going up the room. The room looked a bit old style but it is neat and tidy although it's a bit hot at night due to their warming system. The view is awesome with the Goryokaku Tower just in front. Front Desk staff are polite and helpful. However, for those who consider to stay, please note that their standard checkout time is at 10am which a bit early when comparing to other hotels. I have asked for a late checkout but they will charge 2000 yen per hour, thus we refused. Overall, it's a good budget hotel that I will recommend in Hakodate.…

Our first visit to Hakodate, stayed 4 nights We took the local bus from airport to the hotel, stopped right opposite to the hotel, it is located near famous landmark Goryokaku Tower, although it is not in the city center however tram stop by doorstep, only a short ride away, downstair has 24 hours convenience store, across the street there is department store and supermarket. Service was good and front desk staff able to speak simple English. Room was typical Japanese standard, but comfortable to for a couple and space for 2 big luggages, bathroom was at reasonable size (be aware it is slippery bathtub). Love the buffet breakfast, surprise they provide great varieties and good quality. Believe it was low season we paid less than US$60 for 2 adults, including daily buffet breakfast, really a excellent deal, I must say their quality better than the 4 stars hotel in Tokyo ! The services was in high standard. Good job and thanks to their breakfast services staff ! They have passion of their work. Oh ! Highly recommend their ice cream, a plus to their breakfast. Will stay again.…
