We preferred this one, the room seemed a little brighter, the bedding was comfortable and the whole was clean
Very friendly staff, breakfast included but mainly Japanese
Only small drawback the smallness of the bathroom
Very close to the train station
Good sides:
1. Nice location. 5 min from Hokadate JR Station, close to the most "touristic" places.
2. Nice room size. Living in single room, but nice 1,5 bed and room size. Not Euro, but larger than typical Japanese hotel room.
3. Fridge in the room. (You have to switch it on after check-in, place position 2 or 3 to make freezer working).
4. Good (and fast) climate. Though, it is the result of small room size mostly. ))
5. As every Toyokos (hotel network) this have vending machine, free ice machine and coin laundry on the ground floor.
6. Simple, but good breakfast.
7. Reasonable price.
8. Welcome stuff (mostly...).
And bad sides. Sides that I really don't like (imho, for sure).
1. It is not comfy. I mean homelike feeling! To be honest it's absence! Every my step is regulating by the Rules! Just from beginning! Just during check in I've got a special paper sheet with... the rules! You must leave room key, must to leave room not later than..., you must to check out not later than..., you must to... etc. And main reason it is not "you must" but following "else"! Feels like I'm in a military camp!
If you leave your room later than 10am, person from reception knocks your door(!) and noting you that you have to leave, because they need to clean a room. C'mon, what's the reason? Give me please 5 min and I will go, I just late a bit in a morning shower! At least you have 20 rooms on the floor, and you plan to clean all 20 in the same time with only 2 small ladies from cleaning service? It should be Naruto Uzumaki with "kagebunshin no jutsu" as their master.
Joke for sure, but with such a "hurry up" mood was spoiled from the morning.
-1pt from comfy.
Another rule - you must to check out not later than 10am... ELSE... hotel will extra charge you 1000円 per hour. Wow... I know it is the rule, dura lex, sed lex, but NEVER ANY hotel charge me or even threaten me for such a late. Maybe it is personal exp with European nets, and it is the local feature and normal practice. But if you so proud with 8,2 points by Booking_com and position yourself as welcome for tourism, be ready to be more open minded.
So -1pt from comfy.
One of features that Toyoko Inn make - free curry rice for dinner. From 19:00 till 20:00. But when I came (19:41) they were finished... お仕舞い (oshimai) - "The End" they told me and 4 person behind me. Really, it is not a problem to go to restaurant and eat whatever I'd like. But anyway felt cheated again. (And old man behind me looks upset).
-1pt from comfy.
2. Only 1 free socket in the room. To free another one you have to unplug steam humidifier. But it is needed actually, because air in the room is extremely dry because of heater/conditioner!
And this free socket (+ 1 optional: health or charged electronic devices) placed over the working table. So, you have no chance to charge you smartphone (morning alarm) during the night and place it close to you. Strange decision. But it will surely make you wake up to switch off Alarm, if... you will hear it.
3. Very very small wardrobe with only 3 hangers. And no other boxes. It is not comfy when you stay a long. Especially when it is cold and you have to have warm (big size) wear. So, be ready to keep your wear in your luggage.
Surely, imho.
Membership is not required, but the $15 fee obtains a 5% discount so it wouldn't take long to come out ahead for joining. It's possible to join when you arrive at the hotel.
Toyoko Inns fill up early. We began booking our hotels four months before the trip, but in most cities their hotels were mostly full with only smoking rooms remaining. Next time we'll look ahead half a year. Trying to find a Toyoko room at the last minute is probably a waste of time.
Toyoko rooms that hold more than two people are rare. Single rooms are cheapest, but for only a little more I booked a double although I was alone. The extra space was welcome because the singles are tiny indeed.
This hotel is about two blocks from the Hakodate train station. In fact you can see the hotel straight ahead as you leave the station. (Note: The Shinkansen station is perhaps ten kilometers away, with a JR train connecting the two.)
The tourist area begins right outside the station door and continues for about two kilometers beyond the hotel, so this hotel is near one end of it. The restaurants in the tourist area have greatly inflated tourist prices. Go into the city itself for normal prices.
The hotel's breakfast area is next to the front desk. It gets pretty full so a side room offers space for the overflow. The buffet was tasty and had sufficient variety of Japanese food.
Everything was clean, the free wifi adequate, and the staff was pleasant.
We like Toyoko Inns, including this one. For the price they are quite good.
The price of this hotel is reasonable. It should be noted that hotel breakfast is free and very very nice, they serve several healthy local food.
If you go to this hotel from the airport, it takes 20 min by bus, 450 yen.
Totally I recommend this hotel for tourists and businessmen.
The hotel was rather tired looking and was not in the best condition, but good enough for a short 2 night stay. The room was smaller than we had in Sapporo hotels, and was not in as good condition. The twin bed set up was very small and the only place we could store our luggage was under the beds. The bedding was also very old fashioned but clean and acceptable.
There were ice and drink vending machines close to our room so this was a good point. The rooms also have old style keys which have to be given to reception when you leave during the day. We found this a bit odd, but it wasn't really a security issue as Japan is very safe in that respect.
A basic hotel but recommended for price and location to fish market & JR station.
