And this hotel has the best of it!
Serene, pristine and spiritual, with architecture that is awe inspiring.
Grand, open walkways, punctuated with towering doorways of stunning wood and metal.
In the most breathtaking wooded mountainous countryside !
Staff were helpful and serious .
And the food, expertly and gorgeously prepared and served..
These are the pros, but there are definitely some cons!
We might have enjoyed a bit more warmth !
It is, after all a place to vacation, not a school for cultural induction.
And, being seniors, my husband nearing 80 and I, being 78, felt the challenges were definitely problematic , even overwhelming!
The meals served in the room were placed on a low lying table that made sitting on the floor, (albeit on a chair with a back and pillowed seat with an armrest), very, very hard!!
Truly.!
We aren’t used to sitting at ground level with our legs stretched out in front of us to dine. In fact, after around 15 minutes, both my feet fell asleep.
The whole business was no laughing matter, but an ordeal that had us toppling over and grasping at anything near by to gain some traction and control of our limbs.
The hotel needs to make more accommodations for elderly guests to make their stay enjoyable .
We are not a accustomed to these kinds of lifestyle activities .
And bedtime was another hassle, bending low to the ground to lie down , and then, struggling to get up again!!
So we moved our breakfast trays to higher ground , a coffee table, even though the server kept pushing us to sit back on the ground.
BUT: the food was exquisite and beautifully presented, at a Michelin star level.!
Our problem also was with the person we spent the most time with who failed to properly familiarize us with the room’s facilities, such as where the light switches were located….so that at bedtime we were unable to turn off the lights and had to call for help.
She was unhelpful though the other staff, especially Roy, took great pains to take care of us.
As we sat in the lo lobby waiting for a car to take us to the train station , we overheard a couple of women, around our age, discussing these difficulties.
One of them saying that she had never had back problems, before, but now, was having major back pain!
!
The ryokan was very quiet such that I barely noticed other guests. I did not visit the lounge but instead spent a lot of time in my private outdoor onsen, Suzukake room. It was so peaceful and pretty with the changing Fall leaves. I miss Japan already.
I'm not sure if it's good value for money, but I was satisfied enough because I just wanted to relax a little luxuriously.
I changed the meal to three kinds of wagyu beef.
The advance announcement about this, the communication before the stay and the car entrance, the bad manners of the person in front of me (the previous customer tore a part of the bag containing cotton and cotton swabs and used only one cotton swab, and set it for us as it was. It was a very skillful and neatly shaped small hole, so it's understandable that they didn't notice. I wish they would notice, but everyone makes mistakes), etc., some of these were not just problems with the inn, but it's also true that there were some small mistakes that stood out.
The meal was within the acceptable range because there are not many restaurants in Tokyo that I like, even if they cost around 30,000 to 50,000 yen per person. (At this time of year, my favorite truffle rice is delicious, so it's more expensive than the accommodation fee here for Kadowaki-san)
It may have been related to the fact that I tried not to expect more than necessary because there were many bad reviews, but in a good way, my expectations were betrayed.
Thanks to the pleasantness of the hot spring and the attentive hospitality of the waitresses, the above was not a big negative, and I had a pleasant stay. It almost felt like I was in a hot spring.
However, although I would have been satisfied with Akatsuki, I don't think I would return if I had stayed in a different room.

This is traditional Japanese Royukan nestled in the mountains about an hour outside of Tokyo. While I appreciate the traditional nature of the resort, it is incredibly expensive for what it is. At half the price, I would rate this 5 out of 5. These are Four Season like prices.
The room, while elegant, is in need of renovation, everything is fairly banged up. At this price, there really needs to be a modern shower, not just the outdoor shower, which wasn’t great.
I am not considering this in my review as it is part of the experience, but at least one normal size seating place would be nice.
Our room had an outdoor private Onsen that was lovely. We did not take advantage of the public Onsen, but it looked great. The mineral water is fantastic.
We were assigned a personal attendance, Shuteo, who was amazing. Give him a raise! He was able to bring us things we needed as we needed them.
The service outside of our attendant was just okay. We had a small negative experience with getting a car service from the train station - they double booked themselves and didn’t pick us up. Fortunately, it was a short walk.
At this price point, there really should a stocked mini bar and snacks in the room. The meals were good and diverse. The western breakfast was just okay but both dinners were excellent.
My wife got a massage through the spa that was great

The property was great- small but with enough areas to explore. The private spa and spa services were great. The location is walkable to the open air museum and the Gyoza Center (which was delicious). There is a house Mercedes that can take you around Gora, especially if it is raining. I would come back next time in Hakone!
As for the bad, the room and the resort itself are definitely outdated and showing their age. Not in a charming old fashioned way but like a 90s hotel needing a renovation way. The service standard overall was high, but there are a lot of rules and it felt like we were being scolded or shamed a few times. Not to mention you are not able to use any of the facilities before or after checkin and checkout which was also a first for me. I’d understand if it wasn’t so expensive, but it’d be nice to use the facilities for a few hours even if your room isn’t ready yet.
