If you need clean beds, warm baths, wifi and a central location in Mersing, this hotel would meet your basic requirements. Several good restaurants and a good bakery located within the vicinity. Just dont expect much else.

The hotel is next to a busy junction and the sounds of the traffic can be heard. But the traffic dies down as the night progresses.

This hotel is basically a backpacker hotel that I think is mostly used by people taking one of the boats to the islands, for example so they can arrive in the evening and take a boat the next day, which is what we did. It's pretty basic, but the rooms are clean and the staff is VERY friendly and helpful. 3 stars mainly as it's not meant to be much more than a place to get a night's rest and not much more. Very reasonably priced at about 25 SGD per room.

I booked this hotel through Booking.com and for some reason they have disallowed reviews on the site - likely due to their poor facilities and fear of (deserved) bad reviews. The only reason they get two stars instead of one is because we were able to sleep in the beds, as they were passable. However, the shower stank and was so gross we did not use it even after a long travel day - it smelled of mould and fungus. Service is poor, you are left standing in front of reception for many minutes despite being the only people there before anyone acknowledges your presence or helps you out at all. The town of Mersing is also pretty lack lustre and the only reason to go here is to get to Tioman Island, but if you can avoid staying overnight I would do so as Mersing has bad; over priced food and a rubbish filled, dying ocean.

Don't be fooled by the pictures, although what only wanted to stay one night we are after the first impression we have left the hotel directly again. Here it is not only worth looking at the price although Mersing does not have many offers. Cockroaches, dead butterflies and dragonflies in the corridor around on the stairs.

We were in transit from Singapore to Tioman Island and needed a room to stay overnight in Mersing.

Getting to the hotel building turned out to be fairly convenient. It's about 10-15 minutes walk from the bus terminal (depending on your luggage weight). You can't miss the hotel building — it is bright orange!

Plus factor: The hotel is just 10 minutes' walk away from the ferry terminal. Great if you don't want to travel too far for the ferry.

We had booked a Standard Double Room with air con and attached bathroom online for about USD$15 for a night for 2 adults. Check-in was quick and no-fuss. You have to pay a small deposit in exchange for the television and air-con remote controls before you go to your room. There is no lift, so you will have to climb the stairs with your luggage.

The room is basic and small, but very clean. The floor is shiny and the walls appeared to be freshly painted. (We spoke to the hotel owner later and found out the hotel was recently renovated.) Bed and pillows are clean and comfortable. The bathroom is decent with instant water heater and a good toilet flush. Towels and toilet paper are provided.

Wifi is available at the first floor lobby and at 2nd floor lounge. Filtered drinking water is also available at the lobby for hotel guests who want.

We explored the area for the rest of the day.

Lunch is around 15 RM for 2 people (1 meat, 2 vegetable and rice + cendol dessert) at the eating house opposite the hotel. (The eating house has a large sign saying "Cendol".) I recommend that you try their cendol dessert, which is delightfully sweet and delicate. If you are unfamiliar with Cendol, it is a sweet coconut milk dessert with green jelly noodles and red beans.

There is a KFC outlet, a Guardian pharmacy, and a Giant supermarket within walking distance of 5 minutes around the hotel. We purchased snacks, shoes, socks, hats, drinking water and mosquito repellent. There are plenty of "old school" coffee-shops and stores if you are into nostalgia trips down the memory lane.

There is a park with a children playground and a beach nearby where you can walk along or rest. In the park, there is also an astonishing sculpture of four enormous crossed swords topped by a large crown. Definitely a photo opportunity there! The tide was low when we were at the beach. We had a relaxing walk and picked seashells at the mud flats to while away the afternoon.

For dinner, I recommend the outdoor burger joint one street away from the Mersing hotel along Jalan Ismail, directly opposite the Guardian outlet. The burger joint has a lively atmosphere with friendly service, loud music and an outdoor projector screen showing soccer matches. We had ostrich and deer burgers + bandung drinks (rose syrup milk) for dinner!

The night was relatively quiet. We walked around the streets until 9-10pm. Streets appear relatively safe at night with local families with young children walking around the same time. We headed back to the hotel when the streets got quiet and dark after most of the shops closed for the night. Traffic noise and mosque prayer calls had tapered off as well.

The night was uneventful. TV channels were limited for our room TV, but there is an entertaining re-run of old Amercian movies. During the night, the room got warm. Our bed mattresses appear to trap heat quickly. We had to adjust the air-con a few times to get the right sleeping temperature.

Breakfast the next day was coffee and some pratas at another eating house opposite the hotel.

Unfortunately, when we checked out of the hotel in the morning, it was raining heavily. We had quite a fair bit of luggage to lug to the ferry terminal, so braving the rain was not an option. Two other tourists at the hotel were stuck in a similar situation as well.

We were inquiring about cab services at the hotel lobby counter when we met the hotel owner. To our pleasant surprise, he offered to drive all four of us to the ferry terminal in his car in the rain. It was certainly was a warm and friendly end to the hotel stay!

I would recommend this hotel for a transit stay in Mersing.

Stayed one night at the Mersing Hotel awaiting the Tioman Island ferry. There are literally no good hotels in Mersing, and the Mersing Hotel is no exception. It is however so low priced that it is difficult to complain. We stayed at a so called deluxe room, which has a upgraded bathroom. No hot water though. Room itself had a fridge, a chair and a double bed. Not properly cleaned but it worked for a short stopover. Hopefully I will not stay there again, but if you really have to stay a night in Mersing this is probably a good option.

The hotel was a perfect one nighter if your making your way to Tioman Island like us. The rooms are very basic and clean. Pretty good for how cheap it is.
Great food selection at the front of the hotel and just a 5min walk to the Jetty.

Arrived at the Mersing Bus terminal late at night (almost 12 midnight) and the person at the reception was a very friendly uncle who checked us in under 5 mins. Rooms are very basic and come with air conditioning. Soundproofing is not good but we were too tired and slept through the noise. They even provide drop off service at the Mersing Harbour Ferry Terminal. The uncle dropped us off at the terminal in his van as we were going to Tioman. It was less than a 5 min drive to the terminal. Excellent service! The prata shop served great prata and we had a quick breakfast there before heading out. Highly recommend this hotel for travellers needing a couple of nights stay before heading to Tioman.

There is also a $2 ringgit store on Jalan Sulaiman where you can get super cheap grocery items like coffee, tea, instant noodles, snacks etc all for $2 ringgit. It's a 5 minute walk from Mersing Hotel & couple of doors down from Restoran Syed Ali.
