Detailed Reviews
We stumbled across this place while looking for the Teluk Iskandar Inn, as listed in the Lonely Planet, only to find it closed for the season. About four doors down the road was the advertisement for the homestay so we decided to check it out and discovered we'd lucked into a nice place to stop.
What we got for out RM200 per night was a three-bedroom house, complete with kitchen, laundry facilities including a twin-tub washing machine, a drying frame, a large dining area, a covered patio and decent aircon in the rooms. The owner was surprised there were only two of us - I imagine they normally get parties of between four and six. There are four houses in the location, all available for rent, and they're below the road and only a short stroll from the beach. Admittedly the beach isn't one of Malaysia's finest, but it is a beach.
At the top of the driveway is the small general store and also a small local eatery, which did a range of dirt-cheap, very tasty meals and snacks. That place was popular with locals and normally had at least half a dozen people eating, chatting or doing both; everything I tried - and the menu was surprisingly extensive for a small place out in the sticks - was very nice and prepared quickly.
We were in the Mersing area for a couple of days and this homestay was a nice home from home; the facilities like the laundry were a bonus. You're no more than ten minutes from town by car, and there's parking outside the front door. Thursday seemed to be a day off at both the store and the cafe, but we had been warned beforehand and so it wasn't an unpleasant shock.
I liked the homestay, and the folk who ran it. It was a pleasant way to open our Malaysian holiday and gave us a good vibe that never really left. I'd imagine that this could be a good base for a larger party heading out to one of the islands who want to have a night over at either end of the trip, or unplanned wanderers like ourselves. I've certainly had worse luck finding places to stay, and often had to pay a lot more for them too.
