After reading some reviews about this resort I was a little nervous …. However I’m pleased to say we found no cockroaches or rats., just a few gorgeous monkeys. The room was very clean and we were very well looked after. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Service, like anywhere at the moment, can be a little slow but the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed in the beachfront villa and I would definitely recommend the hotel.

Hotel's Favourite
We have been travelling around Asia as a family for a while, and wanted to visit Langkawi for around a week. We looked into the options on Langkawi, and while our typical booking would have gone to Four Seasons, we decided to give Ritz Langkawi a try. Our main motivation was the newer build of the resort - while not especially large, the fact that TropicalArea / Philippe Villeroux - was involved, boded well for the architecture. We wanted to experience something clean and modern - and really liked the fact that the resort had only been open 4-5 years, as construction rather quickly deteriorates in a tropical climate. While the hard product was of course important to us, we were hoping by choosing a smaller property, and a property with a decent reputation, we would have a good experience. Booking communications with the Guest Experience / Booking team was good for us. Quick replies, good and precise descriptions of the options etc. We were originally looking for a villa with two bedrooms, as we are travelling with teens, but the only option was two adjacent villas and based on experience, we preferred not to go that route. Instead we ended up with two regular interconnected rooms. One a twin queen bedded room, I’d guess around 60-70m2? The second, a Junior Suite a tad larger. Due to the time of our booking, as well as the recovering tourism economy of Malaysia, we were able to negotiate very favourable rates. Almost shockingly good, and of course this will be a factor in our review of the resort. Having recently lost my titanium status on BonVoy and generally, not being a very active Marriott customer, they hotel still seems to be quite generous with both rates and minor upgrades / requests. I’d imagine that a higher tier member, would receive even more excellent terms - and rightly so. Upon arrival, we were picked up at the airport, with no fuss, and the quick trip (maybe 15 mins) to the Hotel was perfectly fine. At the resort check-in was handled quickly and professionally. I’d say in less than 20 minutes. The rooms assigned were as expected. I was however pleased that we were located on a higher floor, as the bottom floors have no views and appear very dark. Our rooms were in the area close to the restaurants. The room buildings closer to the road are considerably darker and quite far from everything. The rooms themselves have an interesting design. Our corner room had window exposure on three sides, and the adjacent room had window exposure front and back. The vegetation is quite thick, and optimally you want to be on the second or third floor. The exposure from bathroom and living room in the Junior Suite is exposed to neighbouring buildings and road/entry area. In pratical terms, we ended up having drawn the curtains on both sides for our entire stay to ensure privacy. It’s obvious that the architect wanted the outdoors to blend with the indoor, however space constraints meant that the buildings are way too close for that. It’s a shame, but not a big surprise. The build materials seem to be from the same parts catalogue as Ritz Carlton Bali (Nusa Dua) uses. The large faux wood panels, bamboo mat doors with metal trim, blackened metal trim, tile in the bathrooms, drains, chrome bathroom fittings etc, were identical or nearly the same. Bathtubs were different. Comically large - great for two I guess? The main difference was ceiling height (higher), fans, and build quality was slightly better. The toilets had a cheap variation of a toto functionality, without a remote and with mediocre performance. I’d say that the fit and finish is far better than RC Bali, but compared to real luxury hotels, I’d say that finish was way under my expectations. From a distance everything looks nice, but the finish is haphazard. The tiles in the wet areas are installed incorrectly, and leads water away from drains, the grouting is disgusting, dark stains on tiles and wood floors. The corners, edges and details of more or less all materials in the room is either dirty, stained or damaged. It’s pretty wild. Our ceiling had several paint repairs and signs of previous moisture damage that was “fixed”. The white stained wood floors were - well - for lack of a better word - a very poor choice of material. They seem to be extremely hard to in-depth clean, and every single little scuff or mark, shows clearly. If they look this way after 4.5 years (with 1-2 years lockdown) I really don’t want to see what they look like in 5 years from now. Upon arrival we received two nice fruit baskets along with two welcome cards for another guest. (Mr. Yoshida, we have your fruit plates - lol). It would appear that this previous guest had been in the room, as some of the hand towels were moved around/used and one of the toilets had been used. As for cleaning, well, I’d say that upon arrival the rooms were within the 75 percentile of room cleaning. It was not bad. It was not great. Many of my pet peeves were related to poor material choices, and the complexity of the rooms. There are lots of sliding doors and crevices and it seems to be too much for an inexperienced cleaning team. If I had to clean a room that complicated, I would need at least 3-4 hours. The most notable omission, besides the dirty grout / tiles, was the windows. Outside windows were *dirty* to a degree where it was hard to even see out them. There was a notable amount of crumbs and corner-dirt around the rooms. Thru the stay we kindly, and perhaps too meekly asked the crew to improve in different areas, which resulted in an endless amount of cards, apologies and phone calls, but not really any notable difference in cleaning. I’ll be entirely fair here, I did not press the issue, if they don’t get it right the first three times, I’m not wasting my time on asking again. With that said, the cleaning crew were super kind, nice, smiling and seemed like they genuinely wanted to do well. I think it was more of a training / experience issue than a lack of will. The resort itself is small, yet feels fairly expansive. With the 90 or so rooms and around 30 villas, it does have a fair size, it’s hardly boutique, but it’s not a massive compound. Everything is walkable. I know a lot of other guests have complained about buggy wait times , but we walked everywhere with ease. The layout, finishes and design of the grounds was pretty much all that I had hoped for. Ok, it’s not Sayan, but it’s all very nice and modern designs, with accents of local culture, very well manicured green areas, just enough jungle left for it to seem somewhat genuine and upkeep in common areas seems to be very much on point. Their gardeners and groundskeepers are doing a great job. I really liked the restaurant / spa / reception buildings. They are not over the top, but provide shade, tries to blend with the nature and still keeping fresh and clean. If the grounds were bigger, there could have been a comparison to Mandapa, but yeah, it’s sort of a tiny Mandapa with RC Nusa interiors. Weird, but it works. Restaurants are interesting. The choices are basically western food at the grill, Malay/Indian at Langkawi Kitchen, Thai at Horizon (minimum age, 16) and Chinese at Hai Yan. We found the western food be not super exciting. The quality was probably high considering that we are on an island in Malaysia, but if you stay for a longer time, it seems repetitive. If you travel with younger children, that eat western food, you very quickly end up in the not very nice kiddie menu with chicken nuggets and fries. Not my wheelhouse. I would probably try to widen the section with more light sandwich / juice / snack styled food options. Who wants to eat a steak for lunch in that heat? For a week. Some Japanese unpretentious sushi / rolls / local fusion could be a nice addition as well. Or fire up the grill for smaller lunch meals also. Like beach side chicken / steak skewers and maybe some rice, would be a neat addition. That said, we enjoyed every dinner at Langkawi Kitchen. And, Probably over 50% of the room service orders were OK. We had a lot of small problems, but generally avoided complaining, as it again would result in a barrage of apologies, and then a reiteration of the same errors. Breakfast - was pretty interesting. The venue - Langkawi Kitchen is basically way too small to accommodate all guests. The solution, so far, has been to create a booking system for 3 timeslots, that everyone then chooses to ignore. The result is pandemonium from 9.30 til 10.30. How to fix this? Well, it’s quite simple. What you do is run breakfast out of Horizon as well (adults only) and then everyone will be happy. Apparently that is too complicated, so for now, we live with chaos. I’d say, I have tried much poorer breakfasts at RC (Yes, RC Bali, I’m thinking of you), but your claim to fame can not be simply that you are better than the worst RC in Asia. So - I’d strongly recommend the two venue solution. Why this is even a surprise, is sort of mind boggling. They must have known how many pax they can fit in the room, and how many pax is in the resort. Also, the resort has a strong presence of honeymoon / travel of a lifetime crowd, so I guess it’s natural that they don’t eat breakfast at 07.30 ? To make it even better, they could extend the breakfast till 12 - and make it more brunch like and raise the price a bit. Quality of fruit and beverages was high. The juices are fresh. The fruit is fresh. The eggs are alright, the pancake/waffle station is pretty fast and tastes fresh. I can’t comment on the asian sections, but the guests seemed happy. The cakes / pastries were fine as well - the high humidity kills pastries in minutes, so it’s not super great, but it was fine. We had some pretty wild outliers at the breakfast though. The funniest was when someone decided to use baking powder instead of powdered sugar as sprinkles on the croissants one morning. That was interesting. Another time we had the weirdest pistachio croissants with a tasteless wasabi looking green paste inside. I don’t know - but besides from these small almost funny issues, it was perfectly fine. Some of the staff are great, fast and friendly. Others seem confused and very green. I guess this is also a post-covid symptom that we see in many hotels. That said, the senior staff usually caught most of the silliest mistakes. The beach, is good looking, not very big, but almost no guests there. You won’t have the best instagram photos of an endless beach, but it’s nice and clean. The two pool areas were mixed. The adult pool was really nice. I love the choice of tile in both pools. Very very nice. The bars were alright, it was obviously a muslim country and as such, the bar selection and bartending skills were mediocre, but that was fine. I was a bit saddened to see that the entire resort uses Pepsi products only. For some reason the bartenders don’t keep a few Coke’s under the bar for drinks that require real coke - so that was a bit weird. Pool side service was a bit confusing, there were lots of staff, but they seemed unsure of wether they should leave the guests alone, or go all in on asking you all the time if you wanted this or that. I would recommend implementing the “Leave me Alone” / “I’m sleeping” stone disc system that some Four Seasons resorts use by every daybed. It just makes it easier for both guests and staff. Some guests like the “in your face” service, others just want to be left alone. As cold socially inept Scandinavians, we hate being asked something every 5 minutes. Your mileage may vary. While the adult pool was very nice, the regular pool was underwhelming. First, it was small. Second, the kids pool is in the middle of the regular pool. Whomever thought that was a great idea was mistaken. If I was travelling with kids around the age of 12-15 ond my only option was the kiddie pool, I would be livid. Also the non-adult pool has a pump system right underneath where the sun chairs are located (under a wooden deck). It’s super noisy. Sounds like you are IN the engine room. Not luxury. Both pool areas had a very limited amount of chairs. With even just 6-8 other guests, they seemed crowded. The non-adult pool lacked any sense of luxury, and during the days when we were stuck there - there were large groups of families. So if your thing is 10+ kids screaming in a 100m2 pool, it’ll be awesome. In general mattresses and fittings in both pool areas were dirty and stained. I would strongly recommend a pool villa for any sort of privacy / honeymooners style vacation. In general, I really struggle to see what demographics RC Langkawi is aiming for. I think - and this is my guess - It’s sort of like Four Seasons Sayan, where people hit and run. Do a 3D2N stay in a nice villa, do their instagram photos and go to the next place. There are not really enough space, facilities or choices to stay there for several weeks. We stayed for 7N8D at it got stale after day 4. The island doesn’t have a vibrant restaurant scene, no shopping, the main attractions are beaches and rainforest. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful place, but choices are limited. If you are a couple or honeymooners - please - please - order a Villa. And make sure it has a pool. Even then, it won’t feel entirely private, but it will be good for 3-4 nights no problem. When we stayed, the resort (according to various employees, ranged from 50-70% full). It’s hard for me to determine if that is true or not, but the breakfast venue traffic did more or less indicate those levels. I would be super cautious about visiting the resort at anywhere near full occupancy. If you go outside of the high season, you will have a great time. Due to covid the demographics when we were there seemed to be 25% european/american, 50% Malaysian, 25% Singaporean/Thai/Japanese. According to staff, and various other sources, when running normal operations it’s around 50% Chinese, 25% Singaporean/Thai, and 25% “everything else”. This also shows in the culinary options and venues. We tried several of the in-hotel activities and external activities. The nature walks, Kayaking run by hotel staff was excellent. The external activity (4 hour Mangrove boatride) was “alright” even though private it was *very* touristy and the transport was sub-par. The “local” soap making workshop was a waste of money. The Cable Car was down for 6 weeks of maintenance, so no joy. The highlight staff wise, was the head concierge, Muhen, was by far the most competent employee we encountered. It was pretty obvious that he was handling a lot more than just regular Concierge work in order to make things “work” at the front of house side of things. Les Clefs d’Or is always a welcome sight. We used the gym a few times. As others have mentioned, the AC is not stellar in those rooms. The equipment is alright but somewhat limited. The SPA was good - two of us tried it and reviews were positive. The physical setting is also very nice. All in all - we had a good stay. We should probably have limited it to 4-5 Nights - 7 felt too long, but the important parts “worked”. Staff was nice. Feature were nice, and for a quick stay, it’s absolutely fine. There is no doubt that the hard product is miles ahead of the other ageing hotels on the Island (including FS), and the soft product is more or less OK. I would probably not go out of my way to revisit, but it’s not horrible. It’s not perfect, but at a nice daily rate of under 400 euros per night, per room, its absolutely fair. If/when the rates are raised, as Covid restrictions lift in Malaysia, I would very careful booking busy primetime timeslots - and again - if you are a honeymooner - go for a Pool Villa.

My family and I decided to spent a night in Ritz before heading to another renowned luxury resort for next 2 nights in tanjung rhu and my family and I must say the stay in Ritz is unforgettable and is even better than the other luxury resort . Here are some highlights: Service - upon arrival , we were greeted by the super friendly front desk officer (a Caucasian male , forgot his name) , he walked us through the hotel and sent us to the rooms . It came with a big surprise that both our rooms were given complimentary upgrade with one room being upgraded to villa in conjunction of my dad’s birthday celebration. That is out of our expectations and kudos the Ritz team for their thoughtfulness and warm welcoming! Rooms - we first check into the junior suite and we were so impressed by the spaciousness and cleanliness of the room. The room looks new and well maintained but there are stain with sofa at the balcony perhaps due to the open air but totally acceptable for us. We later walked over to my parents villa and we cannot stop “wow” upon the entering the villa. The villa is really stunning with large space, high ceiling , super huge bathroom, large pool , bbq area etc etc. Breakfast - undoubtedly one of the best hotel breakfast I have ever had. There were so much of food and beverages choices and the bakeries were really great. Overall, I am glad that we made right choice to spend a night in Ritz but a night is definitely not enough!

Simply outstanding. A home from home where staff are brilliant, service exemplary and accommodation stunning. I had not visited the ritz since pre Covid and the experience was worth the wait. I and my wife have always loved the ritz, it’s position, beach and rooms but this time it somehow just felt even better. The staff were quite fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Incredible service from the starry young team at horizons bar and the super helpful team at the langkawi kitchen and beach grill. To top it all the sous chef Khairul shared his laksa recipe….although I am not sure my attempt will reach his dizzy heights. I could not sign off without a mention for Raj and Julie at horizons - thanks for making those sunsets a little bit more special. To sum up. This place just has that something. From the moment you arrive the relaxation kicks in and everything is utterly seamless . Just wonderful. This time we stayed at a beach villa. Glorious for morning dips in the sea. Love love love the ritz and the staff and will be back….for sure.

We received an amazing upgrade at this hotel. They upgraded us to an over water villa with a private pool. Amazing views overlooking the Andaman sea from the bed. Incredibly private and romantic. The only interruption was from the monkeys that showed up on the patio (be careful). Service was exceptional. Complimentary breakfast was a huge hit. we enjoyed the fitness center and beach activities. The resort is very spread out so it is a long walk to the restaurants and bars and gym. This was snot an issue with us and they do offer golf carts to drive you around. The Hotel is situated right in the jungle and they have done a great job making you feel like you are surrounded by the wildlife and fauna. Overall it was a good value for a Ritz property. It is also close to Cenang beach, which is great for cheaper bars, restaurants and shopping. Grab taxis make it very convenient to visit the local area.
