The Yeng Keng is a up to date, newly renovated, historic building well situated in the historic center of Georgetown. The rooms are small yet well appointed with all modern conveniences. The staff is engaging and helpful. There is a cafe attached to the hotel under the same ownership which serves very good southern china/HK style food. The breakfast is... More

This beautifully restored mansion boasts well-appointed rooms with traditional Chinese and contemporary touches. It has modern washrooms, TV, refrigerator, and TV. The central location makes it easy to explore all parts of George Town, especially the various food destinations. The staff welcomed us like family, met our every request, and gave us great recommendations. We highly recommend the Explore Georgetown... More

The Yeng Keng hotel and it's surroundings make you feel like you have entered a time machine. The Georgetown area of Penang is very beautiful and peculiar but the hotel seems to have lost part of it's charm. Despite the very pleasant staff that do their most to attend your needs, the management does not seem to be as much... More

2016 marks our 4th year with Yeng Keng. We have been here countless of times. On average, two visits per year so far and en-counting. we have known all the staff since 2011/2012 and every time we are back there, they would all come and say hello. never a let down. thank you Ms Yeoh, Haniff (cafe) and all the... This hotel is very open to the elements, clever design, but you wouldn't know. Rooms are small, but clean, hot shower and it has a pool, very welcome on a hot day. Close to all the sites and the staff at the hotel will call you taxis and rickshaws. I liked the simplicity of this place and would stay again.... More

This small hotel is a gem. It is in an area popular with backpackers, which means good bars and restaurants nearby, but it is set back from the main road so it's pretty quiet. Rooms are small-ish, but perfectly adequate and very nicely decorated/kitted out, as are the public/bar areas of the hotel. Staff are lovely, helpful and attentive and... More

It's a quaint hotel with a very helpful receptionist. The rooms are clean and decent in size. The breakfast that was included was good. I liked it because it had local stuff like curry chicken, prata or roti chennai, nyonya kuehs etc. The hotel is also well located within walking distance to many places in Georgetown. Most importantly, it is... More

The first impression was great. Even when our Uber motorist told us that there are many butique hotels in Penang cheaper and nicer than this one. They did not have our reservation (booking.com problem they said). The room they gave us was not the one reserved. The receptionist did everything she could to rapidly solve our problems. The high point... More

I won't write about the charm of its heritage, others have written much about it. This was my third time staying at Yeng Keng in six years, so perhaps I approach the hotel slightly differently - more like revisiting an old friend - so it was more of feelings of familiarity and comfort. The hospitality is still excellent, the architecture... More

I had three lovely nights here- the room was beautiful as was the lobby and the upstairs lounge area and the gardens. It was very easy to get around from here and there are plenty of eating options nearby. There was a good breakfast next door in Yeng Keng Cafe but the staff here had no interest in serving customers... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Yeng Keng Hotel is a 20-room restored heritage boutique hotel located in one of the oldest surviving and intact 19th-century buildings at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang. Like many of the other buildings in the neighbourhood, it was originally built in the mid 1800's as a private residence. The Anglo Indian bungalow belonged initially to Shaik Eusoffe bin Shaik Latiff an Indian Muslim family and remains unique in Chulia Street for not being relegated to the rear of a row of shop-houses blocking its facade. In 1897 trustees of the Cantonese Club 'Ying Han Pit Shu' bought the building on behalf of the association, later donating it to the trustees of the Straits Chinese Building Association in 1939. The building was later leased to Yeng Keng Hotel. The conversion from a residence into a budget hotel was the prevailing trend along the street at the beginning of the 20th century. Small places of lodgings that were conveniently reached from the harbour were in great demand as the traffic in the port grew. An impressive traditional Chinese entrance gate was constructed announcing entry to the 'Lodging House,' adding grandeur to the commercial establishment and to distinguish it from the rest of the buildings on the street. Conservation and upgrading by the present owner, Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd, was undertaken in March 2009 with the renewed Yeng Keng Hotel completed in April 2010. ... more   less
