We arrived at around 1130am and was checked in by Renuga who informed us that check in time was 3pm. That's all good and standard. We paid the deposit via credit card & left for lunch and sightseeing. Returned at 410pm & Rachel was unable to locate our booking. She also wasn't able to locate the deposit that was paid. After much difficulty which included 2 disappearing acts to the backroom, she managed to locate our booking. We were informed that they were "cleaning the room" (which was supposed to be ready since 3pm. So what if we had come back at 3pm instead?). The wait was made more entertaining by an agitated lady complaining about how dusty her room was and demanding a manager to go with her to inspect the replacement room they are giving her. In summary it took the staff more than half an hour to give us a room that we already checked in to! That aside, the hotel's location is fantastic and the room is spacious. But will not stay again. Instead there's an interesting Granite hotel directly opposite that will have my business next time.

Special thanks to Mr Ashraf for making our stay perfect. We stayed in Jen Hotel for 4 days 3 nights in Dec 22. On the night we check-in, we were offered a member rate to upgrade to an apartment from the family room we booked under the Shangri-la Circle membership. However, as it was late and we were quite tired due to flight delay, we did not took up the offer on the first day. We went over to the recep the next day for the upgrade. Unfortunately, the apartment was fully booked. The customer service manager told us that she will get back to us again. After we did not hear from the team for quite awhile, we went over to the reception to ask again. This was when Mr Ashraf took over and offered us the same rate for a suite. As the suite did not came with complimentary breakfasts and washer like the apartment, Mr Ashraf specially arranged the breakfast and laundry service for us. There was slight miscommunication with other staff and they were unaware of the arrangement. Mr Ashraf managed to correct them. There was some confusion on the total bill too (when it mentioned “incl taxes” but actually still subjected service charges and SST). Nevertheless, we were grateful to have Mr Ashraf during our stay and before we left, he handled us some local delicacies. Thank you!

This has got to be the most disappointing Shangri-La experience I have ever had. It is shocking to me that this is the sort of standard that an international hotelier would deem acceptable. My family, consisting of myself, my husband and toddler arrived after a 5.5 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. As we pulled into the driveway of JEN Georgetown to unload our luggage and baby stroller, we got waved off by an unfriendly security guard who kept motioning for us to keep driving into the underground parking. I gestured that we were checking in and he continued to motion for us to keep moving. We figured that since we only had a stroller and one large luggage bag, we could manage from the car park. Imagine our surprise to find that there was no lift access in the basement car park, so we had to manoeuvre the bag, the stroller, the baby and ourselves up the stairs, disheveled and grumpy. After a long drive, and having my expectations high for a Shangri-La property, this first impression was incredibly disappointing. We got ourselves up to the lobby and I mentioned my complaint to a man at the front desk who was very apologetic and managed to get us checked in quickly so we could head to our room. Things were fine for the first few hours, until it was time to put my son to bed. The soundproofing for this hotel is ABYSMAL. The people in the room next door might as well be in the same room as us because we could hear everything they said and even when they use their hairdryer! Then came the people in the corridor, whom we could also hear clearly whenever they talked in the corridors. We are unfortunately booked in for another night tomorrow and if I could leave without losing my payment, I would. Why didn’t I leave only one star? The room itself is great as is the location, so one star each for those two factors. If you are deaf, this is the perfect hotel for you. Unfortunately, for anyone else, stay elsewhere.

Returned to Hotel Jen in May for three nights and booked a club room. The room was comfortable with small bathroom with walk in shower. Everything worked well. The staff are always friendly and the club lounge is a great place to relax at the end of the day and enjoy the view over Penang. They offer two hours of refreshments (beer, wine and some spirits) and some simple dishes to enjoy each evening. Breakfast in the restaurant on the ground floor is extensive and enjoyable. Location is good and adjacent to shopping centres. Unfortunately these are in decline and the major department stores have now left. The pool and gym (including steam room and sauna in change rooms) are both good although I dislike the pool having a floating barrier to prevent anyone wanting to swim laps. This was introduced when I visited last year and is still in place. I went to swim a few times but left disappointed because the barrier prevents me from swimming laps. I hope that the hotel management changes its mind and removes it permanently so that it is possible to enjoy the pool. Apart from the pool annoyance I would recommend The Jen Hotel for anyone visiting Penang.

Hotel Jen Penang is located in George Town, about a 20-minute drive from the airport, PEN. The hotel has easy access to the UNESCO heritage, city centre and next to several shopping centres. It has a good-sized gym and a nice outdoor pool. There is both a bar and a restaurant at the lobby level and a club lounge at the 16th floor. The rooms are nice and a good size but shows a little age, but perfectly good standard. Overall a nice hotel at a good rate in the centre of town. If you opt for a clubroom then there is both free food and drinks at the lounge between 5-7 pm!

It's great that the hotel has a discount for longer stay of seniority guests. The hotel family room is not large but still can accommodate our whole family, and it is comfortable. and WIFI is easy to use... As it is locate near KOMTAR, it's easy to access to malls, bus stops and george town heritage. The swimming pool is too small but no complain from my family so far, but the floor of the pool seems did not renoviated last time, seems have the old look when the building was opened in 1986... The access sensors in lifts are a bit less sensitive, especially on the right hand side of the lifts, please check. But I want to complain that why in house TV system has only 14-15 TV channels, without CNN BBC!! I know there is fast wifi in the hotel, people may perfer playing their phones or even bring a TV box... But please remember there are still some guests still want to watch TV, especially older guests, or who wishes to stay in the room for longer time. And there are plenty of Chinese guests, but there is only one local Chinese channel (8TV), while I know Astro have plenty of Chinese channels including CCTV4... yes i wonder the price to add more channels may be a bit too high, but the management of hotel should consider the nationality of hotel guests, and to provide appropriate service to them. Though this will not hinder me from staying in this hotel next time, I still think the management should take appropriate action to review the TV channel lineup. Besides, why the TV signal of some guest rooms have not been digitalized?! But the one in the lobby has.

The room was clean and the king size bed was comfortable. Sadly there were no tea/coffee cups and tea/coffee satchels generally provided in 4-star hotels. An electric kettle was provided, but for what purpose?
