The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is the embodiment of both a special time and a special place. For well over a century, this remarkable hotel - known simply as 'The E&O' to generations of travellers - has stood as a testament to the grand elegance of the British colonial era. In many ways, it has also come to represent Penang itself; its story inextricably woven into the island's history, its traditions an indelible part of many a traveller's treasured memory, its name synonymous with the magical island once known as The Pearl Of the Orient.

We experienced impeccable, warm and friendly service throughout our 3-day stay at Georgetown Suite, Heritage Wing. Breakfast was amazing from Planters Lounge, Sarkies and Palm Court. Sarkies serves buffet style, incredible variety of food selections but quite busy and probably our least favourite. We figured some of the ala carte from Palm Court were either from Sarkies or Planters, but it has a relaxed setting. Our fav was Planters, overlooking the ocean, good and sufficient selections of food - just what we enjoyed the most. There are two pools, one at Heritage wings (for selected rooms) and infinity pool at Victory Annexe. Both are lovely, I guess also depending on other guests sometimes. There was a family with two kids treat it like their private pool, loud convo, it wasn’t too relaxing with them being around. Gym was good, spacious and not busy at all. It was too warm to use sauna and we didn’t bother. We loved the complimentary cocktails and canapés served every evening at the Cornwallis lounge. Free flow alcohol, canapés and nibbles, what’s more to ask! We would certainly be back and perhaps to stay at one of the writer suites!

We came back to the E&O for a 2nd time and it didn't disappoint. Still as beautiful as 9 years ago. We stayed again in the Victory Annexe. Beautiful large room and bathroom, and the 6th floor pool! Just to die for. The breakfast smorgasbord at Sarkies is extensive and included in the room cost. Many various cultural breakfasts are included, we tried something different every day. We didn't dine in this trip, but visited Farqhuars Bar for drinks which has been recently refurbished with a lovely ambience and has both inside and outside tables, but sadly there was no Happy Hour that we had so enjoyed each night from 4-7pm in 2014 in Planters Lounge. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful, and the concierge was kind enough to book us an excellent guide for a transfer to our next destination. We would happily stay here again. Just a note that many things have changed or closed since COVID around Georgetown and sometimes even the hotel staff are not fully aware.

We were fortunate to stay in the Heritage Wing. Beautiful room, huge bathroom and comfortable lounge area. We also had a balcony with a pool view which is quite rare in the Heritage Wing. Went to Sarkies for breakfast on the first morning but the following 2 we opted for the a La carte breakfast, less choice but a lot less chaotic. Food was freshly cooked and served at your table. The pre dinner cocktails and canapés were very welcome. The hotel is in a great location for visiting Georgetown. Will definitely be back.

Such a very lovely hotel with nostalgic touch. As usual the staff are amazing esp Esha, our server in one of the restaurants. She is very caring, attentive, friendly and patient with us. She has pleasing demeanour and positively charming, she took care of us with care, Thank You! Food were done tastefully, we pretty much tried all the items and all were superb! My favourite was the free cocktails and drinks for guests, the canapés were simply amazing, the best i had! Once again well done E&O team, Thank You!

My husband & I stayed at Eastern & Oriental hotel for 2 nights last month. Our taxi driver from the airport dropped us off at Heritage side. The receptionist Izziat was very efficient. She immediately took hold of our bags & took us to the correct section of the hotel. Check in was very easy and quick by the concierge at the reception desk. We had arrived early at about midday and thought we may need to wait until 3pm to check in but we were informed that our room was ready and we could check in straight away which was absolutely great. Our room on the 10th floor was spacious and clean with a balcony of city & sea view. There was a shower & a tub with 2 separate sinks. Hotel had provided complimentary toiletries. Room had all the things a 5 star hotel should have kettle, coffee machine, mini fridge, iron with ironing board etc. We had breakfast both days. There was a very large selection of all types of food. The hotel staff at all times were very polite and friendly and went out of their way to do whatever they possibly could. Drive from the airport to the hotel was 20 to 25 minutes & costs around 22 RGT on Grab each way. Whenever we visit Penang the next time I will happily book this hotel again.

This is truly a five star, luxurious hotel. Room was spacious, with a balcony with table and chairs, overlooking the sea. It was exactly as shown in the photos! Bathroom was huge with his and her washbasins, standalone bathtub, shower and toilet. The cupboard contained his and her soft towelling gowns, and sarongs! I really appreciated the sarong - it was beautiful! I used it as a wraparound my swimsuit when I went to the infinity pool. Lots of sun lounges and towels available near the pool. (The hotel had a sauna but I’d heard it wasn’t hot so didn’t bother). The bedroom (and ensuite) had lights everywhere, including those that dimmed (I had fun working out which switch belonged to which light!). Free minibar (the fridge had chilled cans of soft drinks( and mineral water. The breakfast buffet at Sarkies Restaurant was excellent! A very wide variety of food, with lots of hot food, including an omelette bar, on offer. The buffet included an ice cream bar, and barista coffee. Excellent location, with the tourist attractions, including Victoria Clocktower, within walking distance (and importantly, pavements to walk on!). I thoroughly enjoyed my one night stay - my birthday splurge.

Pros: Beautiful, colonial style hotel. Rooms, especially the bathrooms, are huge. Great views of the sea from the balcony. Wide selection of food at breakfast buffet. Cons: Service wasn’t great for a 5-star hotel. Didn’t change our towels on the second night. When we called to request new ones, staff sent up 1 towel although there were 2 of us in the room. Staff at front desk was prone to errors, hence do check your booking and invoices carefully. Walls are thin, can easily hear neighbours returning from a late night out. Not likely to return. I think staff at the E&O may be overwhelmed by the number of guests. One would probably be better served staying at one of the many cheaper, smaller boutique heritage hotels in George Town.

The place is lovely. Free parking for those who drive here but it requires Touch & Go card / cashless card/access for it. Please note. Breakfast at Sarkies is a must. This is mainly the reason I came back to stay during my last trip. I stayed twice for this month for my trips in Penang. Charming ambience but the wall is paper thin. I could hear a group people cackling all the from my room with the balcony door shut. Called the front desk but nothing was done. Hardly can score any sleep in this hotel. Might not return for a while. If you need your beauty sleep, please take serious note on this. The elevator card reader system doesn’t work for 3 out of 4 of the elevators. I’ve informed front counter and till the day of checking out, nothing was fixed. Lots of improvements need to be done for the price the hotel is charging. Dated furnitures. Old hairdryer. No smart tv since should be implemented for most 5 star hotels these days. Hotel parking is s poorly maintained. Walls are dirty and poorly lit after dark. Tons of trash being thrown about (cleaners to round the parking lot more frequently). Feels like I’m entering a dodgy parking deck instead of E&O hotel. Really hope to see better maintenance to take place for this prestige hotel.

Highly recommend this hotel. The staff were great, rooms were spacious and relaxing. Food at the morning buffet was perfect. We went on an extended family holiday. Our grandchildren felt very welcome in this family friendly facility and loved the pool. Thank you everyone at the E&O for such a wonderful holiday. We will return.
