Detailed Reviews
We booked a room at this hotel on short notice ( previous evening) as we arrived in Penang a day ahead of schedule. On arrival the reception staff were so efficient and friendly, so first impression was excellent. We were shown to our beautifully presented room and, for the price we paid it was absolutely fantastic, clean, cool, with all the frilly bits toiletries etc.
We arrived in Penang at the ferry terminal and discovered that the hotel was walking distance away, about 700 metres, so that was a plus, hotel situated at the edge of the UNESCO area so everything we wanted was walking distance.
We were so impressed by the hotel, and it’s location we decided to reschedule and added a few more days to our stay in Penang which meant rescheduling our travel arrangements. Again the hotel staff were absolutely fantastic in assisting. The Royale Chulan experience was the highlight of our Malaysian trip and we are already looking forward to returning for a longer stay in the not too distant future

We were very impressed with everything at the Royale Chulan.
Straightforward, no hassles check-in, easy secure covered parking in the hotel's own multi-storey car park across from the lobby and all staff from the doorman to reception staff to cleaners were friendly and helpful. Undoubtedly one of the highlights for us was that, compared to other hotels we've stayed in, the staff really went the extra mile for guests.
Rooms had been properly and thoroughly cleaned and I liked the bathroom layout with separate rooms for the toilet and shower.
At breakfast, although no buffets are currently allowed due to covid19 restrictions, there was still a good range of set menu choices. Service was prompt and attentive with staff regularly checking to see if you were ok or needed anything. Obviously, guests not serving themselves gives the staff more work and it was noticeable that the hotel had clearly thought about this and responded appropriately by putting more staff on to ensure guests were well looked after.
Location is excellent too being right in the centre of George Town. Lots of tourist attractions, including Little India are within a short walk. I had thought we might have a view across the Straits to the mainland. Not so, but that was my mistaken impression from looking at the map. Most rooms actually face inwards and overlook a central courtyard which is now the swimming pool. But this was fine - traffic noise was zero, which is unusual for such a central location.
We would certainly look to stay here again when we are next in Penang and I will probably check out other Royale Chulan hotels too when we are elsewhere in Malaysia.

We stayed here for 3 nights in a superior double room. Hotel is in a great location on the edge of the main areas and within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal and major sights. Modern hotel in an historic building with all mod cons. Lovely large room with good bathroom, comfortable bed, tea/coffee and safe. The hotel also has a great outdoor pool with towels provided, although its gets very busy with families until after around 11:00 am.
Very good breakfast with a huge choice of food from continental to curry to fruit to sushi and lots more.
Two minor negatives were the layout of the dining room which, because the hotel was very busy, meant that it was a bit of a free for all to get served at the various counters and prices at the hotel bar were expensive.
Other than the two things above, I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

I stayed here for a weekend, a sorta relaxation only weekend. Unfortunately, my stay here was during the Covid19 pandemic, but the management did proper screenings to each and everyone that enters the building, as well as preparing hand sanitizers at every nook and cranny of the hotel, which is very very good. Room is comfortable, nice and classy decor, everything is where you'd expect it would be. Fnb at the Sri Tanjung Cafe is nice, breakfast service decent, nothing really to shout about, but nothing to complaint either. Pool is ok, the jacuzzi is something unexpected, cuase most hotels that come with one nowadays. One slight complaint though, when I arrived in my car, the front door person was like hesitating to greet me, and as a result, I carried my own luggage out of my car, and only then somebody decided to give me a hand. This is in my mind, quite unacceptable, as anyone that approached the entrance should be greeted and be assisted with their luggage. Overall verdict then, a pleasent hotel.

We booked 2 rooms with connecting doors as we had our 15 year old daughter with us. The receptionist was very helpful in getting the rooms as per our specified request. The rooms were clean, quiet and aptly equipped with toiletries, ironing board, hair dryer, etc.
We were just a little bit disappointed with the in-room dining. The promotional seafood pizza which we ordered was bland and dry. There was no seasoning which would normally come together with the meal.
The breakfast spreads was not to our expectations. Not much choice when it comes to bread & pastries. We couldn’t find staff to attend to our needs and tables were not properly clean. Food were not refilled fast enough.

We are backpacking travelers. The hotel is just 5 minutes away from main bus station (local buses) and ferry terminal which is free from island to the shore (bus terminal Butterworth as well) and 1.20 MR (!) from shore to the island. Old town, port and all what we needed are located nearby, including Indian and Chinese town. Lots of restaurants and street food.
All remote parts of the island are reachable by bus with maximum ticket price 2.00 MR.
rooms are spacious and swimming pool is clean and pleasant.
Other things which are possibly on cons side can be easily omitted.
We love the place.
Do not take room 437 where we lived. There is permanent noise from main cooling system we could hear especially during the night.

The hotel was booked based on description on a Agoda, but when check in it obviously did not have a tub opposed to the description. Talking to the front desk, they ask for evidence and after providing that they said it's the website issue and not theirs. So no action taken. To get a room matching the description as what they put in Agoda, have to pay another RM300 (discounted price according to them). The room looks much smaller than the footage they put in Agoda as well. Not going to stay in future for sure. Plenty of good choices in this area.

The room is not well maintained. There are alot stains on the carpet and there is a musky smell to the room. I am unable to open my curtain to let some sunlight in because of the room’s location. It is directly next to the swimming pool and theres zero privacy. Toilet is extremely dirty with pee sticking on the toilet seat. I called the front desk to request for a room change, they said they are fully booked and they can only get the housekeeping to come and HAVE A LOOK at the toilet. They then told me that it might take a long while since they are all busy so housekeeping wont be able to come in anytime soon. I checked out right after and booked another hotel. I guess they got so many bad reviews, they didnt even ask why i checked out 15 mins after checking in.

+1
On certain nights, the lounge downstairs provides live music and a place to unwind away from it all. There are also various function rooms if companies want to do seminars etc. The spa on the second floor is heavenly, but you need to make advance reservations.
Rooms are slightly bigger than average, and I love the bathroom.
Housekeeping staff are polite and engaging.
If you want, other than breakfast at the hotel itself, there is a street food court just 200 metres in front of the hotel. Parking is plentiful, and you can walk to the Indian quarter as well as Lebuh Armenia, to buy souvenirs
