Let me begin with writing that the hotel itself and the staff are wonderful and define how a Shangri La should be. The food at the more casual restaurants (such as Coco Joe's) as well as the more upscale Peppino was well-prepared, nicely presented, and delicious. The service of ALL staff is commendable - from the driver that transported us...

My family and I have just returned from Borneo and the fantastic Tanjung Aru Resort in Kota Kinabalu and quite literally had the time of our life. Some residents I spoke to stated they felt the rooms were not 5-star as they didn't have the 'wow' factor but we felt it is the complete package with this hotel that makes...

I don't want to damn Tanjung Aru with faint praise - it is well run, comfortable, has excellent amenities and is superbly located - if just a little far from Kota Kinabalu town. The service was attentive and pleasing, but if it is a quiet retreat you are seeking this may not be perfect. But maybe that's just resorts for...

We stayed in this hotel many times over the years. Have stayed in both the standard rooms and the various types of suites. Love the suite room with handy access to pools. Nice food and good location though the price is a bit steep for suites.

Visited here for 3 nights with my husband and 10 year old daughter on our tour of Borneo. Hotel is beautiful and very big. We were in a Mountain view room which was clean and comfortable but no real view of a mountain. Reception were pretty useless and rude. Breakfast was great - plenty of choice and the fresh croissants...

Having deliberated about booking the under-renovation Shangri-La Tanjung Aru or Magellan Sutera resort for a while, it was with baited breath that we arrived at the Tanjung Aru Shangri La after a delayed flight from London. Accessing the airport from the hotel is very straight forward, buy the voucher from the taxi kiosk for 30 ringgits and within ten minutes,...

We upgraded to the Kinabalu Seaview room with Club facilities. The entire accommodation was top class and with access to the Club room for breakfast, and evening cocktails and finger food was all we needed after days out sightseeing. The staff on hand made everything so comfortable, and nothing was too much trouble for them to cater for our needs....

We had the best family holiday here. The kids club is excellent and my 8 year old niece could not wait to go back every morning. The pool is awesome though a bit too deep, the duty manager is lovely and Johnny and his team at the club lounge are excellent. Highly recommend and would definitely go back. Only regret...

If you are considering this hotel because of any preconceived notions that you may have about luxury with the Shangri-La brand you should definitely think twice. The customer experience excellence that is traditionally drilled into staff in this franchise is very hit and miss in this property.
