Angsana Velavaru is an exceptional hotel. The island is beautiful with abundant marine life. The rooms are immaculate and our housekeeper, Azee, was super friendly and always helpful with whatever we might need. The food was also superb, very tasty with a good variety. The waiting and chef staff we all very polite and friendly. A special mention goes to Afzal and Sajwan to making our dining experience unforgettable. The marine centre also requires a special mention. All of the staff there are knowledgeable about the reef and marine life. Nittu, the resident marine biologist, loves to share his work and explain how and why conservation here is so important. We thoroughly recommend the marine talk, stingray feeding, coral planting and reef clean up if you want to learn about the marine ecosystem. The house reef is a boat ride (complimentary) away but each time we saw turtles, rays, loads of fish. Definitely worth going! The only slight improvements would be communication between reception and the customers could be better. When we requested a late checkout (due to a later flight home) we had to chase for an answer on this multiple times. The checkout process was a little unorganised, but most likely due to a busy period with new customers arriving. We visited the spa twice during our stay, the spa area is beautiful and the therapists provided excellent treatments. The cost of treatments, in our opinion is slightly more expensive than we would expect but still worth the money for the experience. Overall, the hotel is beautiful, beach is clean and well kept. We stayed in a beach villa with an infinity pool. This was also clean and well maintained with very comfortable beds. The shower could do with a bit of maintenance but given there’s an outdoor one as well that is much better, no particular issues there.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for sparing time providing this valuable feedback. We are delighted to learn that you had a pleasant stay with us and particularly value our resort for its villa cleanliness, food quality and variety, activities such as house reef snorkeling and spa treatments. At Angsana Velavaru, we are fortunate to have a great team who are very passionate about the environment and we thank you for highlighting Nittu for his dedication and efforts in delivering awareness towards our conservation programme. As for the spa prices, please know that our selling prices are constantly reviewed and benchmarked against other resorts in the Maldives as we believe in providing maximum possible value to our guests for the money they spend. Moreover, we have noted your candid feedback on the efficiency of check-out process. Our team at the Reception have taken note this remark and are looking into ways to improve this area to avoid such service delivery gap in the future. Lastly, we are delighted to hear that the services delivered by Azeez, Afzal, Sajwan and Nittu were to the level of your satisfaction. Once again, it was a pleasure having you stayed with us. The entire team look forward to welcoming you back and offer you with a much better holiday experience. If you want the short and sweet version of my review just skip to the bottom, otherwise read on... Arrival. The seaplane flight from Velana International airport to Angsana Velavaru is 40 minutes. Our flight was direct and did not make any stops on the way. Expect to wait anything up to 90 minutes before your flight from Velana airport to the resort. That is not within the control of the resort but the schedule of TransMaldivian Airways. You get a breath-taking view of the atolls as you fly over them. Check-in: Pretty smooth process. Cold towels provided at reception. A quick tour of the main resort facilities. Your luggage taken to your room and you're given the usual tour of the room. Rooms: We stayed in a deluxe beachfront pool villa (villa 168) which was on the quiet (non-windy) side of the island. Decent size, nicely decorated. The pictures here on trip advisor are quite accurate in describing what the rooms look like. So don't worry that you'll get any major/unpleasant surprises. Meals: We went for the All-Inclusive Dine option (not huge alcohol drinkers anyway). There's one main restaurant (Kaani) for buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. There's the Kuredi bar for all-day drinks and snacks/food. Because I travel quite a lot and have stayed in a LOT of hotels (also at Banyan Tree hotels elsewhere), I want to be fair to Angsana. Their meals grew on me over time. I was not really impressed the first two days but the chefs certainly upped their game after that. I found breakfast boring and just stuck to cereal (purely personal - nothing wrong with their offering). There was always a chef on hand to fry you fresh omelettes with condiments if you wanted. There's a decent amount of variety in terms of food (will cater to most tastes - Asian, European). Each evening tends to have a different theme but overall I would rate their food 3.8 out of 5 (may be a bit harsh but I'm just being honest). In particular, three members of staff stood out and I would like to commend them publicly - Hathim (waiter at Kaani restaurant), Shiibin from Kerala (hope I spelt your name right) and Hasaan Shamaan at the Kuredi bar. You guys made our stay MUCH more enjoyable by your attentiveness. Hathim and Shibin, I love your drinks/smoothie recommendations and how you always remembered our preferences and didn't have to always ask what we wanted. You just knew what we wanted or needed and made us feel at home. Thank you. Activities: Well, you only come to the Maldives if you're interested in the water - so DEFINITELY go snorkelling (there's a daily complimentary snorkelling trip), scuba if you're into diving. The reef just off the shore of the island is somewhat bleached (is there a reef on the planet that hasn't been affected) however it is healthy enough that the marine life is active. Non-motorised water sports are all free (kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, wind surfing etc). Also there's a sunset boat cruise (not complimentary). The views are AWESOME and I never got tired of looking out at the ocean view while sitting at the bar or restaurant. Where I feel management can improve things... 1. Attention to detail: On the first day I reported to reception that the refillable shower gel container was empty. I was told that housekeeping would attend to it. It took them three days to refill it and only when I physically took the container to housekeeping and told them to fill it. I would expect them to check this prior to every new guest arriving and then on a regular basis (every 3 days perhaps). Also, one day, there's a bath mat, the next day, there isn't. Each villa should have a standard daily pack - 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 flannels, 1 bath mat etc etc.. 2. Inconsistent service - spoke to other guests who had not received the same level of service that we had. For example, we received details about our departure sea-plane flight the previous day. Some others did not and were quite worried not knowing when they needed to be at reception to check out etc. The short and sweet summary 1. You'll enjoy your stay at Angsana Velavaru. Whatever shortcomings you might encounter, the views of the ocean will make up for it. 2. The staff are what make this place special. 3. We were told that lunch on the day of arrival is NOT included in the All-Inclusive Dine package. That was a surprise. However, the management provided us with complimentary lunch because of the fact that we would be leaving the resort at 7am on our last day (so kind of a substitute for lunch on the last day). So bear that in mind. 4. Read the whole review... then book your trip.

This was our first time to the Maldives. As there are so many choices regarding the islands and what they offer, we opted for Angsana Velavaru as it was a small island that focussed on the simple pleasures of the beach and beautiful, clear waters that are ideal for water sports and in particular, snorkelling. We went via Trailfinders who provided a fantastic package. They cover every element of the trip so took away some of the anxiety of such an important trip. Highly recommended. Thanks Toby Lomax. This island really is paradise. We opted for a beach front villa with an all inclusive package. This is all you need for the most idyllic break and R&R. The pictures of the sea, sand etc that you see in brochures and magazines just don’t do it justice and you have to be there to ‘get it’. We now absolutely ‘get it’. The chilled experience doesn’t just rely on being a paradise island. Everyone that works on the island takes huge pride in their work and undertake it in a seamless, clam way that you don’t even realise that you are getting such great service. Everyone worked so hard and they are most definitely Team Angsana. That said, Ajmaal and Shibin in the bar need calling out for their customer service and mixology skills. The main island restaurant provided so many choices each day and the Maldivian curries were to die for. Under the watchful eye of Hathim, the team were again seamless in the way that they assisted everyone in the restaurant with their drink orders and plate clearing. It was made to look so effortless. They put some high end restaurants in London to shame for how effortlessly they looked after you. And finally, the room service. Our room ‘boy’, Issy was superb and nothing was too much trouble. As you are on a small island and will spend time by your villa as its right on the beach, you are more aware of the need for these guys to their job but again, it’s the personal interactions and discussions about when would be a good time to do the cleaning and a call across to say that its all done and do you need anything else before they go. Nothing is too much trouble. An experience that we wont forget. The people who work there are as important to the enjoyment of the holiday as the beautiful island and seas. We wont look to discover another island in the Maldives. We struck lucky on our first attempt and will hopefully be back to Angsana Velavaru in the not too distant future.
