Japanese style hotel. Rooms are small but adequate. Bus stop from train station is around the corner. Good selection of restaurants nearby. Breakfast is Ok. Tour bus hotel - breakfast can be a bit of a jammer with rude tourists

Reserved this place through booking.com and looked good, I reserved a Deluxe room. When we arrived and checked in I had a bad feeling which was realised when we entered the room which was smelly and not even standard never mind deluxe. No drawers or wardrobe for our clothes. I went back to the reception and no joy there "you...

A very pleasant stay as hotel in walking distance of centre. Room small but this is Japan so one gets used to such size. Worth a mention is staff. Very helpful and good English. Certainly would recommend a stay.

Firstly I knew this was going to be a basic hotel and I didn't expect any sort of frills, which was just as well. The "delux" room smelled, it was dark and depressing. The toilet smelled of urine and the toilet seat moved which is maybe why there was a smell of wee!! the separate hand basin units are badly...

There are two reasons I picked this hotel, it was cheap and it was centrally located with easy access to attractions and the main Kyoto Station. The room was a bit on the older side, not dirty or anything but simply older. For instance, there is central heat for the heater but there is no AC. So if you're going...

A small bed for two persons (more like an extended single-bed), a high price to pay during sakura time. The hotel insisted that it is on central air-condition control but the room was stuffy. I had to open the window every evening after we returned from sight seeing to ventilate the room.Staff tried to be accommodating and can speak some...

It's a budget hotel for Japan but even so, was better in many respects than others we've stayed in there. Big room, clean & comfortable. Breakfast is fine - ours was included so I don't know how much it costs but it serves its purpose & meant we could get out exploring quickly each day. Good subway location too

We were 2 adults 2 kids. 4 beds in the room, clean, ok . Breakfast not worth it (rather go to Tully s cafe around the corner). Good location to visit main attractions (taxi was preferable if you are a family as it avoids waste of time)

I stayed in this hotel for 8 nights in Mar 2017. There were at least 3 things that I found great about the Smile Hotel Shijo in Kyoto: 1. The location: it is on Shijo, and just a few blocks from the Shijo Station (subway). And the Shijo Station is also 2 subway stations from the major Kyoto Station. The...

Staff were friendly and helpful, room was clean but very basic. Due to the time of year we visited for the price we paid I would have at least expected breakfast, no storage space. Definitely a budget hotel if you can get it at a decent price.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
