In Kyoto hotel prices are a bit higher. That being said makes Smile a budget hotel. It was the first hotel in Japan I had to pay upfront and that made me think haha. Seeing my room, the amout of hair in the bathtub, the ''funky'' smell made me realize why this was sort of a budget hotel. In my...

I am a bit confused with this rating. Because I got exactly what I expected, for my budget stay. It could be an excellent for the price I paid.. Nothing more, nothing less. A clean and quite small room. ( however reading back the reviews, i was a bit afraid). Walls are thin, so if somebody is loud next to...

Yellow marks on bedsheets and pillow case on the first day of check in and pretty smelly (see photos)! You can easily find gray spots or shoe marks on the towels. Even they changed it on the second day, the new set of towels still had marks. Fortunately I brought my own towels. I didnt expect top notch service when...

This hotel and its staff were shocking. Do not stay here. The room I had was smaller than my halls at uni and was run down. I wanted to cancel the booking but the staff deliberately blocked my attempts through hotels.com pretending they did not speak English! I could go on but they are not worth the time or effort.........

Stayed here for 4 nights whilst exploring Kyoto. The location is quiet good as is walking distance to the main streets of Kyoto - however it is a decent idea walk to the restaurant area. It is also very close to the train line which will easily take you to Arashiyama, a must see while in Kyoto. The hotel is...

The location is conveniently situated right on the main street, not far from train stations and malls. Staff are well trained. The room is quite sizable, based on Japanese standard. It's well maintained, fully equipped. The bathroom is proportionately designed. Quality toiletries provided. Wifi excellent.

Left the booking a little late to arrange, so was not the first preference, but rather more so due to affordability and vacancy. Previous Kyoto trip, accommodation was a short walk from Kyoto Station, but this - as with many others - were fully booked for what seemed like peak year end/Christmas tourism. But (last minute) pricing was still acceptable....

Small cozy place, staff was friendly and room was clean and practical. This isn't a place you'll want to hang out in (even though we did for some nights), we had a single room so it was tight but nothing unbearable. The rooms were cleaned everyday, it wasn't noisy so sleeping wasn't a problem. The hotel has laundry which was...

Price wasn't too bad compared to others in the area. Rooms were small but clean and fairly comfortable. The 1.5 double beds are small for two people but manageable. Good location close to subway and other public transportation spots. If you're easy going and don't need much space, this was a good place to go and rest your head after...

I am living in South Korea for work for 6 months and decided to come to Japan for a quick 3 days. I came Sunday through Tuesday in order to get a cheaper price on the room, which was worth it in my opinion. The bed was one of the better beds I've slept on in Asia (I've been traveling...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
