firstly we are very fussy about our accommodation and normally stay in 5 star accommodation, and although we had stayed in ryokans before we were a little pessimistic about this stay , however all in vain as it was truly wonderful and we extended by several days on arrival. The hospitality is overwhelming, nothing is too much trouble, rooms are...

Such a quiet and nice ryokan nestled in the mountainside. We only stayed for one night but wish we could have stayed longer! The food was amazing, we had dinner and breakfast both of which were multiple courses of interesting and delicious things - the presentation of the food was absolutely beautiful! We also booked a private onsen which I...

We are a family of 4 (including 2 children) and we spent one night in this ryokan as we wanted to see Arashiyama. The ryokan is actually in Takao, so not technically in Kyoto. Having spent another 2 nights in another ryokan, we found this one more upmarket. The service was impeccable. We were greeted at the door and taken...

My wife and I (30 years old) stayed in the beautiful ryokan located just on the outskirts of Kyoto for one night. It was the highlight of our two week trip in Japan. The service was the best we had ever experienced. The setting was out in the forest and it was beautiful. One of the best parts was the...

Wow - superb. It's such an amazing and enjoyable stay for my first 2 nights in Kyoto on 15 Nov 2016. You received the warm welcome from the team as soon as you got off the bus even though I arrived that so early. We visited the temple nearby then checked in, and had the hot spring in the private...

Traditional style onsen ryokan at affordable price! Also a great place to enjoy fall leafs. Staff were professional and hospitable, dinner and breakfast were both Kyoto style and very delicious. The onsen was not real hot spring as Takao area doesn't have hot spring source, but still very relaxing. Rooms and facilities were not new, but very well-maintained, the tatami...

Momijiya (Kyoto) - a secluded ryokan nestled in the Kyoto mountains right off of a river. My wife and I alighted from the local bus which departed from the Kyoto train terminal. We were greeted on arrival by the ryokan's managing lady, with very attentive staff who led us into their beautiful establishment. The room we stayed in was everything...

We stayed in their main building for a night in early nov. Email them in 1 month earlier on their shuttle bus service (1510, 1610 & 1710 at JR Hanazono Station) to confirm our seats. Only 1610 was available. We arrived the station on time, and the shuttle bus arrived at 1619 and reached Momijiya Main Building Takao Sanso at...

If you are looking for a nice and quiet Ryokan/hotel the Momijiya Honkan is the place. While it is a challenge to figure the correct bus to the ryokan we eventually figured it out (hint: take the #8 or the JR blue line bus toward Takao) From the very moment we stepped off the bus we were greeted by a...

Which is exactly what we did and allowed to be done to us. We arrived in the afternoon and by the time we settled in we only had a couple of hours before we were rushed off to dinner by the river. The set dinner with the Maiko interaction was a highlight but again we felt rushed as if there...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
