This is an exceptional Ryokan located near Heian Temple. You are within walking distance to majorities of the recommended temples. If you aren't feeling like walking , bus stops is few steps away, so is the train station. The facilities are great. You have the traditional Ryokan setting with most western hotel amenitites (e.g. Hair dryer , fridges, tea/coffee set...

We stayed for 2 nights at the Sawaya Honten. The location is pretty good. We were able to walk to the Kamo River to have dinner in the Pontocho area. Lots of people out enjoying the river area. Although the rooms have baths, we enjoyed the communal bath both nights. The only downside was the bedding. The futons were very...

We had the pleasure to stay in this delightful Ryokan for two nights. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable in every way. The breakfast was devine: so beautifully presented, delicious and nutritious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this Ryokan for a real Kyoto cultural experience.

I'm so happy I couldn't find a room in a hotel, because this ryokan was so much better! Everything is almost new but still absolutely traditional. Beautiful room, lots of space, small but comfy indoor onsen. Owner is very helpful and speaks good English if needed. Many cafes, small japanese restaurants and izakayas nearby. You can even travel with a...

Excellent service at this clean, modern, and friendly Ryokan. We really enjoyed our stay here. A few improvements could really improve this Ryokan: 1) black out blinds. The sun wakes you up as the paper blinds aren't great for blocking sunlight 2) better toilet paper. 1 ply just doesn't cut it for this kind of stay 3) need way better...

It was my first time visiting Kyoto and I made the right choice with this traditional ryokan. It's in a nice quiet area and very close to trains, only two stops from Gion-Shijo. The place is beautiful, very clean and my room was very big and perfectly kept. The owners are exquisite people, very kind and attentive. Would definitely visit...

We stayed for 2 nights. It is a very well run hotel. The rooms are very comfortable and the in room shower was terrific. ( not all rooms have private baths so if this is important be sure to book a room with one. You do sleep on a tatami mat. I asked if they could double it for me...

Great location to grab buses to get to the many sites of Kyoto, very convenient! Room was very clean and spacious, and staff was courteous. We also appreciated staying in a ryokan with an in-room western bathroom option after staying in a "true" ryokan that lacked certain luxuries.

This Ryokan is located in a convenient location to a lot of Kyoto sightseeing. The staff are wonderful, always willing to offer suggestions and help with just about anything and speak very good English. The buses in Kyoto are very convenient and we made the most of the all day 500 yen passes which are also conveniently sold at the...

Tidy Ryokan, very well located right next to a subway station and a few blocks away form the imperial palace and the river. The rooms are quite large and everything inside (including the bathroom) is extremely clean. It has public bathrooms with a hot tub, which is nice and clean.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
